The first of the 2017 Intel Mini Scientist Regional Finals was hosted at Intel in Shannon.
Pictured at Intel in Shannon was Intel Shannon General Manager Brian Aherne with Kadi Farrell, Ayesha Rahman and Grace McGloin from Barefield National School, Ennis, Co. Clare.
Over 80 students from 24 different schools in Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Galway took part with 5 projects being selected to go forward to the National Grand Final taking place in February 2018. The 5 winning schools were presented with their prizes by Intel Shannon General Manager Brian Aherne.

Vedere attraverso la pioggia
Le nostre auto sono già dotate di un'ampia gamma di tecnologie integrate ma Intel, in collaborazione con la Carnegie Mellon University, ha avviato lo sviluppo di fari intelligenti che spingono alcune funzionalità e la sicurezza a nuovi livelli.
Guidare sotto la pioggia o la neve è stancante e stressante, ma entro la fine del decennio potrebbe essere possibile guidare un'auto che rende invisibile la pioggia. La tecnologia “Seeing Through Rain” (vedere attraverso la pioggia) è un sistema più simile a un proiettore, che ai tradizionali fari a singola lampadina disponibili nelle attuali auto. Il sistema incorpora una videocamera digitale che rileva le gocce di pioggia mentre cadono e inserisce tali dati nel sistema dell'auto.
Il sistema è quindi in grado di calcolare dove cadrà la prossima goccia, e spegne e accende le singole lampadine per evitare di illuminarla, con il risultato che il conducente vede molte meno gocce. Si tratta di un sistema più sicuro e intelligente, potenzialmente disponibile nelle nuove auto entro la fine del decennio.

Guardare video dovrebbe essere molto più facile, almeno in teoria, ma nella pratica non é sempre cosí per i tanti cavi da gestire e una conseguente grande perdita di tempo. Nel futuro la soluzione consiste nell'utilizzare la virtualizzazione.
DaaS trasforma ogni schermo in una serie di pixel a cui è possibile inviare un'immagine da qualsiasi dispositivo. In questo modo, un'immagine su un tablet potrebbe essere inviata tramite la rete a diversi schermi contemporaneamente, consentendo ad esempio a una squadra di collaborare a un progetto ovunque si trovino i suoi membri. Oppure potrebbe essere possibile trasformare diversi schermi separati in un unico schermo gigante tramite DaaS. In alternativa, si potrebbero inviare le immagini di diversi dispositivi a un unico monitor: immaginiamo tutti i nipoti che inviano contenuti dai loro tablet o Ultrabook™ allo schermo dei nonni a cento chilometri di distanza per coinvolgere tutta la famiglia. L'obiettivo è creare uno standard aperto per DaaS in modo che i dispositivi di tutte le piattaforme possano far parte di tale esperienza entro i prossimi 5 o 10 anni.
