17th-century medical instruments, given as presentation set. The main difference with 21st-century medicine is that the tools are sterilized now (plus there's way more drug treatments).

Harry Partch was an American composer, music theorist, and creator of musical instruments. He was also one of the first 20th-century composers in the West to work systematically with microtonal scales. He built custom-made instruments in these tunings on which to play his compositions, and described his theory and practice in his book "Genesis of a Music".
Back in the fall of 2013, I had the opportunity to visit the Partch Studio at Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ to take some photos of these fascinating instruments.
Waiting on some odd-value resistors needed for this circuit, but here's the deal. A pair of Texas Instruments OP07CP op-amps driving a Texas Instruments RC4558P. Of course, the old Sharp PC419 vactrol is no longer in production, so this build has a Fairchild H11F1.
The DIP-8 LM308s I used in my first build had a harsh high-frequency thing going on that may have been high-frequency oscillation. I have since speculated that they might have been Chinese counterfeits and the oscillation was characteristic of their overall not-goodness. That sound went away when I used vintage TO-99 LM308 op-amps in the same build, so I started using those for everything Rat-centric. If the Texas Instruments OP07CP op-amps actually turn out to be a good replacement for the LM308, it will be nice having current-production ICs to source. Because Texas Instruments tends to have pretty decent quality control, in my experience.
Will this be a good Expandora? Dunno. I'm guessing that it's probably going to sound pretty much exactly like LM308s driving a JRC4558, but I could be wrong. That's why we build prototypes.

An exhibit of strange instruments that never quite caught on at the Sheldon Art Gallery in St. Louis, MO.
Pictures from my third instrument training flight. My instrument instructor Brian and I practice DME arcs and holding patterns over the Berryville Practice Area west of Leesburg, VA while Erin took these photos from the backseat of our DA-40 aircraft, N392MA. Also at work was the Promote Systems GPS receiver for the Nikon D90 (More info here: http://lem.cc/7 )
