PS: I think I have a explanation for the reservation expressed in my "Hmmm" comment in the text inset at top-left of the photo. The dense pubescence which the 3 arrows point to there is on the inflorescence branches...which often have a different vestiture than the "stem", which technically is the portion of the stalk of the plant below the inflorescence(s).

THE JEEP WE RENTED FOR TOMORROW'S DAWN PATROL IN THE MTS BACK ON THE HORIZON. OUR SPRINTER I CONSIDER VERY BIG, A PICK UP LENGTH BUT IT FITS ANY PARKING SPOT, GOES OFF ROAD. AND GETS 24 MILES A GALLON. THE GOLD TRAILER BESIDE US PARKS ONLY IN RV PARKS, GETS BLOWN OVER IN STORMS, AND IS 11 MILES/GAL WHEN IT'S FLAT. THE WHITE BLOAT ON RIGHT MOVES 6 MI PER GAL. supposed to assemble. The AISA cannot disown pc·litical responsibility for the unfortunate incident of the breaking of the glass panes of the SL building's door. Resorting to such IJmpenism which used to be practised only by the ABVP in our campus would only help the right-wing forces who feel suffocated ir the democratic traditions of our campus. Most condemnably, the AISA has sought to make use of the hostel crisis as a means to curtail the exercise of the students' democratic right to respond to issues tuden1s to vote in favour of the Convenors' Reports in exchange for letting them stay .

demands. It is instructive in this reluctant to intensify struggles when the administration refuses point blank to heed to students' .

juncture to look back at the history of the JNUSU. .

The JNUSU had played a pioneering role in the formJiation of a unique admission policy in the early 1970s itself, which provided deprivation points to students from deprived socio-economic t:-ackgrounds and to those hailing from backward regions in the entrance .

examination. From then onwards, the JNUSU {which was led for the most number of years by SFI) has stood as a powerful .

instrument of struggle in the hands of the JNU sl\...dents, from !earling active resistance against brutal repression during the .

Emergency to the struggle in the campus agair.st the communal··fascist forces which were gaining strength in the country during the second half of the 1990s and the early 2000s. Attempts to saffronise education, reflected in moves like the proposal to introduce .

courses such as "Human consciousness", were defeated by the strength of the movement led by the SFI-Ied Union in 2001-02. .

Ensuring a safe and enabling environment for students in the campus has always been a priority for the JNU students' movement. .

It was after a massive struggle led by the SFI-Ied union in 1999 that the construction of new hostels from Tapti to .

Chandrabhaga began. During this struggle, following a 14-day hunger strike, 63 students were arrested and 14 students including 3 office-bearers of the JNUSU were illegally detained in Tillar jail for three days. All sections of the JNU community had risen in unison against the high-handedness of the administration, which had to back down and accept the demands of t11e students..

.

The last time when the MCM scholarship ~!"nount was increased as a result of an agitation was in 2006 -·the MCM agitation .

of that year was envisaged and led by the JNUSU office-bearers from SFI. Following the agitation, the administration was forced to .

enhance the MCM scholarship amount for BA and MA 3tudents from Rs. 600 to Rs. 1500. .

The struggle for gender justice got a tremendous boost in the campus with the formation of the GSCASH, which was the result of a .

prolonged agitation led by the SFI-Ied Union. On t1e eve of the International Women's Day in 19g7 on behalf of the JNUSU, a state level convention {inaugurated by Capt. Lakshmi ~:eh~al) was held, where the Union presented a students' draft for a Committee Against Sexual Harassment. After discussions and agitations that lasted for many months, the GSCASH was set up, two years later, on March 8, 1999. .

At a time when students are faced with the biggest hostel crisis in the recent decades, and when gender justice ls facing attacks from those who are supposed to defend it, it is important that we reclaim the fighting traditions of the students movement in our campus. s public meeting in Godavari mess..

Kind of a misnomer actually. Born in Edinburgh in 1789, William Burn was to become one of the most prolific and sought after country house architects of the nineteenth century.

Burn’s output, predominantly domestic, was aesthetically diverse, choosing to lead taste and pioneering the revival of several architectural styles. His country house commissions number in excess of 300 and are located throughout Scotland, England and Ireland.

Through an understanding of how his clients lived and ordered their lives, Burn was able to arrange their living spaces with unparalleled precision, and when combined with a compositional mastery the result was some of the most instructive country houses of the nineteenth century.

6/4/13. In the afternoon of the first day of our four-day Wilderness Ranger Academy we ran scenarios. At this one, a couple did not have their permit--in an area with a quota--and we had to explain why permits and quotas are a good thing. At another station a couple was poking a snake with a stick; at another, they were collecting pinecones for their grandmother's craft projects; at another, we encountered a drunken belligerent couple (whom I sweet-talked to the extent that they broke character and explained that I was so nice they were having trouble staying belligerent). It was fun AND instructive.

Robert W. Smeltzer Sr., a Pennsylvania native, led a multifaceted life. He served in the U.S. Navy, worked as an electrical engineer and fulfilled the duties of husband and father. Later in life, he embarked on a new journey, embracing the role of a devoted avian sculptor.

In 1966, Smeltzer began his artistic hobby after discovering John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America." Armed with Audubon's famous bird illustrations, Smeltzer spent over two decades creating 242 bird carvings, along with a handful of snakes. Each sculpture reproduced the colors and markings of their real-life counterparts. Smeltzer crafted each piece using an array of woods, including mahogany, cypress, cedar and redwood. Notably, he never purchased any wood for his creations - the materials were either gifted to him by friends or sourced through scavenging.

These creatures, rendered in an endearingly crude and expressive style, signal Smeltzer's status as an outsider artist.

His unorthodox approach, unburdened by formal training, yielded art that is both imaginative and deeply personal. In his own words, "I take scraps and leftovers and make birds out of them." This resourcefulness and ingenuity underscore the essence of Smeltzer's art. His unshackled creativity, coupled with his lack of a formal art education, impart a slightly primitive appearance to his carvings. As Smeltzer once expressed, "The birds are not meant to be pretty but instructive."

In 1993, as his failing eyesight ended his artistic endeavors, Smeltzer gifted his complete collection of carved birds to the Appleton Museum of Art. Alongside these sculptures, he added the tools that shaped them and his well-worn copy of "Birds of America," marked with handwritten margin notes that attest to the depth of his study.

This is a wonderful structure made from native stones with native labour, who were the men of long ago who created such lovley bridges? they surely deserve some recognition, no other material could so handsomely complement the surroundings, the supports seem almost to grow out of the beck.

I count this a work of art, and for comparison it's instructive to look at Andy Galsworthy's stone "art work" the sheepfold at Tilberthwaite, I know which one I prefer.

Stop Vote-Bank Politics of Appeasement! .

.

Friends, 17.04.2007 .

When the Sachar Report about the status of Muslims in India came out our enlightened and .

pseudo-secular friends in the campus be they the communists or the ultra radicals like SFI and AISA .

who till now used to cry horse about Gujarat (conveniently forgetting their own Nandigrams, .

Dantewada,.... and the hundreds of innocent lives which has been lost in the mindless .

violence by these ultras and the naxals) failed to convey to the campus and the student .

community as a whole (their intentional memory lapses and failures are far to many) that the same .

Sachar Report had mentioned that from an overall Muslim empowerment standpoint Dravidian ruled .

.

Tamil Nadu and BJP Ruled Gujarat are at the top of the deck while the communist ruled West Bengal is .

at the bottom. There in lies the key message from the Sachar Report. For decades now since .

Independence we have witnessed Muslim Vote Bank Politics practiced by the Congress and the other .

regional outfits including the communists while paying lip service to secularism and claiming cover .

under protecting Minority Interests. So when the CPI-M and the Congress seek to make the case that .

the Sachar Report nails the BJP lie one cannot but wonder what make believe parallel universe the .

Congress and the Communists dwell in. .

If anything the Sachar findings far from nailing any lie, make it loud and clear that Muslim Vote .

Bank Politics have been all about Minority Appeasement and not about Minority Empowerment. They .

were never really about caring for the ordinary Muslim on the road but were always about how the .

Congress and the Communists could trade power, entitlements and fear in exchange for the Muslim .

Vote Bank. Be it the Shah Bano Case, be it the kow-towing to fatwas and Ulema, be it the indulgence .

of the Shahi Imam on key political issues, and be it Haj Subsidy or Wakf Board freebies. .

The fact is that despite the high-decibel campaign launched by the anti-nationals about the .

Sachar Report, there is no sign of any systemic discrimination against the Muslims when it comes to .

jobs; the problem lies in the enrolment levels of Musrims in schools. The 1999-2000 NSS data show, .

for instance, that while Muslims comprised 12.2 per cent of the country's population, their share in .

those who had passed school wa~ just 7.2 per cent. The rest then follows from this number-so; the .

Muslims formed just 6.5 per cent of the proportion of those enrolled in college, though they still .

managed to get 9. 7 per cent of the total number of ''professional, technical and managerial" jobs in the .

country. .

As far as poverty among Muslims is concerned the all India average for the means per capita .

expenditure MPCE (Sachar report) was Rs 712. The figures for Muslims, OBC's and SC/ST's were 636, .

645 and 520 respectively. The MPCE for Muslims is only Rs 76 off the national average amounting to a .

negligible difference of Rs 2.50 per day; not something earth shattering as the communist, congress, .

naxals have been making it out to be. Further by this criterion, Muslims are better off than SC/ ST's .

(25°/o of Hindus) and almost on par with OBC's ( 40°/o of Hindus): certainly not at the bottom of the .

heap. .

The political debate around the Sachar Report is likely to revolve around the question of .

reservations or affirmative actions for Muslims. The battle lines are very clearly drawn. Like the OBC .

reservation debate it looks like this debate too will very quickly degenerate into one about creating a .

culture of entitlement rather than one of empowerment and independence. Rather than focus on .

access to educational opportunities and subsequent empowerment it now looks certain that the .

Congress and its Communist allies will resort to myopic shortcuts of doling out Government jobs to .

Muslims. · .

Unless the government's policy focus is firn1ly on de-ghetolzation and workforce mobility any initiatives targeting religious Minorities will be mere lip service and will lead to further institutionalization of vote bank politics which we have seen fuels radicalization and shelters terrorism. When one looks at an Azim Premji heading WIPRO, an Abdul Kalam heading India, an Azharuddin heading the Indian Cricket Team, an Aamir Khan or Shahrukh Khan captivating minds and hearts, one sees a successful Indian professional not a Muslim. One has to only travel to Hyderabad to see how scores of Muslim I.T. professionals have done well for themselves in a Microsoft or an Infosys rendering religious identity irrelevant. .

The Nation would do well to pay attention to an instructive case study on how Muslim Vote Bank Politics can hurt the nation. Look at what the illegal immigration from Bangladesh into Assam and West Bengal is doing to our democracy. By cultivating the migrants Muslims from Bangladesh as a captive vote bank and by refusing to act tough on the illegality of their migration, the Congress in Assam sowed the seeds for perennial strife in that state. Online journals are normally run by an individual or a little gathering to introduce data in a conversational style. In any case, presently there are huge loads of corporate web journals that produce a great deal of instructive and thought-administration style content.

Fig. 11.1 in:

Lankenau, D.-H. 2011. Two RNA Worlds: Toward the Origin of Replication, Genes, Recombination and Repair, p. 225-286. In R. Egel, D.-H. Lankenau, and A. Y. Mulkidjanian (ed.), Origins of Life: The Primal Self-Organization. Springer Verlag, Heidelberg.

Figure legend:

Fig. 11.1 The origin of life and the theory of life escorted by the deductive method – toward a multidisciplinary unifying synthesis. (a) Darwinian evolution and the origin of life conceptionalized by following the Popperian deductive cycle (Waechtershaeuser 1997). It assumes that science moves from the current reality to the past particulars (top to bottom) and back to the general (same track bottom to top) – a circling, reductionistic, holistic process without end. The path backward in time is chosen by cladistic means following the Darwinian tree of life. As described in the text, first, Belozersky, Crick, Orgel, Woese, Britten & Davidson and Gilbert concluded that RNA was a primordial molecule of an RNA world. LUCAS was the Last Universal Common Ancestral State of all organisms but not a real individual entity as horizontal material, i.e., gene exchange, was common. LUCAS defines the ancient key molecules and metabolic processes present ubiquitously in contemporary life. Following these key processes from root level back-up the tree promises insight into the mechanisms of evolution and the historic and coincidental realities. Wedges (b, c, d) show non-Life Science approaches toward a theory of the origin of life. They can be seen as Popperian deductive mini-cycles that have the potential to fuse with any other deductive cycle. Stanley Miller’s discharge experiments (c) represent the initial root of this bottom-up approach. Here, scientists look at chemical reactions that formed primeval, biologically relevant molecules. The goal is to analyze the variables leading to the initial Darwinian ancestor (IDA). The relevance of such reactions for the origin of life on the protoearth

is then tested experimentally in the laboratory. Geologic and interstellar findings contribute further data of relevance. Between panel (a) on the one hand, and wedges (b, c, d) on the other hand resides the “golden spike”: The “golden spike” is a paraphrase used by Wills and Bada to describe the bottom-up versus the top-down approach (for explanations see footnote 3). The open pentagon at the center represents the hub of interest for all parties. Benner recently noted that any definition of life must incorporate a “theory of life” (Benner et al. 2011). Vice versa, any theory of life must address the origin of life. A working-definition (Lankenau 2006), influenced by all wedges shown, that is compatible with Benner’s requirements is taken as a basis. This biologist’s, anthropic definition (for those who prefer a different) should at least help

initially to focus efforts at understanding: To comprehend the beginnings of life requires that we explain the origin of replication as well as of metabolism synergistically (Maynard Smith and Szathmary 1997). The genetic aspect of the modern definition of life was first proposed by Muller in 1966: “It is to define as alive any entities that have the properties of multiplication, variation and heredity” (Muller 1966). While metabolism supplies the monomers from which the replicators (i.e. genes) are made, replicators alter the kind of chemical reactions occurring in metabolism. Only then can natural selection, acting on replicators, power the evolution of metabolism. The central idea incorporates the need of “instructive genetic information” that can replicate complements. Panel A further depicts the complex and simple three domains of life as discovered by studies on 16S rRNA (Woese and Fox 1977; Woese et al. 1990); Darwin’s tree of life is rooted in the Last Universal Common ancestor (LUCA) that initially existed not as an entity but as the Last Universal Common Ancestral State (LUCAS) (Koonin 2009). Figure in part based on (Benner et al. 2011). The reticulated tree is based in part on (Doolittle 1999).

Notice:

In coalescence theory of population genetics the term "Most Recent Common Ancestor" = MRC is often used, e.g. by Richard Dawkins.

While waiting to go into the chapel our tour was asked to look at some educational posters of the ceiling paintings.

Many of the 83 county seat cities around Michigan have similar prints to this one of Kent County's capital, Grand Rapids. This aerial view was all the more novel to people of the time since only the hot air balloons during the U.S. Civil War used for observing the enemy lines and behind the lines would have been known. And so to see one's own city or to browse the aerial view of towns never visited in person must have been a visual thrill.

Judging from scale, perhaps the artist (or photographer whose image served the color print artist) was at 400 feet, today's legal limit for most camera drones used recreationally. Making a matching altitude and composition in 2023 for overlaying the images would be instructive: showing where the 1868 streets, bridges and specific buildings persist into the present.
