Comparison WODU & MADU

Although not the greatest shots they are instructive

Side View on Water

This view (View 2) perhaps, of the series, best makes apparent these 2 differing features between these female duck

1. WODU has a more substantial crest feature ,noticeably thicker at the back of head

2. MADU has a noticible striping pattern of feathering of lower cheeks

Other features noted below::

Similar white around eyes however MADU has less

,WODU head has feathers that may show iridescence(overall substantially more apparently)

MADU has larger 'spots' on side

This exercise is not meant to be an exhaustive/absolute ....and some review of photos online seem to show that "our" MADU female is still transitioning her plumage somewhat

Keep in mind :: Each individual duck species varies within stages of season moulting, and here we have different individual WODU females & only one WODU individual.

Having said all that -- it is still a beneficial exercise

:)

AS one clicks (twice) to enlarge view it would seem to show that the

Orbital Ring (fleshy area around the eye) is grey on this bird

That seems to be supported in a quick review of other pix online As opposed to (when seen well) WODU females have an obvious Orange Orbital Ring

About Food For Monk ----

A monk is allowed to collect, receive and consume food between dawn and midday (taken to be 12 noon). He is not allowed to consume food outside of this time and he is not allowed to store food overnight. Plain water can be taken at any time without having to be offered. Although a monk lives on whatever is offered, vegetarianism is encouraged.

A monk must have all eatables and drinkables, except plain water, formally offered into his hands or placed on something in direct contact with his hands. In the Thai tradition, in order to prevent contact with a woman, he will generally set down a cloth to receive things offered by women. He is not allowed to cure or cook food except in particular circumstances.

In accordance with the discipline, a monk is prohibited from eating fruit or vegetables containing fertile seeds. So, when offering such things, a layperson can either remove the seeds or make the fruit allowable slightly damaging it with a knife. This is done by piercing the fruit and saying at the same time 'Kappiyam bhante' or 'I am making this allowable, Venerable Sir' (the English translation). It is instructive to note that, rather than limiting what can be offered, the Vinaya lays emphasis on the mode of offering. Offering should be done in a respectful manner, making the act of offering a mindful and reflective one, irrespective of what one is giving.

The Puffin Book of Trains? Not quite. There had been a board book before this which featured the colour plates from OS Nock's Scottish Railways, inspirational names still echo today "Dunvegan Castle" and "Wolf of Badenoch"

The Puffin book was more instructive with the cut-away view and review of overseas steam. The ourtside pages are missing, so now it starts here

Bien.

Well. We need to get and ask for Carmina to show you this collegiate, or Church of San Pedro de Cervatos. At the beginning of Cantabria, in the Upper Campoo to

few kilometers from Santander Aguilar direction, exit at Cervatos .. you will not pass to us ... Aside from being a truly enjoyed looking at it in terms of its construction can be very instructive visit. It is one of the greatest exponents of the Roman ... but also of their erotic expression as shown in the picture that this happens. I think this time the artist was exceeded a little moralizing in their expression and defined a bit the same ... No one is bitter sweet ... At that time ... Today I prefer to save the words and everyone sees .... When we go back again ... But I can explain further ... almost all canecillos concern obscene scenes or between animals or between humans ... no ... no one is spared. NO need to go to Asia to see temples with erotic motives ... and needs to be done ... homeland. For the month of June will publish the rest of the story ... that is very interesting .... Pssssssss ... .. and ... thought.

Bien.

Pssssssss ... ... .. et sugerent....

Two of three famous and instructive enlightening readings in China; one is the Three Character Primer, the other two are the Book of Family Names and the Thousand Character Classic.

P1060867k

With Dementia there are days when it is all you can do to stand still and wait for the runaway freight train to run right over you. Today was one of those days. Words did not appear so sentences did not form, balance was difficult and my grip meant dropping everything I held. As the day went on things do improve, enough to go for a short evening walk with Melanie and to feel the lovely Spring sunshine on my face. Camera, hell yeh! Its a sobering thought that this is the direction I will be going in from now on but as they say "Tomorrow is another day"

What is interesting is I have been asked to join a Dementia Research Project that illustrates changes in perception over time as the condition progresses. My mentor wants me to see how my ability and influences change with my photography, other recipients have different aspects of there life such as painting or writing. Could be instructive and insightful moving forwards and empowering in a way.

They are still instructive and in some cases more accurate to typical observation conditions available when sorting through our flocks winter grebes this sized -which are predominantly HOGR

EAGR vs HOGR

Field Mark Cues ^i^

HOGR

adult :: white bill tip & red eyes

consistent thick neck

bill thicker ...less tapered

Crown tends to appear flattened

white neck

cleaner cheek and overall head pattern

ID challenge

EAGR vs HOGR

So the other bird at Back

on Right

Note :

Dark neck

Lopsided appearance to rounded head (it is an EAGR)

Eared Grebe EAGR (Podiceps nigricollis)

also EAGR bill often gives impression of being upturned

AND visible aspects of head and neck very dark

This view would warrant continued obs for a conclusively diagnostic view

the very front bird is a HOGR ..but is difficult because (yeah out of focus)

&

Transitional early winter plumage make for not as clean as "Classic" look

And bad angle to assess shape of crown...but even here the sense is that emphasis of peak of crown is Not at the front or in front of eye

Also when EAGR & HOGR are right beside each other the EAGR appears to be a bit smaller and slighter built

"Simplex Typewriters, $1.00, $2.50, $5.00. The most instructive and useful gift possible to give any child, boy or girl. Come at once to see them demonstrated at E. Schneider & Sons Co., 80 Bergenline Ave., Hudson Hill, N.J."

If you have any interest in the history of typewriters—or vintage ads, photos, and ephemera related to typewriters—then you may want to track down a copy of the recently published book, The Typewriter: A Graphic History of the Beloved Machine (Calgary, Alberta: Uppercase Publishing, 2015), by Janie Vangool (full disclosure: my name appears in a list of supporters at the back of the book just because I preordered a copy).

I don't believe that this Simplex Santa makes an appearance in The Typewriter, but there are photos of a couple of Simplex (Toy) Typewriters (one dated 1910), along with Christmas magazine advertisements, Valentine cards, letterheads, postcards (including a copy of this one, p. 123), manuals, instruction books, certificates, touch typing charts (a colorful example similar to this one appears on pp. 86-87), die cuts, ribbon tins, and other delights.

See also the other side of this die-cut Santa advertisement.

This Hubble Picture of the Week features NGC 2814, an irregular galaxy that lies about 85 million light years from Earth. In this image, which was captured using Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), the galaxy appears to be quite isolated: visually, it looks a little like a loose stroke of bright paint across a dark background. However, looks can be deceiving. NGC 2814 actually has three close (in astronomical terms) galactic neighbours: a side-on spiral galaxy known as NGC 2820; an irregular galaxy named IC 2458; and a face-on non-barred spiral galaxy called NGC 2805. Collectively, the four galaxies make up a galaxy group known as Holmberg 124. In some literature these galaxies are referred to as a group of ‘late-type galaxies’.

The terminology ‘late-type’ refers to spiral and irregular galaxies, whilst ‘early-type’ refers to elliptical galaxies. This rather confusing terminology has led to a common misconception within the astronomy community. It is still quite widely believed that Edwin Hubble inaccurately thought that elliptical galaxies were the evolutionary precursors to spiral and irregular galaxies, and that that is the reason why ellipticals are classed as ‘early-type’ and spirals and irregulars are classed as ‘late-type’. This misconception is due to the Hubble ‘tuning fork’ of galactic classification, which visually shows galaxy types proceeding from elliptical to spiral, in a sequence that could easily be interpreted as a temporal evolution. However, Hubble actually adopted the terms ‘early-type’ and ‘late-type’ from much older astronomical terminology for stellar classifications, and did not mean to state that ellipticals were literally evolutionary precursors to spiral and irregular galaxies. In fact, he explicitly said in his 1927 paper that ‘the nomenclature … [early and late] … refers to position in the sequence, and temporal connotations are made at one’s peril’.

Despite Hubble himself being quite emphatic on this topic, the misunderstanding persists almost a hundred years later, and perhaps provides an instructive example of why it is helpful to classify things with easy-to-interpret terminology from the get-go!

[Image Description: An irregular galaxy, a narrow streak of stars crossed by faint dust lanes. It is surrounded by a bright glow, appearing like a beam of light in the centre of a dark background. A scatter of small, distant galaxies and a single, bright star surround the galaxy.]

The Shot

This image was taken last July on my return from Paris on the Eurostar. The train runs at speeds of up to 186 mph and this picture was taken as it crossed the plains of northern France. The buffet car was perfect for HDR

The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10 mm. Shutter speed was at 1/5 second to keep the effect of speed outside.

One RAW image was opened in Photoshop Camera RAW first to create 2 extra exposures for HDR at 2EV separation. Each image was noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

This picture was enhanced with HDR processing followed by Topaz Adjust and Photoshop to bring in more detail. Processing included bringing in all 3 of the source images at various stages to adjust areas using layer masks.

With the wide range of light from the outside to inside the before and after images on my Blog are quite instructive on the benefits of HDR.

Full details of the processing together with before and after images are on my Blog see Edwin Jones Photography Blog

City night photos are among my favorites. But I seldom get the chance to shoot them. I have two flickr friends who do a lot of them and do them very well which has been instructive.

This photo was taken right by the Adler Planetarium and shows a portion of Navy Pier and some of the downtown.

Since Chicago is not car friendly, it was an adventure getting there, not to mention finding the spot, and required some illegal parking or a 5 mile walk both ways. You can guess which I chose. All in all, a lot of fun.

Thanks in advance for taking your time to view my photos. I have a couple other shots from about the same place I may post later.

Needless to say, the second attempt with Merlot developer did not go as well as the first. I left the film in the developer longer and actually got thinner negs. I am currently analyzing the process and have some things I am going to try. These heavily cropped images were dragged out of the film. They were the only two of even instructive merit.

Is it true to say that one goes into solitude to “get at the root of existence”? It would be better simply to say that in solitude one is at the root. He who is alone, and is conscious of what his solitude means, finds himself simply in the ground of life. He is “in love.” He is in love with all, with everyone, with everything.

-Thomas Merton, Love and Learning, pg 22

/************

He spoke of as a man whose “life is almost totally paradoxical,” and yet-as he himself acknowledged-it was the contradictions, together with the “moments of depression and despair,” that proved to be so instructive, so formative. For Merton, they were “signs of God’s mercy”; for us, they might be seen with the advantage of hindsight as this framework within which he found his prophetic awareness and his prophetic voice.

“Of course it’s not fair. This is a street fight, kid. You’re trying to end the fight as fast as you can, and you’re trying to teach anyone that messes with you a lesson. There’s no cheating here. Our place around the decision makers table is critical for the proper representation of women at work. Many times the light is in us and not in a specific position or workplace. Equality and adequate representation in the work world is possible, rewarding, and is worth fighting for. This book is an invitation to a journey through authentic life stories of 111 women in the Israeli society who have not given up, fell and rose up over and over again. They made their voices heard, progressed and made a personal breakthrough.

The writing in the book is about real life and career. A Women and Career Book -A Leading Influential Presence A fascinating, instructive and transformative journey which transforms business discourse about leadership.

In the Kodak box Brownies like this Nr.2 model F you can easily see the shutter in action. It's wonderfully simple yet effective and cheap.

This is my Kodak Nr. 2 Brownie model F, made in 1931 in the UK. It's a really humble camera, but this F model was all metallic, instead of the cardboard and wood of the former models, like the D that I also have. It takes 120 medium format film. In fact this format was created for this camera by Kodak back in 1900!

Kodak Brownies were the most popular entry level cameras of the early XX Century, when you could buy them for a 1$.

This historic building situated in Market Street, and listed in the National Heritage Register, began life as a much more modest building, serving as the Mechanics' and Miners' Institute, which was opened in 1857. Over the nearly 20 years as the Institute, there were varied accounts as to the level of services offered and patronage from among those it was designed to assist in broadening the mind. Concerned to have a civic centre more worthy of the town, a committee was formed, funds were raised, government assistance secured and with great fanfare and many distinguished guests, the Burra Institute, built on the site of the original Institute, was opened in 1874 with aim of making it:

"... the first in general usefulness by having a well stocked library, an instructive museum, educational classes, popular lectures, and agencies in every direction, whereby the mind might be cultivated and the feelings refined."

Indeed the Burra Institute, or Town Hall as it is now called, was the focal point of Burra's community life for the next century. The Civic Room (formerly known as the Chamber Room) was the home of the Corporation of the Town of Burra from the proclamation in 1876 until its amalgamation with the District Council of Burra Burra in 1969.
