As its English names suggest, the Gatekeeper (also known as the Hedge Brown) is often encountered where clumps of flowers grow in gateways and along hedgerows and field edges. It is often seen together with the Meadow Brown and Ringlet, from which it is easily distinguished when basking or nectaring with open wings.
The colour and patterning of the wings are very variable and about a dozen aberrations have been named. Favourite nectar sources include Wild Marjoram, Common Fleabane, ragworts, and Bramble.
It is widespread in southern Britain and its range has extended northwards in recent years. Its range is far more localized in southern Ireland.

When I first came to Pu'er over six years ago, this species, and indeed all of the Riodinidae, were very common, and occupied a lot of my time in the field as their territoriality made them extremely photogenic. Spottings have drastically declined over the years. On this particular day, I encountered two individuals flitting about deep inside a thicket of Camellias (tea), the first sighting of this species for me for at least three years.

With the pre-Summer emergence of cicadas underway, their inaugural daytime flights after emerging the previous night are usually clumsy and ill-directed; but in this case, the inappropriate landfall provides a pretty contrast.

Species of Eurydema are dramatically coloured, usually red and black bugs, but often with other colour morphs. The red and black form of this species can be distinguished from the smaller E. dominulus by the presence of dark marks along the edge of the corium. E. ornata also has a pale morph in which the ground colour is whitish-yellow.
Thank you for your visit, kind comments and fave. Always greatly appreciated.*_^
