Prickly pears on the side of the hill at their best but no one to pick them.
Sadly, the house in the background is left to decay and will eventually collapse.
Traditional mud brick construction is a cheap and easy form of making all kinds of shelters, either for humans, animals or storage. Mud brick has many positive qualities, it is load bearing and has good insulation properties. It is also fire resistant and forgiving, meaning that if you make a mistake you can correct it by remaking it. Mud brick construction also has the cleanest ecological footprint as it returns to the earth from where it came. The materials used to make mud bricks are available all over Cyprus. This includes clay soil, chopped straw and water. It is most economical to use readily available materials rather than transport soil in from distant areas. All that is needed is water and man power to mix it and the sun to dry it. The external coat of render protects the mud bricks from the rain.
However, this perfect form of construction has been replaced in recent times with imported methods which consist of cement and hollow clay bricks offering little insulation and add significantly to the cost of house bulding.

Another 'previously unpublished' shot taken in October 2017. With sharply increasing energy bills as we head into winter I think we will be needing some extra layers of insulation indoors too. Stay safe my Flickr friends - enjoy!
Norman Hudson holds a roll of this cool plastic mesh designed to back up batt fiberglass insulation. The worker on top of the scaffold is stripping off squares of 40-year-old stucco, while the man on the ground is loading into a truck.
Any colorful building material is a plus in my book, even though it will be covered over.

This shot marks the point of 7000 photos added to my street photography album 'On the Street'. Quite the milestone though, thanks to the past couple of years, there are just a few re-edits in the mix too. Thank you all for your awesome support. Enjoy!
The weather is changing quickly, so today I made a sugar candy for the girls. It is basically fondant and really messy to work with. The white residue by the lower entrance is oxalic acid from pest treatments the last month. The only thing missing is the white top outer cover which goes over the insulation.
NAHLIN seen at Sandon Dock Liverpool after whilst up for sale following her repatriation from Romania.
At the time the yacht brokers were very unhappy about photographs being taken of the vessel and myself and other enthusiasts were chased away despite holding Photographic Passes issued by the dock company.
Fortunately on August 08, 2003 members of the Merseyside Branch of the World Ship Society were taken on a cruise around Liverpool Docks on board the pollution control vessel POLGARTH from which this photograph was taken and with water between us and the resident security!

NAHLIN is one of the last three large steam yachts to be constructed in the UK. Built for Lady Yule [Annie Henrietta] a jute millionairess and widow the NAHLIN carried a crew of 58. Her first appearance was at Cowes Week, August 1930. She had been designed by G.L. Watson & Company and built by John Brown & Company of Glasgow.
The vessel was originally furnished with six en-suite staterooms for guests, ladies sitting room with sea views on three sides and a library.
In 1936 NAHLIN was chartered by the "Duke of Lancaster" who was King Edward VIII and used by him in the company of Mrs. Wallace Simpson during their love affair.
NAHLIN was purchased by the Romanian government in 1937 for the sum of £120,000. The yacht was renamed LUCEAFARUL [The Evening Star] by King Carol who also had the vessel’s gymnasium replaced by a stateroom.
Following King Carol's abdication, she remained the property of the Romanian Government and survived the years of Communist rule serving as a passenger ship and latterly as a restaurant on the River Danube. The ship was renamed LIBERTATEA [Freedom] in 1948.
In the latter part of 1999, the yacht was shipped to the UK aboard the Dockwise Heavy Lift Ship SWIFT.
When LIBERTATEA arrived in the UK she was laid up at DML's Devonport Dockyard and remained there until the end of April 2000. She was brought to Liverpool and arrived on May 3, 2003, being berthed at the then Cammell Laird owned Clarence Dry Docks adjacent to Stanley Dock where she was expected to undergo the initial phase of what was expected to be a $35million dollar restoration.
In October 2000 G.L. Watson & Company the yacht's original designers were appointed as special consultants to the restoration being supervised by Yachtworks Ltd.
LIBERTATEA was removed from the Clarence Dry Docks around July 23, 2001, to a berth in Sandon Dock. Since her arrival G.L. Watson's sister company, Yachtworks, have removed over 450 tones of asbestos insulation, heavy fuel oil and debris and the interior surveyed. The ship was given her original name NAHLIN and port of registry – Glasgow whilst at Liverpool.
On July 27, 2005 NAHLIN was loaded aboard the heavy lift ship CONDOCK V at Liverpool and taken to Rendsburg it was reported she had be bought by German interests.
It later transpired the purchaser was businessman Anthony Bamford of JCB digger fame. Her refit was continued in Germany.
As refitted, she has berths for 14 passengers and up to 47 crew. She was then taken to Hamburg, where Blohm+Voss replaced her steam turbines with a new diesel-electric powertrain. MTU Friedrichshafen supplied a pair of 16-cylinder diesel engines, each of which is rated at 2,502 bhp (1,866 kW). They drive a pair of electric generators, which in turn drive a pair of electric motors, one powering each propeller. Each electric motor is rated at 2,000 kW (2,700 hp).
During restoration, the ship’s original mahogany-hulled 6.4 m (21 ft) ship-to-shore tender, believed lost for 60 years, was found in Scotland, having been fully restored by owner Willie McCullough. It has now been reunited with the yacht.
In 2006 Inventor and entrepreneur Sir James and Lady Dyson acquired the yacht from Anthony Bamford.
In 2010 NAHLIN returned to service.

Came across this guy and another smaller bull during our first snowfall of the season a couple weeks ago. They were both hunkered down in the trees, trying to avoid the winds. I was amazed at how good their insulation is, as you can see from the snow gathered on his beautiful coat.
Woke up to 10 inches of snow overnight, and it's still coming down. Have a great Thursday!
On Explore - January 19, 2023 - Thanks to all my Flickr friends!
It was a -3 degree cold morning. In the park, Robin always appears suddenly, sometimes on the ground, sometimes on the walls and tree branches, standing and showing himself.
That's why it's hard not to press the shutter button when I see my favourite only 16 - 22g little bird.
I hope you enjoy the photographs as much as I enjoyed taking them.
Britain’s favourite bird 'European Robin' redbreast - Yes, the robin is, without doubt, one of our favourite garden birds. Robins are good at coping with cold and snow, but far northern Europe can still be a bit too much in winter. A robin's lifespan is just 13 months on average due to high mortality among robins in their first year. Once they've passed that barrier, they stand a much better chance of surviving for quite a while the record currently stands at 13-19 years. Robins are very territorial birds and will viciously attack other robins that on their patch. A dispute starts with males singing at each other, trying to get a higher perch in order to show off their breast most effectively. This usually ends the challenge, with one individual deferring to the other.
Why does a robin puff up?
On cool spring mornings and chilly days, robins puff out their feathers – called rousing – to stay warm. It fluffs air into the bird's down feathers, giving some insulation to help the robin maintain its body temperature.
Do robins puff themselves up?
Male robins will always attack any intruder into their space, occasionally – though fortunately not often – fighting to the death. Both sexes of robins have red breasts and both puff out their chests as a sign of aggression.
Here are some fun facts about Robins, the nations favourite garden bird.
Robins are very territorial and you'll usually only see 2 together when they're mating.
In fact, they're so territorial that they often fight to the death defending their area.
They are very loyal to their food sources. The Robin you see in your garden is most likely the same one each time.
Young Robins do not have red breasts. They are brown and lightly speckled, only growing their red feathers after their first moult.
Its nearly impossible to tell apart the male and female Robin by sight.
They are ground feeding, insectivorous birds; mostly feeding on worms and insects found in freshly turned soil (as well as fruit).
Females often eat the shells of their hatched young for an extra boost of calcium.
Robins (both male and female) have such driven parental instincts that they have been found to feed the chicks of other species.

kitten rescue today.
5 of them were under our house in between the floorboards and the insulation! we were able to rescue them and are now in the process of finding their momma.
Wouldn't it be nice to insulate ourselves from the cold by puffing out like this sweet Goldfinch, then when someone walks by, we just suck it all back in :)

View of damaged high-percentage asbestos millboard insulation in basement of residential structure, formerly used as heat shielding on wooden support member.
Often mistakenly thought of as regular cardboard or "transite" paneling, asbestos millboard is a distinct type of insulation, usually distinguished more notably by its density and friability, as compared to corrugated paper or cement-based materials.
Material characterization aside, this damaged asbestos material will be removed by properly trained and licensed asbestos abatement contractor personnel.
With the insulation layers in place its time to start thinking about puting a layer or two of paint on the outside to protect from the rain, most prevailent in august here.

Ski Dubai is claimed to be one of the largest indoor ski resorts in the world, with 22,500-square metres of indoor ski area. It is a part of the Mall of the Emirates, which is one of the largest malls in the world.
An extremely efficient insulation system is the key to maintain the temperature of -1 degrees Celsius during the day and -6 degrees during the night when the snow is produced.
Was suprised how this shot came out as it didn't look that great in the camera but by adding a layer that was tonemapped at about 40% opacity it really brought these clouds out.
Long exposure of 20 seconds at F11 iso 250 as didn't want to lengthen to increase cloud movement. Looks like at dusk but was mid morning but got really dark.
Thanks for the suggestions for preventing light leak on the Lee Big Stopper as have a Hi-Tech holder that isn't tight enough. In the end I bought a 99p roll of black insulation tape that does the job nicely and isn't too sticky.

This image is of pussywillow catkins, photographed while hiking in Alberta's Yamnuska Swamp.
It is now winter, and these flowers are harbingers of spring! Sorry about that. The devil made me do it.
At the tail end of winter, fuzzy nubs (catkins) start to appear along the branches of pussy willows. These soft silver tufts—as well as the plant itself—are named for their resemblance to tiny cats’ paws, and they feel so much like fur that young children often wonder if they are animals instead of plants. What are those little nubs? Are they seeds? Fruits? And why are they fuzzy?
They're actually flowers just before they fully bloom. The soft coating of hairs acts as insulation to protect these early bloomers from cold temperatures.
The species most commonly called pussy willow, Salix discolor, is a small, shrubby species of willow that can be found dotting wetlands and moist woods throughout much of North America. Most other willows make similar flowers, and since they’re among the very first to bloom, they’re especially delightful—they signal the last throes of winter and the brink of spring.
