The latest Design Insights for my years-long project to build the entirety of Imperial Rome are now posted on my Patreon page! These insights cover the VELABRUM; the region of Ancient Rome which sat at a crossroads between the Capitoline and Palatine Hills.
Like the Arch of Janus depicted in the sneak peek rendering, this post marks a turning point in the progression of this project which I first announced on the Kalends of January. It has taken some time to lift off the ground, but the steadfast support of all my patrons has helped me reach a point where the design updates will now be coming fast & furious over the next several weeks of intense design efforts.
I very much still need your support in making this project a reality! It's no stretch to say that this is my most comprehensive - and exciting - project to date. It takes a village to realize any ambitious undertaking, but this is certainly not without its rewards. I encourage you to visit my Patreon page and consider contributing. To put it another way, the soldiers are being mustered, the generals have made their offerings at the Temple of Mars Ultor, and the legions are now marching toward the frontier for the long campaign season ahead! Onward - and festina lente!
The image is the trail of Mars InSight carried by the Atlas V rocket. We originally went to Lompoc to watch the launch more closely, however, it was found to be extremely foggy so we were forced to escape eastwards at ~2:30am after I checked satellite imagery that the strong water vapour would drop in the east. As we drove past Santa Ynez and climbed up the mountains, stars began to appear. We decided to stop at a pullout to the SE of Lake Cachuma, as the sky was decent, only with some high clouds. But unfortunately, only ~2min before the rocket launch time, the fog found its way to the pullout and soon almost all the stars disappeared and even the waning Moon looked dim. But we had no time to escape. Several seconds after the liftoff, we managed to see a blob of light rising in the west. After reaching to a less airmass, the view turned way better. So I immediately adjusted the camera settings and was able to get a shot as shown. The rocket faded away in the smog. Visibility was so poor that we didn't see any separations.
The bright star near the bottom is Jupiter. Roughly ~2min after the rocket was gone, we heard the booming sound from its engines, mixed with cricket singings. Not a bad experience. Only if we could have a clear view!
ISO 800, Canon 60D, Rokinon 16mm, stop down to f/8.0, 41 s, single exposure. The bright glow in the left is from the Moon.

The fairing for NASA's InSight mission arrives in the west high bay of the Astrotech Space Operations processing facility on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. InSight will launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V 401 rocket. InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, will study processes that formed and shaped Mars. Its findings will improve understanding about the evolution of our inner solar system's rocky planets, including Earth. The lander will be the first mission to permanently deploy instruments directly onto Martian ground using a robotic arm.
