A new series starts today with an early morning road trip to Limon in eastern Colorado. The winter chill on the plains and some of the small rural towns that are slowly dying off made for some interesting moments.
The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.
Around 50 to 60 million years ago, during the Paleocene Epoch, Antrim was subject to intense volcanic activity, when highly fluid molten basalt intruded through chalk beds to form an extensive lava plateau. As the lava cooled, contraction occurred.
Horizontal contraction fractured in a similar way to drying mud, with the cracks propagating down as the mass cooled, leaving pillarlike structures, which are also fractured horizontally into "biscuits". In many cases the horizontal fracture has resulted in a bottom face that is convex while the upper face of the lower segment is concave, producing what are called "ball and socket" joints. The size of the columns is primarily determined by the speed at which lava from a volcanic eruption cools.
The extensive fracture network produced the distinctive columns seen today. The basalts were originally part of a great volcanic plateau called the Thulean Plateau which formed during the Paleocene.
According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story goes that the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), from the Fenian Cycle of Gaelic mythology, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet. In one version of the story, Fionn defeats Benandonner. In another, Fionn hides from Benandonner when he realises that his foe is much bigger than he is. Fionn's wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the 'baby', he reckons that its father, Fionn, must be a giant among giants. He flees back to Scotland in fright, destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn would be unable to chase him down.
Across the sea, there are identical basalt columns (a part of the same ancient lava flow) at Fingal's Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa, and it is possible that the story was influenced by this.
In overall Irish mythology, Fionn mac Cumhaill is not a giant but a hero with supernatural abilities, contrary to what this particular legend may suggest. In Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry (1888) it is noted that, over time, "the pagan gods of Ireland [...] grew smaller and smaller in the popular imagination, until they turned into the fairies; the pagan heroes grew bigger and bigger, until they turned into the giants". There are no surviving pre-Christian stories about the Giant's Causeway, but it may have originally been associated with the Fomorians (Fomhóraigh); the Irish name Clochán na bhFomhóraigh or Clochán na bhFomhórach means "stepping stones of the Fomhóraigh". The Fomhóraigh are a race of supernatural beings in Irish mythology who were sometimes described as giants and who may have originally been part of a pre-Christian pantheon

the ongoing vandalism in copenhagen and other Danish towns at the hands of groups of young muslims was provoked by the re-publication in all major Danish newspapers of the infamous jyllandsposten cartoons. every night sees new fires, yet none of them as serious as the press make them appear.
I had to go see the remains of last night's biggest fire, steen eiler rasmussen's tingbjerg school, for myself. at first, the newspaper web sites reported that half the school had burnt down. in fact, only a few rooms were destroyed. the photo shows the full extent of the damage, approximately 300 square meters according to the copenhagen fire department.
the re-publication of the cartoons - which could appear to some as the press producing their own news - was in turn provoked by the announcement from the Danish secret service that they had thwarted the assassination of one of the cartoonists.
apparently, the secret service intervened so early in the planning of the murder that very little evidence was secured. new draconian anti-terror laws mean that the accused men will not be brought to trial in denmark but instead simply extradited to their country of origin, in this case a north african nation with - according to amnesty international - a history of using torture.
the murder plans, quite correctly classified by the authorities as terrorism, are part of an international agenda that we have very little influence on in denmark, I believe, cartoons or no cartoons. but the fact that kids across the country might think arson the best way to express their beliefs and be heard is a real blow to the welfare state. denmark has never been richer or known less unemployment than today, yet here is a large group, entirely marginalized, whose actions seem rooted in the deepest hopelessness.

Guarding the Chùa Tây Thiên Buddhist Temple.
Guardian lion statues originated and became popular in Chinese Buddhism, features a pair of highly stylized lions—often one male with a ball which represents the material elements and one female with a cub which represents the element of spirit— that were thought to protect buildings from harmful spiritual influences and harmful people that might be a threat.
These statues are also known by the names: Fu (Foo) Dogs, Fu (Foo) Lions, Lion Dogs, and shishi. Since this male (the female is on the other side of the entrance) is guarding Chùa Tây Thiên, a Vietnamese Buddhist temple, it's called Sư tử đá.

Beau bâtiment d'angle aux influences médiévales telle une tour de château fort. Il fut construit au tournant du XXe siècle par Jiří Stibral surement pendant le grand assainissement du quartier juif limitrophe.
L'édifice se caractérise également par ses petits lucarnes semblables à l'église vue précédemment mais également par une partie à colombages pour le coté gothique. Pour autant on est dans le pur historicisme / éclectisme puisque ajouté à cela on a par exemples un fronton en demi-cercle, colonnes doriques ainsi que des mini-oriel bien néo-renaissances, les encadrement des fenêtres sont vraiment hétérogènes avec notamment sur la plupart une petite sauce sécession ou gothique ou les deux à la fois.
Bref un immeuble de son temps qui est parvenu jusqu'à nous dans un état impeccable au bout de la rue.

Svanemølle Power Station in Copenhagen. Built 1947 to 1953, influenced by American highrise architecture. Initially fuelled with coal, then converted to oil and now until it will be shut down with natural gas. Amager Bakke (see previous) will replace it. Not entirely satisfied with the quality, my lightweight tripod wasn't up to the task in the gusty winds. Will return an early morning with my heavy-duty tripod to catch the rising sun shining onto the front of the building.
I have been inspired by a friend to do something with some of my 'given to me' scrap fabric pieces.
This is going to be fun!

The Influence is a historic house on Main Street in Monhegan, Maine. Built in 1826, it is one of the largest and oldest houses in the small island community, built by the son of the last person to own the entire island. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The first European settlement began in 1803 as a military camp at Risdon Cove on the eastern shores of the River Derwent, amid British concerns over the presence of French explorers. In 1804, along with the military, settlers and convicts from the abandoned Port Phillip settlement, the camp at Risdon Cove was moved by Captain David Collins to a better location at the present site of Hobart at Sullivans Cove. The city, initially known as Hobart Town or Hobarton, was named after Lord Hobart, the British Secretary of State for war and the colonies.
