The population has steadily increased since 2010. In 2015, the 14th Asiatic Lion Census was conducted over an area of about 20,000 km2 (7,700 sq mi); the lion population was estimated at 523 individuals, and in 2017 at 650 individuals.

The frigate (Q-2) ARA Libertad, built in the Rio Santiago Shipyard, is a sailing vessel with double topsails (five yards per pole that can be braced up to 45°) and three crossed masts (ratchet, major and mizzen), belonging to the Argentine Navy. The mission of the "Libertad" Frigate is to complete the professional training of the midshipmen of the Argentine Navy, contributing to the increase of their maritime knowledge and integrating them to life at sea. Likewise, it contributes to the foreign policy by representing the Argentine Republic in the ports where it comes to, where it disseminates the geographical, cultural and productive reality of its country. On the other hand, it fosters international naval relations, strengthening professional ties and friendship with the armies of other countries. In more than thirty-five instructional trips he has made, he visited 58 countries and more than 400 foreign ports.

Since its delivery, the frigate has traveled more than 800,000 nautical miles around the world and outside of its station has spent the equivalent of 17 years at sea. Around 11,000 Argentine sailors and friendly countries have passed through its covers and have been formed.

This panorama was a complete and utter nightmare to put together, in every way conceivable. The lighting in the scene itself was constantly changing between shots, leading to many different lighting inconsistencies between different sectors of the scene. Painstaking post editing was required to remove these without leaving a seam. Then, Photoshop failed to auto-blend some of the parts of the panorama, requiring me to do a significant amount of tweaking to get the alignment detection to work. Then I had issue getting the color from the top half to work with the bottom half, requiring more manual editing and layer tweaking.

Since all of this was done at 60 megapixels, Photoshop would take 15 seconds or so to process many of the requests I would send it.

It took about 8 hours to wind up with this result. Hopefully the rest of this shoot will not turn out to be this irritating.

I am satisfied with the result. I just wish the process wasn't such a headache.

Well I know some of our friends across the pond wouldn’t think so but it was bloody cold that night at -7°C. Thankfully there was not any problems to talk about so most of my time was spent indoors, one of the reasons why Astro photography rules.

This is the second time I’ve imaged NGC 1499 in just over a year and it’s not a lot different to my original image except this was taken with the Explore Scientific 102mm F7 APO Carbon giving me an increased field of view of just over 2°.

Note:

I removed all the stars after the initial processing using StarNet++ and then added the Ha Combined with the Oiii stars back in at the end.

NGC 1499 also commonly known as the “California Nebula” is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It’s almost 2.5 deg in length and is approximately 1000 Light Years from earth with an apparent magnitude of about 6.

Beautiful lavender fields might be associated more with the Provence, region in France, however Bulgaria had become world leader in the production and export of lavender oil in recent years and that goes hand in hand with increased amount of lavender fields across the country. Vising lavender fields during peak time is a pure joy from visual perspective, enhanced by the mesmerizing lavender smell with sound of countless busy bees collecting lavender nectar for honey production.

Visually reminiscent of the Age of Rail, which had a positive impact on the economy of Hillsboro, the Katy Depot stands today in close proximity to the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad lines as well as the Hill County Courthouse (National Register, 6/21/71), the focal point of the downtown commercial district. Hillsboro was established in 1853 to serve as the governmental seat and trade center for a basically agrarian county, cotton the primary crop. The completion of the MKT Railroad through Hillsboro in 1881 increased the commercial activity of the city and broadened its economic base. With locally raised funds, the citizens of Hillsboro purchased the right of way and property needed for a depot. Functional requirements dictated the size and massing of the structure which reflects architectural and decorative styles popular at the turn of the century, reminiscent of the Prairie style of architecture.

The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, commonly known as the Katy, was the first rail line to reach Hillsboro. Passenger service on the line, which connected Fort Worth and Temple, began on April 26, 1881, with four daily trains and a sleeper through to Chicago. The Katy Railroad brought a surge of economic activity to this agricultural region, becoming a major means of exporting cotton and livestock. As the economic base broadened, so did the population, which facilitated both residential and commercial expansion. Building materials were brought in by train and used to construct then contemporary structures. With the completion of the railroad several Katy buildings were constructed including: a frame station consisting of a waiting room, office, and a freight room; a cotton platform; and a section house. In 1894, Katy built division shops and a roundhouse in Hillsboro. The original station was converted to a freight house in 1902 and the present depot (seen in the photograph above) was erected on the land purchased by the city of Hillsboro. Throughout its operating years, the depot served as an integral part of the Hillsboro community. Among those visiting Hillsboro via the Katy were railroad tycoon Jay Gould, and Presidents Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, Calvin Coolidge, and Harry Truman. And, the depot served as the departure and arrival point for World War I and II soldiers serving their country.

On December 19, 1979, the Katy Depot (aka the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Company Railroad Depot) was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for its architecture, history, and being the location of historic events as described above. All of the information above was found on the original documents submitted for listing consideration which can be viewed here:

This was taken in an open field near our house with moderate to low light contamination. It was easily visible but the colors were faint. This photo was rather dark and I increased the brightness in Lightroom and removed some noise with Topaz Photo AI. I was never thinking that the seascape shooting can be so adventurous like this morning. I went with Michael to Shelly Beach-Manly to take some shots but I must have misunderstood his email. Seriously, when he told me that this was going to be an adventure, he was right!!

We decided that instead of walking for half an hour to our destination we would take the shortcut via a steep road down to the cliff in pitch black darkness (5.30 am). Well Michael had a flash light and I forgot mine at home, bottom line – we finally reached our destination with some additional scars, bruises and scratches on my legs and feet. I had slipped a couple of times and fell despite my Spiderman powers and my new wet shoes!!

We met Oat ( Hangingpixels) and few more photographers; good thing is to see how many people enjoy photography, sunrise and seascape shooting.

Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.

My increasing interest in wildlife is bringing about some lovely moments recently.

A location almost on our doorstep, not the remote isles of Scotland. So you can gather my excitement when I found out about the otters

We spent several hours, watching their behaviour, speedily motoring through the water, watching as they dived and following the trail of bubbles

I watched numerous times, as one firstly caught a fish, then brought back an eel for the kit, waiting on the bankside

Sadly the young kit, although quite agile in the water, seems to have a very bad eye problem with her/his left eye, which bulges significantly.

I wasn't sure which image to post but this one of the otter creating some wonderful ripples as it glides effortlessly through the water appealed

The story of this photo:

I am revisiting the shots I took in Thailand earlier this year. Unfortunately, many of the exterior shots suffer from a very misty and dull sky. So I processed this interior shot of Wat Phratat Doi Suthep. What bothers me about his shot though, is that it is not perfectly symmetrical. I did not pay enough attention when shooting - an illness from which I suffer quite often. But it is getting better slowly. LOL

This scene had a very high contrast, and I only had a monopod with me. So no chance to do more than 3 exposures. Also, I had to step up the ISO quite heavily. Thus, there was quite some noise in the final tonemapped image. I decided to turn this bug into a feature and cleaned up the noise quite aggressively with different tools. Afterwards I merged the outcome with a charcoal-like version of the image to get more of a painting-like look.

I hope it works for you!

Take a look at my "HDR Cookbook"! It contains some more information on my techniques.

How it was shot:

> Taken with a monopod

> Three exposures (0, -2, +2 ev) autobracketed and merged to get and HDR

> Camera: Nikon D90

> Lens: Sigma 10-20mm F3,5 EX DC HSM

> Details can be found here

How it was tonemapped:

> Preparation: developed the raw files with ACR mainly in order to reduce the CA [details]

> Photomatix version 3.1 (Detail Enhancer)

How it was post-processed:

> Post-processing was done in Photoshop

> Topaz Adjust on the entire image to get back the colors and the details [details]

> Topaz Denoise [details]

> Topaz Clean to clean regions of excessive noise

> Topaz Simplify on a copy of the original image layer to create a charcoal drawing look

> Blended the charcoal drawing layer with the original image to enhance that painting-like look

> Selective masking of the charcoal layer where it did not produce a good look

> Saturaton layer on the golden elements (yellows)

> Levels layer on the ivory (increased brightness)

> Global saturation and levels layer to tune the colors, contrast and brightness

> Vignette effect using a masked fill layer [details]

> Sharpening using the high-pass filter [details]

Even though the world is suffering for COVID and in Switzerland the situation is not very favorable. Somehow; the mountains are still accessible. When it comes to COVID; mountains are probably the safest places as in vast majority of them; you will mostly find yourself alone or with number of people good enough to keep at least 50 meters of social distancing.

Sure, you have to work a bit for that. If you take a cozy cable car; things are not the same. But if you go up walking; you can very much have the path as your backyard.

With several of my trip cancelled; this year I concentrated more in exploring Switzerland. One of my Swiss colleague told me that for the people leaving in Switzerland; exploring Switzerland in holiday is not considered as the exotic holiday to be proud of.

In fact I also realized that in past few years; I was mostly outside Switzerland in holidays. Even thought I used to go out most of the good weather weekends on the mountains.

This year; I found those mountains are probably the safest place to go. So I have explored many locations in Switzerland that are exceptionally beautiful and very much isolated if planned well.

This is one of those places. It snowed heavily few days back. So the mountains are still capped with snow with the last bit of autumn color still remaining.

This is a small lake just above the famous St Moritz. But this is off limit for cars. So I went out early in the dark. Well; I could have probably go 30 minutes later. But I have bad habit of reaching photo locations well in advance. So that I have enough time to setup, grab the right composition before someone else takes it and I am not that fast in setting up. So it is important for me to take the time in a calm way to achieve the best result.

So by habit, I looked around and setup the tripod low and started waiting for the light. The other side started becoming dark orange and the panic started. Am I at the wrong side of the lake? Shall I just run and get to the other side? Even though I like this composition way better; the sky may not be that attractive. At the end I decided not to rush and waited patiently. Some time later the color started coming on this side as well. Time to shoot. The water was calm, the sky was amazing, the tree colors started popping with the increase of light. What else do you want. Got the Nikon at work.

The color stayed max for 3 to 5 minutes before the sky went back to a bit greyish. I also did some video; but being a photographer, the best time is dedicated for photos. So the video off course doesn't have the same color; but was good enough to experience the environment.

Click here to see the short film documenting the beauty of the region as I have experienced it. Please have a look and you may like it.

Stay safe, comply with the authority strictly, stay at home, stop the chain of the virus.

Take care and help the society to recover from the crisis.

Have a nice weekend.

Hope you will enjoy the picture.

According to Venetian official statistics approximately 16 million people visited the province of Venice in 2011, with increases projected for 2012-13. Most if not all visitors, come to visit the central island Venezia in order to see and be in the heart of the city. Geographically the city center which includes St. Mark’s Basilica, St Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge, as well as the homes and businesses of Venetians exists on a land mass that is roughly six square miles. These six square miles are criss-crossed by the Grand and the not-so-grand canals which invite tourists to explore the nooks and crannies of a medieval powerhouse that still displays its heritage.

However, as a frame of reference, visitors should do the math. Public access to the six square miles of the central part of Venice is reduced by the areas occupied by private housing, businesses and by canals. Effectively the 80,000 to 100,000 daily visitors and the 40,000 to 60,000 local residents or business employers and employees are competing for approximately one to two square miles of open space. Regardless of the crowds it should be noted that while tourists may travel stem to stern in seemingly endless lines of gondolas, on Venice’s solid ground no car, bus or motor scooter challenges a visitor’s right to live long and prosper. In Venice the trucks, cars, and buses come with keels and rudders. All vie for space on and in the canals. Gondoliers weave their boats and passengers through the Grand Canal water traffic much like carriage driver guide their clip-clopping horse drawn carriages through any busy city’s tourist center. To paraphrase Shakespeare, in Venice all the water’s a stage,

Despite the increasing adversities encountered getting to White Pocket at Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness I keep going back to this magical place.

Increasing adversities were two cars, which never should attempted getting there and obviously got stuck in the deep sand. An overwhelming amount of people and tents brought in by local guide companies and their guides behaving like this is THEIR place. One of these guides had the nerve to harass me as I was there with two friends of mine, new to White Pocket, and I was showing them around. She thought she could scare me that BLM rangers will penalize me for taking friends to the White Pocket and ‘guiding’ them around. Last but not least, a helicopter showed up in the late afternoon to rescue one of the many people roaming around and who injured herself to the point that she was not able to get back to the car and drive to the closest health care center.

The secret is trying to blend all this out, knowing exactly what you want to shoot and just wait until everybody is gone and use the low light.

There’s something to be said for small cameras and macro photography. The perceived increase in magnification from a micro 4/3rds sensor offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to tiny subjects, like water droplets and their refracted images.

This image was created with a Lumix GX9, still my favourite “small camera”. I spent roughly a year shooting with it exclusively in the past and it never let me down. It’s a perfect travel camera, but the proof is in the pudding: it handles macro work exceptionally well too. Shot with the Laowa 50mm F/2.8 2x macro lens, that’s where things get interesting.

Don’t get me wrong, I am in love with the Leica 45mm F/2.8 macro lens. Incredible sharpness, image stabilization, great autofocus, and no distortion. Sometimes your budget might not extend that far, or you might need higher magnification. The Laowa 50mm 2x macro lens is manual focus only, but you get twice the magnification in a small package – the equivalent of 4x magnification compared to a full-frame camera setup. That puts you into the realm of snowflakes, but also makes it easy to fill the frame with water droplets.

This is a tendril from a cucumber vine. Before planting the seedlings outside, I saw these tendrils and anticipated that they would make a good “ingredient” in a water droplet image; curves and spirals in nature are always a winner. In behind is placed a Gerbera Daisy, carefully positioned such that the yellow center of the flower was directly behind the spiral. Alignment of these ingredients is key.

The water droplets were set in place with a hypodermic needle. The tip of the needle is hydrophobic, meaning that water wants to get away from it and not stick to it. This makes it easy to place water droplets on other surfaces. The more spherical a droplet, the better it acts like a lens, refracting an image of the flower placed behind. You can see that with the bottom droplet well. The “internal” droplet inside the spiral is anything but spherical, so it’s heavily distorted… but it also creates shapes and colours that accent the image nicely.

Learn how to create images like this, and dozens of other subjects in my new book: skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-macro-photography-the-un... - 384 pages hardcover, nearly 90,000 words of instruction and hundreds of images. It’s the best book out there to learn macro photography from (yes, my opinion is obviously biased). There’s an eBook version available as well: skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-ebook-edition-macro-phot...

There’s always more to explore and discover in the universe at our feet. :)

The number of oriental white storks has increased recently. One of them happened to fly all the way from Hyo - go to our town UEDA, NAGANO prefecture about three years ago .

In addition to that, it was the first time in my life that l came across the stork around my neighborhood.

Since then , she has visited and stayed here in UEDA many times .

By the way, it's said that there are more than 100ponds called TAMEIKE in UEDA , especially around the district of SHIODA DAIRA. TAMEIKE means the ponds built for agricultural uses, especially for rice farming . As we've had little precipitation since olden times, most of them had been built by the order of an local FUDAL Lord during the Edo Period about 400years ago .

Each pond has a variety kinds of surroundings with so many different kinds of living things .

Thus she seems to like our town very much , I think.

And a nice, ever increasing clump of Reticulata Iris getting ready to bloom. Look at the stiff little white "beaks"on the tips of the wee shoots! Amazing!! They literally push their way to the surface with that pointy little beak! Nature is sooo cool!

The brothers are racing to the sea, just like any self respecting ninja turtles do in their coming of age :)

Snow all gone and temperatures increasing so this lovely tree will start budding leaves.

As the sky hues deepen, the bird flights increase in both numbers and density. This large night roosting flock appears to comprise only Sandhill Cranes. They eventually covered the entire surface of of this shallow lake accompanied by Snow Geese and other waterfowl.. It's already too dark to count them in this image, but I estimate the Cranes here already comprise several hundred birds... and there will be more! I believe that at least half the birds passing overhead at this time are still flying after it has become way too dark for photography. They must have exceptional night-time vision!
