Soaring in a glider 6,000 feet above the 'Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) and Pipiwai Trail on the east side of Maui. Coincidentally, I hiked that exact area earlier in the day. As cool as it was on the ground, this view of the volcanic island from above is hard to beat! #hawaii #maui #soaring #glider

The 800-foot descent (in 0.6 miles) to the black sand beach in the Waipi'o Valley requires either a four-wheel drive vehicle or a pair of really strong hiking legs. If you can somehow make it down from the lookout to the valley floor, it is well worth the effort. #hawaii #bigisland #waipiovalley

Sea cliffs rise high above Kalawao on the Kalaupapa Peninsula of Moloka'i, Hawai'i. Spend any time researching Moloka'i, and the name Father Damien will be mentioned numerous times. In 1873, the priest volunteered to move to the peninsula and help care for the people suffering from Hansen’s disease. One of his first duties was to build a church, the St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church in Kalawao. This is the incredible view near the grounds of the humble church. It is also the place where the ships dropped off those diagnosed with leprosy, sometimes throwing them overboard. After helping countless families through unimaginable times, Father Damien himself eventually became a victim of the disease, and died at age 49. It is somewhat remarkable, since 95% of humans are naturally immune from it. It is a surreal experience to be surrounded by such raw and natural beauty in a place with so many heartbreaking stories. But, if you get the chance while on or even near Moloka'i, definitely take the time to do the Damien Tour of Kalaupapa. #hawaii #molokai #kalaupapa
