Sea cliffs rise high above Kalawao on the Kalaupapa Peninsula of Moloka'i, Hawai'i. Spend any time researching Moloka'i, and the name Father Damien will be mentioned numerous times. In 1873, the priest volunteered to move to the peninsula and help care for the people suffering from Hansen’s disease. One of his first duties was to build a church, the St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church in Kalawao. This is the incredible view near the grounds of the humble church. It is also the place where the ships dropped off those diagnosed with leprosy, sometimes throwing them overboard. After helping countless families through unimaginable times, Father Damien himself eventually became a victim of the disease, and died at age 49. It is somewhat remarkable, since 95% of humans are naturally immune from it. It is a surreal experience to be surrounded by such raw and natural beauty in a place with so many heartbreaking stories. But, if you get the chance while on or even near Moloka'i, definitely take the time to do the Damien Tour of Kalaupapa. #hawaii #molokai #kalaupapa

Mauna Kea is one of the best spots (if not the best spot) in the world for astronomy. Because of Hawaii’s isolation from the rest of the world, the skies are dark and clear of pollution. Since it is close to the equator, most of the night sky is unobstructed. And because of Mauna Kea's height in the atmosphere, the skies are generally free of clouds and water vapor. As good as the conditions are for the 12 expensive telescopes atop the summit, the human eye actually has a harder time focusing on distant objects because of the lack of oxygen at 13,796 feet. That’s why the visitor information station is located at 9,200 feet in elevation. Every night, multiple telescopes are set up for anyone to view. Volunteers help point out stars, constellations, planets, and even other galaxies. If you are at all interested in knowing more about our universe, this is a really cool place to visit. It’s totally free; you just have to get yourself to the Big Island of Hawai’i! #hawaii #bigisland #maunakea

In 1798, Captain George Vancouver presented King Kamehameha I with five black longhorn cattle. Soon the cows multiplied into the thousands, and John Parker was hired to shoot the wild cows for their meat and hides. In less than a year, beef replaced sandalwood as the Big Island’s main export. Parker purchased and leased land from the royal family and started Parker Ranch, which grew to be the largest privately owned ranch in America at one point. Today, Parker Ranch and its grazing cattle are still a huge part of the Waimea area. In fact, I think I may have had one for dinner. #hawaii #waimea #bigisland

The Waipi'o Valley is a sacred place to many. Look at it – it's incredible! Ancient Hawaiian chiefs used to meet here for important decisions, and at one point, thousands lived down in the valley. That all changed when a tsunami devastated this entire coast in 1946. Today, the only people living down there are the ones who don't have modern (in)conveniences like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Although the public is allowed, it is still a place to be respected. You can hike down on foot, pay a tour provider, or take the 25-percent-grade hill if you have four-wheel drive. ginienos: Ed and I hiked across the valley floor, up the to the top of that cliff, then another 9 miles in to the next valley. That's where I got the seeds for the lemon trees in my yard.
