A year after its (re)modeling in LEGO on the 3D Stud.io software by BrickLink, it was time to reproduce it in real life !

Here is my faithful replica of the new One World Tarde Center in New York, made up of more than 28,000 LEGO bricks, assembled in more than 60 hours, and illuminated at night with LEDs !

A little bit of history first, One World Trade Center nicknamed “Freedom Tower” and its 541 meters high (1,776 feet, corresponding to the year of the United States Declaration of Independence) is the tallest tower in New York, in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. 🇺🇸

It’s also the most expensive tower in the world, costing nearly $3.9 billion, and is the most technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable skyscraper. 🌟

But now, in LEGO ???

This centerpiece is part of my project consisting of almost faithfully reproducing the new Ground 0 - World Trade Center district in LEGO.

It went through several versions before arriving at this final version which is more geometric, more voluminous and better worked.

Admire these inclined facades !

I won’t be able to describe every detail here since there are a lot, but the main points are :

- More than 28,000 parts.

- The building measures 2.25 m (7.4 ft) with a scale of 1:245 ! 📏

- It includes the almost faithfully reproduced One World Observatory platform as well as all the floors of the tower.

- It’s lit at night with LEDs for the floors, as well as addressable RGB LEDs for the lobby and antenna that can change color individually.💡

I wanted to thank BlueBrixx for providing me with alternative LEGO Trans-Clear plates for the lobby as well as rigid hoses for the metal rings on the roof.

Design Insights XLVIII

Telltale signs of a bygone era are positively replete across the city of Rome; that is, if you know where to look! For many visitors, Piazza Navona is among the first stops of any respectable itinerary. It was there, at Bernini Ristorante, where I had the first meal of my inaugural trip to the Eternal City in 2019. Admittedly, it's a bit of a tourist trap, but one that felt right given its namesake's (Gian Lorenzo Bernini's) influence over the urban design of the modern city.

More than anyone else since the emperors of antiquity, Bernini left his mark on the city with an unassailable volume of architectural, sculptural and urban development projects, including the design of the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi at the center of Piazza Navona. Much of the canvas on which Bernini and his contemporaries built, however, was put down by the emperors of Rome. One such emperor, Domitian, was himself responsible for the shape of Piazza Navona. Domitian built a Stadium on the site in the late first century CE, alongside countless other projects to restore the grandeur of the Campus Martius in the aftermath of the fire of 80 CE.

To this day, the cobblestone pavement of Piazza Navona echoes the gravel terrain on which athletes competed in quadrennial games, in the Greek tradition. The buildings which encircle the piazza were built atop the cavea of this ancient stadium. These partially excavated foundations are accessible today, and are included in these insights. Let's now explore this ancient landmark hidden - if just below the surface - in plain sight.

📜 The addition of the gladiatorial training grounds in this week's Design Insights marks the culmination of the digital design for Phase II of SPQR! Since July, there have been seventeen Design Insights posts highlighting new areas of the Eternal City each week. All told, this work represents roughly 7.7 million square feet over dozens of meters in elevation and consists of more than 107,000 individual bricks; all of which will inevitably result in a landscape diorama of over 211,000 bricks once built and integrated with Phase I.

A Boy’s Brain

This is my MOC entitled, “Mental: A Boy’s Brain” completed around February of 2022. To round out the rest of the series on suffering, this one takes it in in a left field direction compositionally. I think it looks the most dissimilar from the other two, but hopefully you can notice some visual similarity in the border and such.

I’ve always really loved Nannan Z.’s work with Metamorphosis of the Mind (Echo of Silence, Cry of Dreams, & Legacy of Vision) and this takes some inspiration accordingly – albeit, this one had to be boiled down into a 16x16 vignette. In case someone is wondering, the objects included in vignette are not supposed to be anything specific – I’m leaving it up to interpretation for whoever may see something in it.

This is part 3 in a 3 part series I did on 16x16 vignettes about suffering. The whole series I saw as an exercise to really push technique, parts usage, and composition.

Monster House

Built for the WindyCityLUG Trick-Or-Treat Street collaborative project where members make connecting 16x16 vignettes of Trick-Or-Treat houses. I decided to take mine in a completely different direction to ward off any lousy kids. Heavily based on the movie of the same name, but I've never seen it - only ever the TV commercials growing up. This is probably the most Olive Green I've ever used - IMPLUG would be proud.

Entered in the @letsbuildseries #LetsBuildSpooky contest.

Stay spooky out there!
