I generally prefer shooting butterflies and bees in the lantana, but the dipterans can be intresting too - Happy Fly Day Friday!
This spectacular critter showed up at the mistflowers with the flies, bees and butterflies. I had no idea what it was - it's pretty striking, with the bright colors and long feathered legs. The Seek app on iOS immediately came up with Texas wasp moth, Horama panthalon, texana subspecies. Fortunately, it was in no hurry working the flowers, so I had time for quite a few shots. A great surprise in the garden...it's beautiful!
Another example of mimicry in the insect world - fascinating...
Beats me how I could have bees hard at work in my yard in the middle of winter here. There are a few succulents beginning to bloom like this one, but the blooms are just starting to open. Poor little bee was really digging in, working hard.

These are all over the place now, and we're starting to see the damage they can do. Still, not many other insects around, and a photo op is a photo op...
I saw these two on a guara stem. For days now the guara plants have been hosting many of these weird little critters...
