Another image from my Photographing Flowers Workshop with Kathleen Clemons of Santa Fe Workshops.

I didn't place the drop, the rain did. I'm not adverse to "set dressing" if I think it helps an image, it is just in this case, Mother Nature did it. I was surprised I saw it - These flowers are small, about the size of a dime. It was the only flower so anointed. (I only did looking through the viewfinder).
I don't know what this plant is, but I'm told it's a weed of some sort. I wonder why it's a weed, it is very attractive. But, according to humans, "Weed" - n. A plant in the wrong place."
Among the things Ms. Clemons taught was to consciously look at and consider backgrounds, shapes, textures, point of focus, pov, depth of field, colors, composition, lenses, lighting, and perhaps most importantly (for me) "What's the story?"
I tend to photograph by feeling. I tend to leave the technical, the conscious sorting out of an image, to my instincts - like a chef or a cook who long ago stopped having to prepare a wonderful dish from a recipe (but still comes up with tasty, creative twists and turns).
But over the course of the six workshops sessions, I surrendered myself to approaching capturing a flower in a conscious and purposeful way. It isn't aways easy for me to change my approach, "just because" or , "well, let's see."
The reasons why I previously chose a particular flower were instinct, feeling (I liked the way it looked. Nothing wrong with that). But the tech aspects were simple - shutter speed, iso, f-stop, comp. - just the basics. I tended to know, I wanted to capture a "basic" image as I was going to do most of the creative work in post.
Now, I've decided to make a series of conscious choices; made in ways I'm not used to: POV, colors, lighting, backgrounds, DOF, F-Stop, setup, props, composition, color balance, shutter speed, use of tripod, processing. It felt strange at first, but I've quickly adjusted. I also had to admit to myself, it felt to be a lot of work - more technical, less "arty" (aka "creative") and perhaps, suspect.
For most of my life I tended to feel probing the technical would overwhelm my creative side. I don't know why I felt that. I completely made that up and lived a long time with that interpretation as if it were "truth. It is not. My left and right brain are connected, not separate. "As one eye sees, the other eye feels."
I am pleased with the results. I learned new stuff. I've grown some creatively. that's always nice. At least for my flower shots, I think I will continue to use this approach; to purposely finding and deciding, "What's the Story?" and then use my tech side to guide my creative feelings.
Some of you suspected that I had a second, even bigger entry for the “Year In Review” LUGNuts challenge in the works. What, a guy can’t submit a small hot rod and call it done? Well, it seems your gut instincts were right…introducing Sgt. Ballbreaker, my fighter war plane inspired rat rod! Just like real fighting aces, it features a snarling grin, American aircraft insignias, headers that resemble torpedoes and the roof opens like a real fighter plane canopy! And check out that rough and tumble camouflage “paintjob”! I’m pretty happy with this one and I’m guessing you’ll be too...otherwise Sgt. Ballbreaker will have to ask not too kindly…“What’s your major malfunction, maggots?! Now drop and give me twenty!! Twenty comments, that is!”

Playing around with some lights last night! I hope I'll be able to use lightpainting on the scenes I'll shoot in the future!

This is from a friends farm where they have horses. You can see all the different color horse hairs throughout along with small sticks.
Not fond of posting personal pictures on social media, but this one is very special to me and I think it turned out pretty well :)

Flooded Sacramento Valley wetlands in the early morning
While I tell myself that I go to places like this to photograph birds, the truth is that little spots like this one may be more my target. Imagine waking many hours before dawn, and against your instincts starting to move quickly and efficiently to arise, make breakfast, fix lunch, brew coffee, and load a car. Then drive many hours in the dark, radio playing, as the invisible landscape slides past and the world consists mostly of what I see in the headlight beams. Getting close to my destination the sky begins to glow a bit, but I'm still driving, in the world of a noisy car and freeway speeds.
Finally I leave the freeway and drive a relatively short distance to my Central Valley destination. My first stop is still all business — arriving, I park and change into cold weather clothing and set up camera and lenses and get back in the car. I start out on some gravel road around the area I've chosen to photograph, though the sun has yet to rise, and I'm focused on finding birds to photograph. A bit later I finally begin to slow down, and with the car windows rolled down in the cold morning air I stop and turn the motor off and sit next to a place like this one and everything is finally still.

“Trying not to believe things when in your heart you are almost sure they are true, is as bad for the temper as anything I know.”

You aspire to the free heights, your soul thirsts for the stars. But your wicked instincts, too, thirst for freedom. Your wild dogs want freedom; they bark with joy in their cellar when your spirit plans to open all prisons. To me you are still a prisoner who is plotting his freedom.
