Inspired by one of my all-time favorite vintage 50's dresses (made by "Slimuette"), I've reverse-engineered it's best features into my design & dressmaking. Why do I love this design (love it so much that I've worn my vintage version to shreds)? Because:

- it really fits (standing, sitting, walking, reaching),

- it actually flatters (with classic design "tricks" that make the body appear slimmer), - & it's everyday wear appropriate (not too fancy, not too plain, just right).

My version of the Slimuette Dress has:

• a roomy bodice (top), shaped with princess seaming & bust darts, plus a center-front panel on the lower bodice that holds everything in without being binding (the secret = it's lined for reinforcement + structure & uses bias-cutting to gently shape).

• short, kimono-style sleeves (cut of a piece with the bodice)

• separate, pleated panels that frame the front neckline in a soft, v-shape (in this version, these are done in a double layer of vintage black lace).

• a 2-piece, front-band trim across the bust that completes the retro-look (while also hiding the seam that joins the center-bodice panels), finished with a vintage button, for more sassy class.

• a generous (but not too full), 4 panel skirt (bottom), designed for more room through the "seat" (i.e. room for sitting down comfortably)

• shaped, hip-line front pockets that visually slim the look here, plus give you a place to put your hands/other stuff.

Dress fabric here is a vintage, late-1950's cotton with a plaid & medallions print. Super!

My New A-line skirt has a classic, shape that's made to flatter & fit (without bunching or bulging). Design features include:

• front hip pockets

• contoured waistband

• side-zipper & button closure

• topstitching on pocket opening edges, waistband, and (double-rolled) bottom hem.

Fabric is a vintage, 1970's knit polyester.

By far, the most popular skirt I make, and the one that started HissyFit as a business, over 9 years ago.

I love making skirts that are easy-care, figure-flattering, and just fun to wear. A-line shaped & hemmed to just-above-the-knee, this skirt is simple but really looks great on lots of body types (curvy, lean, petite, tall). The slip-on, elastic waist style gives room to breathe, move, and groove.

Oh, and then there's the POCKET: an important feature that's often left off of women's clothes (like we all want to carry purses or bags all of the time, really?) Unlike the flimsy side pockets on most women's clothes, the uterus pocket on this skirt is just the right size (7.5" by 4.5") to hold your most important stuff (phone, small wallet, etc.), and the durable (satin stitch) applique is made to hold up, even with lots of wear & washing. Pocket placement makes it perfect for active-wear (biking, rocking out, etc.) without risking losing your stuff (from either gravity or pick-pockets).

Plus, it's just cool & fun to wear.

This one's made out of vintage 1970s knit poly (my preferred fabric choice for this skirt style, since it holds the a-line shape well and is easy-care, hard-to-stain, and lasts and lasts and lasts). Uterus pocket is a from a scrap of 1970's nylon knit with a dot print. Navy rick rack trim (also vintage) completes the look.
