University of Michigan Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Professor Almantas Galvanauskas from the G. Mourou Center for Ultrafast Optical Science has found a way to get high average power out of a compact laser system, and has proven that the method can be scaled up. This technology could lead to a new class of portable systems useful for a wide range of applications, including the safe detection of dangerous materials, nuclear spectroscopy, imaging, and medical applications; it could also, one day, enable more compact accelerators.
His patented technique is called Coherent Pulse Stacking Amplification (CPSA), one letter off from Mourou’s CPA technique – and it was inspired by CPA.
It's the next generation of laser technology, and goes beyond what ZEUS (and CPA) can do. Zeus is a high intensity laser, but it shoots out only one pulse per second, on average, so it doesn’t generate much power. Almantas is developing laser technology that will achieve high average power by using repetition rates 4 orders of magnitude higher than ZEUS. This will make the science practical, and enable new ways of exploring fundamental science. He does intend to commercialize the technology.

Working in a neo noir style.
Technically I've found that moving Zone 6 as Sony sensors record it and creating an input correction curve post-Demosaic that lowers it to Zone 5 sets the kind of deep tones I'm looking for.
As a side note: Sony sensors are very very quiet in the shadow regions. There is so much usable information deep into the -EV scale.
When "testers" and commenters across the internet make claims about dynamic range I see what they report to be 1 to 2 stops narrower dynamic range than what I achieve. The difference is that I rise the mid-tones in my Digital Zone System luminosity curves which usefully raises the shadows down to 020202hex - where I take things to be pure black.
My Sony A7 can record 14.5EV to 15EV of usable f-stop range. Yes. It's true. Same with an A6300 that I have. The A6000, NEX-7, NEX-5T, and A5000 all record just about 14EV dynamic range.
The A7RII I just picked up looks like it's good for between 14EV and 14.5EV. This surprised me as I thought the backside illumination might set a more solid base noise level. Perhaps it's all those pixels?
In any event, I would really like to try a Sony A7S to see how it does. Anyone have one and have a few minutes to record some RAW data for me? Or loan me for 10 minutes so I could run my input correction curve calculations? These cameras are getting cheap enough that I might even be able to buy a used copy myself. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for one.
Trying to demonstrate that various combinations of swing paths and racket face angles can yield similar trajectories and shot depths for slices. Pace and spin vary, though the depths remain fairly similar with the same swing speed. Threw in a "dropper" input for fun, too. :-) The Windows "Snipping Tool" under "Accessories" is right handy for this sort of cropping of "screen shots", and easy to use. Below these "inputs" in "Shot Maker", it shows the trajecories of the shots in graph form, and tells you all about the pace and spin (and other stuff that's way over my head as well).

Resident input is needed for the process, which will help define "priorities for parks, recreation facilities, trails and open spaces for the next five to ten years," said Larry Foos, Director of Parks & Recreation.

On Wednesday, July 27, representatives from the City's Planning and Development Services Department held three meetings to share updates on the proposed changes to the City's ordinance that prohibits bars from locating within 500 feet of existing bars.
This is a photograph from the 4th annual running the East of Ireland Marathons Staplestown Marathon, Half Marathon and 10KM road races which were held in the village of Staplestown, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday 23rd January 2016 at 09:00. The event is organised by East of Ireland Marathons with local support and input. The races all started and ended in the village of Staplestown which is about 2 miles from the entrance to Donadea Forest Park. All races were held on the same loop of approximately 10KM in distance where the marathon runners covered 4 loops plus a short out and back section, half marathoner covered 2 loops and some out and back and the 10KM runners simply completed the full loop. The loop is well known to local runners as it connects the village of Staplestown with the larger village of Properous, Co. Kildare. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. Looking for input on my lighting technique. I've got five in this series, each with a little different look. Lighting setup was large softbox with grids and AB800, camera right, Fill: AB400 with 30 degree grid, camera left, hairlight with 30 degree grid high and to the left, strip box lighting the background.

FAO has distributed farm inputs worth over US$ 623,000.00 to over 6,500 food insecure households in The Gambia. This FAO-supported programme covered households in the North Bank Region (NBR), Lower River Region (LRR), Central River Region (CRR) and Upper River Region (URR)). These regions have stunting rates above the national average. The intervention aims to reverse the trend through increased crops (rice, maize, groundnuts) production and productivity. An early input device. It's quite beautiful - I like the angled grain of the walnut veneer and the swirly pattern of the ball itself (which is actually a bowling ball).
The 'BALL' button acts like a regular mouse button. I find its position quite intriguing - and the fact that it says 'BALL' rather than, say, 'SELECT'.
It is on my colleague's desk. Apparently it still works - although it's not a USB connection. This one has bearings under the ball but other models used compressed air to 'float' the ball.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. This is a photograph from the 4th annual running the East of Ireland Marathons Staplestown Marathon, Half Marathon and 10KM road races which were held in the village of Staplestown, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday 23rd January 2016 at 09:00. The event is organised by East of Ireland Marathons with local support and input. The races all started and ended in the village of Staplestown which is about 2 miles from the entrance to Donadea Forest Park. All races were held on the same loop of approximately 10KM in distance where the marathon runners covered 4 loops plus a short out and back section, half marathoner covered 2 loops and some out and back and the 10KM runners simply completed the full loop. The loop is well known to local runners as it connects the village of Staplestown with the larger village of Properous, Co. Kildare.
