Premier Jason Kenney and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen discussed the government’s support for increasing access to global markets for Alberta’s agri-food sector during a news conference held at Lewis Farms near Spruce Grove, Alberta on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

Alberta’s government is working to increase investment in the province and to better sell Alberta agriculture products around the world.

To help increase international exports, specific trade and investment officers will join Invest Alberta’s international offices in Mexico City, and Singapore. The province’s international offices in the United States and the European Union will also each welcome one new staff member. This will complement Alberta agriculture’s international exposure in the Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo and New Delhi offices.

Raising Alberta’s profile as an attractive investment destination in global markets is a key outcome of the Investment and Growth Strategy to increase provincial exports.

“In such trying times, the entrepreneurial spirit of Albertans continues to remain unmatched. Alberta’s farmers and ranchers are the hardest working and most innovative in the world and provide renowned products like Alberta Beef. Improving market access is critical to the growth and long-term success of Alberta’s farmers and ranchers. Putting experienced, intelligent and driven people on the ground will create countless opportunities for our thriving agriculture sector and support them for generations to come.” said Premier Kenney. The increase to Earned Income Credit and Personal Exemption to help working families and stimulate local economies. This legislation, Senate Bill 400, doubles the state's Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) over two years, saving low-income workers an extra $105 million per year. The new law also benefits all Illinois taxpayers by improving the value of the personal exemption and indexing it to inflation. This Bill provides the largest increase in Illinois' EITC since its inception in 2000, bu phasing in a 5 percent increase over two years. The bill boosts the state's EITC from its current level at 5 percent of federal EITC, to 7.5 percent in tax year 2012 and 10 percent of federal EITC in tax year 2013. More than 2.5 million state residents benefited from the Illinois EITC in 2010. The Bill was co-sponsored by Sen. Toi Hutchinson and House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie who both attended the signing.

Side event: Gender matters in forestry - challenges and opportunities

An increasing body of research shows the importance of paying attention to gender in forestry. Significant gender differences have been observed in the division of labor, access and rights to forest resources and participation in decision-making. Gender-unequal institutional arrangements are often embedded in existing gender relations, and also a result of discriminatory state policies, customary practices, and market systems. As gender relations penetrate the politics and economics of natural resource management, lack of attention to gender by policy makers and practitioners risk meeting sustainable environmental goals while possibly causing adverse impacts for women. Carefully drafted gender-sensitive policies and interventions could help transform unequal gender relations in forested landscapes. This event – organized by CIFOR, ICRAF, Bioversity and FAO – aims to bring together research organizations, policy makers, NGOs and development practitioners to discuss the current state of gender and forestry, to identify emerging challenges and opportunities, and to share best practices of integrating gender into forest policy and practice. The event will be structured as a panel discussion followed by a Q&A-session, focusing on following topics: -How are policy makers, CSOs and development agencies currently addressing gender issues in forest policy and practice? -What are some of the key constraints and solutions to integrating gender into forestry policy and practice? -What are the benefits of women’s participation and leadership in cooperatives and producers organizations? -What are the emerging challenges and opportunities for combining goals regarding gender equality and environmental sustainability in the post-2015 agenda? During the event, FAO's report on “Mainstreaming gender into forest policies in Asia and the Pacific” will be launched. Participating organizations will also share information material. Lunch is served at the venue.

In an attempt to increase tourism, Belfast City Council designated a number of cultural quarters at the beginning of the new millennium, and it was then that the Cathedral Quarter was born, The area is named after St. Anne's Cathedral. The church was built between the years of 1899 and 1904 and enjoys a central setting on Donegall Street, beside Ulster University.

This week was the first time that I got the opportunity to see the inside of St. Anne’s Cathedral and to be honest I think that it will be the last time.

I am not religious so in theory it should not worry or bother me that the place had the feeling of a commercial enterprise rather than that of a ‘house of god’. Upon entering the building the interior struck me as being styled in the manner on a modern art gallery rather than a cathedral but in a way it could be described as attractive or even beautiful but it totally lacks atmosphere.

Before I visited Belfast I checked some tourist guides and they all indicated that entry to the cathedral was free but that donations were appreciated. When I went into the Cathedral much of of the centre was cordoned-off as some work was in progress.

There was a merchandising section not far from the entrance and this was manned by a lady who was having a conversation with two people who were either guides or church officials, they were dressed in blue. I was nearly at the altar when I was approached by the lady who explained that there was a nominal fee which needed to be paid before I left.

While I would describe the place as attractive and bright I did not find it in anyway interesting but this could because I am not at all comfortable with a church that features military artefacts as a major attraction.

I took a few photographs and then went to pay the ’nominal fee’ and I was more than surprised when I was informed that the cost of entry was £5.00.

Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.

History

The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.

System

Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.

The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.

The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.

My photo meets the project goals because it uses texture to improve it. This photo is improved by texture because the smooth texture of the melting ice is contrasting the fluffy looking snow. To take this photo I went outside and saw some ice that was melting next to the snow. I noticed the contrast and decided to take a few shots at different angles. To edit the photograph I increased the contrast, and vibrance. I also increased the intensity of the white snow. I think I did well however the one thing I would change would be to get more of the snow in the shot to show more contrast in texture.

Political Parties and CSOs Criticise Modi Government on its Economic Performance

New Delhi, March 15, 2019: “The BJP, before the 2014 elections, created an illusion of achchhe din. Though they promised to double farmers income, increasing Minimum Support Price (MSP) by 1.5 times, they did opposite everything of what they promised.” said Vijoo Krishnan, Central Committee Member of CPI-M, and Joint Secretary of All India Kisan Sabha, at the at the public meeting titled Rebuilding from an Economic Earthquake at the Constitution Club of India today. “The rural distress reached to the unprecedented levels, which were also aided by the vicious atmosphere of the hate created by the cow-vigilantism,” Krishnan added.

The meeting, jointly organised by Delhi Forum and the Financial Accountability Network India, witnessed Vijoo Krishnan, Central Committee Member of CPI-M, and Joint Secretary of All India Kisan Sabha; Kavita Krishnan, Polit Bureau Member, CPI-ML Liberation; Dr Sunilam, Samajwadi Party; and Dinesh Abrol, Professor, Institute of Studies in Industrial Development looking back and evaluating the performance of the five years of the Narendra Modi government on the economy and the immediate agenda for the next government.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr Sunilam, a senior leader of the Samajwadi Party, claimed that the difference in the Minimum Support Price and the market price of the agricultural products is over Rs 50,000 crore, higher than the Union Agriculture Budget. Similarly, the rise in the oil prices and inflation — and payment of GST on the fertilisers and produce — has also considerably increased the input price.

Kavita Krishnan, a Polit Bureau member of the CPIM-L, remarked: “The last four years witnessed, rising inequality, bank frauds, bank charges, systemic destruction of the institutions like NSSO, and denial of the information on the social spending and other crucial data.” She emphasised, “The only people who got benefitted were the rich, and the PSUs like HAL, BSNL, which were doing financially well, today can’t even pay salaries.” She also extended support to the right to employment and food security as the constitutional right, and the introduction of the wealth tax and inheritance tax for the corporate sector.

Professor Dinesh Abrol observed that the future of the Indian economy and development had been adversely impacted due to the policies of the Modi government. This has resulted in declining household incomes, unemployment etc. Citing the survey done by the All India Manufacturers Organisation (AIMO), Prof Abrol said, “post demonetisation, micro and small enterprises have suffered 35 % job losses and 50 per cent dip in revenues. Likewise, the Economic Survey 2017-18 revealed that the credit disbursed by the banks shows that out of a total outstanding credit of Rs. 26.04 billion as in November 2017, 82.6% of the amount was lent to large enterprises, and MSMEs got only 17.4% of total credit.” All this worsened the unemployment.

Access to a vaccine for Newcastle Disease (ND) has transformed the lives of communities in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha state.

Local inhabitants, who have traditionally bred poultry, would often experience the death of their flock during an outbreak of ND. The deadly disease has been known to kill entire flocks when an outbreak occurs.

A vaccine against ND was introduced in this district with the help of the Bhodal Milk Producers Cooperative Society (BMPCS), an Odisha based NGO, which in turn was supported by the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed). The vaccine has played a key role in saving the birds and has contributed to increased income and intake of protein in families.

He first heard of the vaccine about two years ago from Govardhan Naik, the local vaccinator and rural health worker. Having witnessed the death of his chickens year after year, he was keen to try anything that would stop the outbreaks.

The Mig-17 is a significantly enhanced version of the MiG-15. Changes include an increase in wing sweep and other aerodynamic changes, as well as a more powerful engine, the first Soviet engine to use an afterburner. Production of the MiG-17 was begun in 1953 and a total of 10,824 were built in Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and China. The MiG-17 was the primary fighter used by North Vietnam against the United States. It proved to be highly maneuverable and the fact that it was equipped with guns gave it a significant advantage over the missile-armed F-4 Phantom in close range combat. The Lim-5 is the Polish built version of the Fresco. A total of 222 were built between 1957 and 1960. They were primarily intended for close air support of ground troops.

Service History

This aircraft’s Polish service history is only partially known. Built between 1957 and 1960, by 1964 it was serving with an advanced training unit at Modlin Airbase. This unit provided advanced combat instruction for experienced pilots. By 1974, it was with the 58th Combat Training Regiment. In May 1980, it was delivered to the 38th Combat Training Regiment and was retired from that unit in May 1987.

The aircraft was acquired by the U.S. Air Force in 1988 and flown by civilian contractors for research projects conducted by the Defense Test and Evaluation Support Agency at Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Apparently retired to storage at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona around 1990.

Budget allocation to the education sector has been increased by more than 150 percent. Education Minister Deng Deng says this increase to the national education budget will be used to improve standards, and cater for out-of-school children, especially girls. The Minister was speaking on October 11th, 2016, at an event to commemorate the International Day of the Girl child, which was held at Juba Girls Secondary School. The event also marked National Girls Education Day and brought together students from different schools. The colourful event featured traditional dances, dramas, poems and games.

My first try of Tartine Double Fermented Rye Porridge Bread from Chad Robertson's Tartine Book No.3, with increased leaven (30%) and walnut oil. I changed the ratio of the flours to 70% bread/AP flour and 30% high-extraction flour.

I pre-fermented cracked rye berries overnight, soaking them in the water and 1/2 tsp leaven, then cooked them in the next morning, to make rye porridge. I cooked rye porridge longer than it was supposed to, to evaporate the extra moisture as much as possible while keeping it moist enough. The rye porridge tasted good itself, just with a small amount of salt.

Bulk rise was 4.5 hours at 77F. I folded 4 times in every 25 minutes during the initial hours of bulk rise, and let the dough untouched for the rest of the hours. Final rise was 6.5 hours overnight at 38F in the fridge. Baked with the lid for 20 minutes at 500F, then reduced the heat and baked at 450F for 10 more minutes, then 25 more minutes at 450F without the lid.

The oven spring was great, perhaps since it contained 70% while flour (the original recipe called for 50% white flour). I waited to slice the loaf for 24 hours after baking, since some bakers recommended that online. The crust was very thin and crisp, and the crumb was moist, soft and fluffy with nice open holes, not gummy or dense at all.

Rye flavor was certainly there but not too overwhelming, from the incorporated rye porridge which consisted 1/3 of the loaf, while keeping the white-bread-like soft airy texture of the crumb. I could not detect the walnut oil flavor almost at all, since all the flavors were nicely melded into one.

I had a toasted slice with a little bit of butter on it. The contrast between the thin crisp crust and the soft moist crumb was really nice, different from any other kind of breads I ever had before. It was like a soft/moist easy-to-digetst white bread packed with complex flavors of the whole grains. Chad Robertson certainly created an ideal bread that incorporated both great advantages of the texture of white bread and the taste/flavor of whole grain bread into one amazing loaf.

Local charities cope with increasing homelessness

By Ambria Hammel, ahammel@catholicsun.org

November 20, 2008

While Americans are still adjusting to the failing economy, monetary uncertainty is a way of life for the homeless.

Homeless shelters across Arizona are receiving an alarming number of requests. City mayors across the country are reporting an increase in homelessness, according to a recent survey.

Volunteers at St. Mary’s Basilica weekday morning meal program are also seeing more new faces among their regular guests.

“They’ve survived and they know where they can go,” Linda Raimundo, who runs the program, said of those homeless before the economic downturn.

While their numbers have decreased over the last six months, Raimundo said the faces are changing.

Others are turning to André House — a men’s shelter and soup kitchen in downtown Phoenix. Staff members are reporting an increase in numbers for the first time in six years.

Holy Cross Father Bill Wack, director of André House, said he’s serving more than 700 guests at least once a week. The total may have pushed that high only once or twice in the last five years. An average of 600-700 guests file through the soup line every night now.

Regular guests have noticed, but they don’t mind sharing the food. There’s enough to go around — although more and more is bought wholesale due to shortages at the food bank.

Guests know the larger crowd means stiffer competition for the shelter’s personal services.

“Now people are coming saying, ‘All the new people are taking our spots,’” Fr. Wack said. The shelter offers 30 slots daily for showers. The same group also receives clothes.

With the increasing demands of herbs and herbal supplement, many researchers are now introducing many preexisting herbs with tremendous health benefits. One such interesting herb is the Butea superba. Because of its most interesting health benefits, Butea Superba is gradually becoming very popular. This is one of those few herbs that has multiple of health benefits, including fatigue reduction, stimulating male fertility, improving the conditions in cancer patients and even lowering cholesterol.

Butea Superba is not new in Asia. It seems people in Thailand are aware of this botanical native for many years. In Thailand, this herb is traditionally used men to enhance male fertility and improve the sexual libido at an older age. Thai people also call this herb as the “rejuvenating herb.” After a number of researchers, it has been clear that this herb from the Papilionaceae family has several health benefits. Out of many of its species, only two varieties are commercially grown. Although there are very few scientific pieces of evidence to support the health benefits of this herb as a natural sexual enhancer, many users claim to have benefited from using this herb for a period of time. After a lot of online searches, I have come across some of the top health benefits of this herb.

Here is the list.

Butea Superba and its health benefits.

Male fertility enhancer:

People in Thailand already use this herb for centuries now. For them, this herb is a natural male performance booster. Butea Superba does contain some phytoandogens, which act as the androgenic hormones found in males. These hormones help men getting rid of fatigue, increase their muscle tone, improve their stamina and enhance their fertility. Those struggling with low energy and minimal strength can strongly benefit from this herb and its supplements. The male hormone-mimicking substances in Butea Superba naturally helps a person experiencing a boost in libido and sexual performance. Men with erectile dysfunction can also be benefited by using this herb. The positive hormonal effects of this herb can improve this health condition in males.

Cancer Treatment:

Although there are not many scientific pieces of evidence to prove the effects of Butea Superba and its effects on cancer, studies have claimed that this herb has some anti-carcinogenic effects. The phytochemicals present in this herb help in preventing a number of enzymatic reactions that usually occur inside the body of a cancer patient. Butea Superba can actually prevent multiplication of cancerous cells by blocking certain signals.

Improves cardiovascular health:

With some active flavonoids and phytonutrients, Butea Superba can help improving the cardiovascular function in a person. It seems the herb helps in lowering cholesterol level drastically, which is why it has a tremendous positive impact on the heart health. Although the exact mechanism behind the effects is still unclear, it is true that Butea Superba can improve a person’s heart condition. Rebalancing the hormonal levels is another effect of this herb. That eventually helps to keep the blood pressure under control, which in turn helps to improve the heart health.

Prevents hair Loss:

People with problems like alopecia and hair loss have found positive effects of Butea Superba. This herb can help strengthen your hair, prevent hair thinning and hair loss. Extracts of this herb can also stimulate hair growth in men and women.

Anti-Inflammation properties:

Butea Superba has certain compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties. People with inflammatory diseases, gout and hemorrhoids can be tremendously benefited from this herb. This herb can also be used for the treatment of patients with arthritis.

Bone Health:

Repeated use of this herbal supplement can help improve bone mineral density and joint health. People suffering from osteoporosis can be highly benefited by using this herb. Also, those with a regenerative bone disease can use Butea Superba for better bone health.

Those who are allergic to herb and herbal supplements should consult with a doctor before taking or using Butea superb. Pregnant and lactating women should never use any herbal supplement without consulting with their ob-gyn. Although there are no record of adverse effects of Butea Superba in woman and infants, the herb’s effects on hormonal balance can be dangerous for the mother and the baby. Therefore, speaking with your medical health advisor is highly recommended. You can also read more about Spartagen XT.

CANAL INFO:

The Leeds and Liverpool canal was built  from 1772 to increase industrial  transportation between West Yorkshire and  the Merseyside ports. Limestone, textiles and coal  were  in critical demand between Yorkshire and Lancashire at this time  where trains  were  still only  beginning to happen.  Committees in Bradford and Liverpool formed  and  for a while disputed over their  different respective plans for the route  Following appeasement, the route as proposed via  engineers John Longbotham and James Brindley was built at a cost of  nearly £260, 000  and a length of 109 miles.    The first phase, from Bingley to Shipley  was up and running  by 1774.  By this time,  Brindley had  passed, and Longbotham  had taken over as chief engineer. The  construction from the Liverpool end  reached Wigan in 1781.

The  canal's overall construction spanned  five decades,  delayed further by money and disputes and also the  colonial  war in the late 1700s.  Trade from Yorkshire to  Liverpool was already brisk  by the time construction  finished, including branches - significantly the ones to Bradford and Wigan.  Although both steam and horse drawn  railways  were  available  by 1800,  the  canal  continued to thrive for a century.

Horse drawn barges  would last impressively until 1960 while industrial  trade  remaining until the  1980s, by which time the bulk of such  work  was being done, quite inevitably by  trains and lorries.

Today,  the Leeds and Liverpool canal  stretches  for 127  miles, crossing the Pennines between the two cities, with additional branches bringing people - and still business - to and from  other towns in Yorkshire and Lancashire on its  journey.  91  locks  are included,  notably the notorious 5 Locks at Bingley, which  take  an apparent  3-4 hours to  negotiate.

The towpath is  used heavily by both walkers and  cyclists  on its route,  with the Leeds  end  being notably  active  especially  during commuter hours.  At  the newly developed Granary  Wharf, the  canal basin area has been heavily redeveloped in recent years while the  new  southern  entrance to Leeds station  also  providing  additionally  quick access to the canal route.

While investment in the digital health space has increased significantly over the past few years, raising capital by early stage digital health start-ups remains a tall challenge. There are far fewer routes to explore compared to the digital/social media space where angel and super angel funding is more readily available from alumni networks of Google, PayPal, LinkedIn, Facebook and a number of high profile incubators.

The current challenges are likely to persist as there appears to be few -- if any-- blockbuster VC-backed exits on the horizon in the digital health space which could unleash capital to reinvest in the eco-system. What must start-ups do in this environment to succeed? How should they adjust their operating plan? What can change the current state? And what types of funding should digital health companies utilize at different stages of growth?

Hear first hand from industry veterans from all sides of the funding puzzle what they expect, what they’re looking for and how they can help.
