Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.
History
The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.
System
Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.
The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.
The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.

With the aging of the Grumman S-2 Tracker and the increasing effectiveness of Soviet submarines, the US Navy issued a requirement for a new carrier-based ASW aircraft. Lockheed won the contract, partnering with LTV to design carrier-specific equipment and Univac to design the ASW suite. The resulting S-3A Viking first flew in January 1972 and entered the fleet in February 1974.
While the S-2 had integrated the hunter-killer team concept into a single airframe, the S-3 went one step further by completely computerizing the sub-hunting process, integrating the entire sensor suite into one system. Flown by a crew of four, the S-3’s interior was so efficient that one aviation writer described it as the most compactly designed aircraft in history. The S-3A acquired a reputation for being a reliable, easy to fly aircraft, and spawned a number of variants, including the US-3A carrier-onboard delivery (COD) transport aircraft and the ES-3A Shadow Elint variant. A dedicated KS-3A tanker never went into production, but S-3s were increasingly equipped with buddy refuelling packs. When the KA-6D Intruder dedicated tanker was retired from the US Navy in the mid-1990s, the S-3 took over the role, though its relatively slow speed meant it could not accompany strikes into enemy territory.
Despite that, the S-3 has always had the capability to carry not only antisubmarine ordnance such as torpedoes and depth charges, but also bombs and later the AGM-84 Harpoon antiship missile and AGM-65 Maverick AGM. The S-3’s antiship capability was used in both Gulf Wars: in 1991, a S-3 sank an Iraqi attack boat with conventional bombs, while in 2003 a S-3 destroyed an Iraqi command post with a Maverick in Basra.
Beginning in 1991, the S-3As in service were modified to S-3B standard, with upgraded avionics and a new synthetic-aperature radar, giving the S-3B a significant ship-detection and SAR capability as well. Though the ES-3A was withdrawn from service in the mid-1990s, several S-3Bs were converted to littorial reconnaissance (Gray Wolf) and ground surveillance (Brown Boy) roles. With the reduction of submarine threats to the US Navy, the S-3 fleet was gradually retired; today, only a handful remain with Navy testing units.
This model represents a S-3A assigned to VS-38 ("Red Griffins") aboard the USS Ranger in the late 1980s. It is configured for the antishipping role, with an AGM-84 Harpoon on the port wing and three LAU-3 rocket pods on the starboard. The subdued overall gray camouflage had been adopted fleetwide by this time, making gaudy squadron colors a thing of the past. It is also displayed with the MAD boom extended.

Cordycep sinensis is a type of fungus native to the Himalayan Mountains. Native to Tibet, Nepal, and Northern India regions their natural habitat is at high altitudes typically between 10,000ft and 14,000ft. While, there are hundreds of different species of cordyceps the most potent and sought after species is Sinensis. It has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine for centuries dating back almost 1,500 years and is currently classified as an herbal Adaptogen. Adaptogens are a special class of plants recognized for their unique healing qualities. Early Tibetan herdsmen observed that their Yaks became more energetic after consuming the fungus and for centuries traders who routinely traveled the Himalayan region also used Cordycep sinensis to stay more alert and energetic at high altitudes. Highly prized in China they were known to trade their weight in gold or silver.
Rhodiola rosea also known as Golden Root, Roseroot and Aaron's Rod is a wild flower with a natural habitat in cold regions and high altitudes typically around 7,500ft. The areas where it can be found naturally are; Arctic, mountains of Central Asia, Rocky Mountains, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Europe particularly the Alps and Pyrenees. It has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, also known as hóng jǐng tiān, and is currently classified as an Adaptogen. Adaptogens are a special class of plants recognized for their unique healing qualities. It has also been used extensively in Scandinavia and Russia to help cope with extreme climates and altitudes.
Ginkgo biloba is a living fossil millions of years old, for centuries it was thought to be extinct, but was found in two small areas in Zhejiang province in Eastern China. It is believed that these trees survived because Chinese monks cultivated them for thousands of years. It has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is also known as ái guǒ ('white fruit') or yínxìng (silver apricot). In Europe it is widely used for treating dementia because of its ability to improve blood flow to the brain. Laboratory studies have shown that ginkgo improves blood circulation by dilating blood vessels and reducing the stickiness of blood platelets.

4000 Invisible and left out pioneers who helped to build this Country ? These legitimate Seniors do not deserve this ill treatment from the Liberals .
the Rapid Response Rhetoric ? Nov 17th, 2022, Canada House of Commons Question Period, the Minister of Seniors was asked about her Senior citizens and we sincerely hope to have interpreted the broken English correctly,
Kamel K. - "We have permanently increased OAS for Seniors over the,, etc, etc,, "
Excuse me ? The M P is asking about help for Seniors - that's Seniors with an s - This means all Canadians age 65 and up ? Why does the Minister's rapid rhetoric response answer refer only to those Seniors over the age of 75 and leave out the majority or 57% of Seniors that are aged 65 to 74 who will get absolutely nothing from the benefit she boasts about ? It can be hurtful when those in power insinuates or makes it sound like you are getting something when the truth is you aren't getting anything ? Liberals must stop the pretending and quit making it sound in their speeches as if the 10% raise is universal to all Seniors and admit that to put forth any such ridiculous notion is false and misleading being that the majority of Seniors get absolutely nothing from the new 10 % raise that they continually boast about ? Liberal Politicians have been doing this for over 2 years now as the raise is held back from release ? It can be discouraging to witness so many Senior citizens being misrepresented in comments, speeches and responses implying that the 10% raise in old age pension is an umbrella benefit covering all Seniors. This is an absolutely false presumption to give out ? Some of the comments even give out a false impression that the raise in OAS was already being used and enjoyed by Seniors when in fact it hadn't even been released yet, and still hasn't been released at the time of this writing, and if it is ever released it will only benefit 43% of Seniors ?
Kamel K. - "800 dollars for a full pensioner" -
'a full pensioner' I don't know what country she came from, but we don't have that here ? Does this mean Seniors aged 65 thru 74 are now to be called half pensioners ?
Kamel K. - " we are doubling the GST Credit " -
What ? I wish it were true but this rapid rhetoric response is absolutely false - they have only doubled 2 of the regular 4 payments always given each year for this 1 time only and no more ? This tricky slip-o-the-tongue and sayitfast reference occurs far too often ? They also fail to remember that GST is a universal benefit and not just something for Seniors only ? All Canadians who qualify get this benefit and will receive it so why make it sound like it is specifically designed just for a Seniors benefit only ?
Kamel K. - "provided dental care" -
Where is it ? FYI update May 2024 - It's here. Liberals have launched their new dental care program..
Kamel K. - " provide a 500 dollar rental assist "
Unfortunately, you'd have to be living in a car, (and some Seniors are) to qualify for this 1 time only emergency 500.00 rental crisis benefit ? The allowable max earnings is set so low that the number of qualifiers will be lminimal ? (20 G max net annually ). When doing taxes for my Grandson who happens to work full time at Walmart, we were disappointed when he failed to overcome the almost impossible maximum income allowed guidelines set by the Government ? His minimum wage earnings were classed as too high to meet the salary limitations demanded ? Unfortunately, most needy renters, and minimum wage workers. the handicapped, low and fixed income Seniors are disqualified because they make too much money ? It's difficult to comprehend how a Senior citizen who must live 12 months on a pension, or a working person who must work an entire 12 month year in return for what it recently cost for the PM to rent a room in London for 4 nights can be deemed as making too much money for crisis rental assistance ? Some Apartment rentals for Seniors in Halifax have doubled in the last 4 years ( a 1 bedroom at 750. oo has risen up to 2000. oo ) .
This one time only, band aide solution has set such extremely low allowable yearly earning conditions along with so much red tape that only the fewest of the few could ever possibly qualify providing they can show adequate proof from their employer, landlord etc etc. ? And homeowners with mortgages are left out of this ? And so for a 'rental emergency' plan in a crisis this plan seems to be inadequatel, as well as, miserly, stingy and an insult to anyone desperately needing some help now ? Being that the assistance is only for the very few who qualify, it seems by the thought process that has gone into this and by the benefit they have come up with, that rather than provide real help for desperate renters who are trapped in a housing crisis, that it seems more likely that such a very meek and miserly benefit must have been designed purely to help the Liberal politicians themselves by providing a convenient rapid response answer to use whenever asked what they are doing about the current serious rental crisis in Canada ?
Canada Workers Benefit- And it would be remiss not to mention that my minimum wage full time working Grandson has also been penalized by the same, 'making too much money syndrome', to successfully qualify for CWB (aka Canada Workers Benefit) entitlement because his minimum wage working salary at Walmart is considered to be too much to overcome the strict limitations and restrictions placed on this Benefit ?
FYI Update July 2023 - New changes in CWB brought in this year will now allow my minimum wage Grandson to receive some CWB,, tyvm
Kamel K. - "we continue to deliver for Seniors" -
Seniors ? Did you say Seniors with an 's' ,, as in, 'all' seniors ? Not so much for the over 4 million of the total Canadian senior population aged 65 thru 74 that have been left out, misrepresented, segregated and discriminated against ? And, it can be hurtful when someone in power and Authority claims or makes it seem like you are getting something when you really aren't getting anything ?
And as for the 'deliver' part,, the Government has surely established a guiness record for a 'slow delivery' or the time it takes to 'deliver' after first promising Seniors a 10% raise in OAS to begin in July 2020 and then making them wait a full 2 years of extra time until the end of July 2022 for the first ever delivery some 2 years late ? And the 25% raise in Widows Survivors benefits promised at the same time 3 year ago still hasn't ever been delivered ?
Why are Senior citizens being penalized for noble attributes like many years and years of work and paying taxes, as well as, marital status ?
The Liberals are making cost cutting measures to Seniors benefits by using segregation ? They have excluded and eliminated many needy Seniors from assistance during trying times ? Be it the one Senior only per household GST benefit rule or any Seniors benefit that they tie in with the GST that means the benefit can only go to one Senior per household ? There was also the controversial 10 % raise in Senior's OAS that excluded 4000 Senior citizens, or, the 2021 one time 500.oo emergency Covi payment that also excluded 4000 needy Seniors from the money during a historic pandemic, or, The 3 consecutive Federal Budgets that kept re-using the same 10% raise in OAS over and over again, or, the nine billion dollar Affordability Plan that overlooked 4000 Seniors, and there was also the Nov. 2022 Fall mini budget that forgot all about Senior citizens, and the 1 time only renters assistance that was so hard to qualify for that you'd have to be living in your car for approval, and then there was also the 226.00 grocery benefit that was attached to the GST so that only one Senior in the same household could get it, just to name a few ?
In order to receive the one time Covi 500.oo Seniors assistance benefit given in 2021 the Senior must be over age 75 ? Surely Each and every Senior citizen out there deserves this emergency benefit during the worst ever National health crisis in history ? Why would over 4000 Canadian Seniors aged 65 thru 74 be excluded from this crucial one time health crisis emergency benefit during a pandemic ? And why do they act in the media as if this benefit is given out to all of the Seniors ? How could anyone implement cost cutting measures to save money on the backs of elderly citizens who are currently absorbing 75 % of all Covi deaths ? This is genocide and a shameful National disgrace ?
,
A double penalty ?
It seems that many spouses of Senior citizens who were homemakers and raised children are now excluded from both the CPP, and from their own individual GST rebate check likr everyone else because of current 1 single GST rebate per household rule ? And so, many Seniors currently live well below the minimum livable poverty line ? Why in the world would a Senior citizen be downplayed and penalized for being married, a Mother and a homemaker ?
giving Seniors 225 for groceries ?
April 3, 2023 - Liberals say that to make life more affordable during a food crisis, their budget 2023 delivers a new grocery rebate offering food inflation relief for 11 million low or modest income Canadians and families who need it most.
They have announced that their one time only grocery rebate will give up to $467 to eligible couples with children; and $234 for a single Canadians without children; and (the lowest amount being offered) ,, $225 for Seniors,
.But don't Grannies need groceries too ?
The Liberal announcement of an urgent grocery rebate to be given as help in a food crisis makes it appear as though the amount of $225 is given to Seniors ? In fact this benefit will be handled similar to the way the GST is administered and therefore like the GST, it can only be given to 1 of the 2 partnered seniors living under the same roof ? This means that the so called 225 Seniors grocery rebate payment can only be issued to 1 of the 2 Seniors (similar to the GST), or the 2 individual Seniors could split the check between them at 112.50 each ? This cuts the real and true Seniors grocery benefit down to 1/2 of the amount they like to make it sound in their ads that the Seniors are getting ? And this makes these Seniors by far the least rewarded of any person receiving this desperately needed Government assistance ?

The Pakistan Strategy Support Program (PSSP) held the conference, “Increasing Productivity and Unleashing Growth” at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad on May 26-27th, 2012. This conference also marked the final round of the Competitive Grants Program that was launched by PSSP in January 2012 for Pakistani PhD and graduate students studying locally and abroad on economic development issues of Pakistan. The finalists presented in front of the Research Advisory Committee, donor heads, professors and students from local universities. The event also consisted of plenary sessions on Pakistan’s various economic growth issues by renowned academics from all over the world, such as Dr. Jock Anderson, Dr. Regina Birner and Dr. David Spielman.
Today, there is greater recognition by the public and the aviation community of the hazards posed by birds and other wildlife to aviation safety. In the first six months following the “Miracle on the Hudson” (Flight 1549’s emergency landing), the number of reported wildlife strikes jumped by 24 percent likely due to an increased awareness following the highly publicized event. In 2008, 7,516 strikes were reported. By 2018, annual reporting levels had reached around 11,000-13,000 strikes. This rise is likely due to several factors, including expanding wildlife populations, more aircraft in the air, and an increased awareness of the need to report both damaging and non-damaging strikes. Increased reporting has helped experts define and reduce the risk of wildlife-aircraft collisions. Air travel remains a safe mode of transportation. Only one out of every 1.2 million flights results in an accident. Reports show that damaging strikes have decreased, although the total number of reported strikes has increased.

"USS Massachusetts (BB-59) is the third of four South Dakota-class fast battleships built for the United States Navy in the late 1930s. The first American battleships designed after the Washington treaty system began to break down in the mid-1930s, they took advantage of an escalator clause that allowed increasing the main battery to 16-inch (406 mm) guns, but refusal to authorize larger battleships kept their displacement close to the Washington limit of 35,000 long tons (36,000 t). A requirement to be armored against the same caliber of guns as they carried, combined with the displacement restriction, resulted in cramped ships, a problem that was exacerbated by wartime modifications that considerably strengthened their anti-aircraft batteries and significantly increased their crews.
On completion, Massachusetts was sent to support Operation Torch, the invasion of French North Africa, in November 1942. There, she engaged in an artillery duel with the incomplete French battleship Jean Bart and neutralized her. Massachusetts thereafter transferred to the Pacific War for operations against Japan; she spent the war primarily as an escort for the fast carrier task force to protect the aircraft carriers from surface and air attacks. In this capacity, she took part in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign in 1943 and early 1944 and the Philippines campaign in late 1944 and early 1945. Later in 1945, the ship supported Allied forces during the Battle of Okinawa and thereafter participated in attacks on Japan, including bombarding industrial targets on Honshu in July and August.
After the war, Massachusetts returned to the United States and was decommissioned and assigned to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Norfolk in 1947. She remained out of service until 1962, when she was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register. Three years later, she was transferred to the Massachusetts Memorial Committee and preserved as a museum ship at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts. Some material was removed in the 1980s to reactivate the Iowa-class battleships, but the ship otherwise remains in her wartime configuration.
Fall River is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. The City of Fall River's population was 94,000 at the 2020 United States Census, making it the tenth-largest city in the state.
Located along the eastern shore of Mount Hope Bay at the mouth of the Taunton River, the city became famous during the 19th century as the leading textile manufacturing center in the United States. While the textile industry has long since moved on, its impact on the city's culture and landscape is still prominent. Fall River's official motto is "We'll Try", dating back to the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1843. Nicknamed The Scholarship City after Irving Fradkin founded Dollars for Scholars there in 1958, mayor Jasiel Correia introduced the "Make It Here" slogan as part of a citywide rebranding effort in 2017.
Fall River is known for the Lizzie Borden case, the Fall River cult murders, Portuguese culture, its numerous 19th-century textile mills and Battleship Cove, home of the world's largest collection of World War II naval vessels (including the battleship USS Massachusetts). Fall River has its city hall located over an interstate highway." - info from Wikipedia.
The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

Faisalabad, March 19 – American scientists and Pakistani wheat experts are collaborating to increase Pakistan’s wheat harvest and ensure greater prosperity to farmers nationwide. A bi-national team of scientists, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), met in Faisalabad last week to evaluate wheat varieties for disease-resistance. In order to determine which wheat varieties will perform best in Pakistan’s unique ecosystem, U.S. and Pakistani researchers studied the effects of heat and other types of environmental stress on the different varieties of wheat that can be planted in Pakistan.
USDA, through its Wheat Productivity Enhancement Project (WPEP), currently helps evaluate 60 wheat varieties planted in 115 wheat trials throughout Pakistan. In order to increase the quality of this joint research, last week USDA also provided Pakistani research institutions specialized wheat planting and harvesting equipment. The new machines, which replaced equipment over 25 years old, will allow scientists to study more wheat varieties each year and more rapidly improve Pakistani farmers’ harvest yields.
“Wheat is critical to the food security of both Pakistan and the United States,” said USDA Plant Health Advisor Ian Winborne after a ceremony at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) celebrating the handover of the new equipment. He added, “Lasting links between Pakistani and U.S. scientists can help improve and protect agricultural harvests in both our countries.”
WPEP facilitates scientific collaboration between USDA, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), and Pakistan’s national wheat programs. WPEP funds scientific exchanges to develop, introduce, and test disease-resistant wheat varieties; improve agronomic practices; and upgrade research capacity in Pakistan.
This initiative is just one part of a comprehensive U.S. economic growth assistance program which includes expanding irrigation by more than 200,000 acres near the Gomal Zam and Satpara dams; constructing more than 1,000 km of roads to connect communities and facilitate trade; modernizing dairy farms in Punjab; and launching private equity investment funds to help small and medium businesses grow.

The astronaut transfer van, known as the Astrovan during the Space Shuttle era, was a NASA vehicle used at the Kennedy Space Center to transport astronauts from the Operations and Checkout Building to the launch pad before a mission and for launch dress rehearsals, and back to the Operations and Checkout Building following a shuttle landing.
According to driver Ronnie King, the early shuttle astronauts liked the history-filled vehicle, even if it was somewhat old, and even argued against upgrading the vehicle. "We were staged to get a new one," King said, and added that word came that the rookie astronauts wanted to keep the vehicle that was a tradition of the astronauts who traveled those nine miles to the pad before them.
During the twenty-minute drive to the launch pad for shuttle launches, the Astrovan usually stopped at least once along the way. An astronaut rode with the crew and was let off near the Vehicle Assembly Building to board the Shuttle Training Aircraft and assess local weather conditions. Senior NASA managers occasionally rode along as well, and were dropped off at the Launch Control Center.
During Project Mercury a modified semi truck and trailer was used to transport astronauts to the launch pads LC-5 and LC-14.
During Project Gemini a fleet of converted delivery vans were used to transport astronauts to the launch pad LC-19.
A modified Clark-Cortez motorhome was used to transport Apollo-era crews to the launch pad, beginning with Apollo 7 in 1967 and continuing through the Apollo–Soyuz launch in 1975. This vehicle remained in use through STS-6, and is now on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's Apollo/Saturn V Center.
An Itasca Suncruiser M-22RB was used to transport the STS-7 and STS-8 astronauts to the launch pad, as the size of shuttle crews had increased.
A modified 1983 Airstream Excella motorhome, popularly known as the Astrovan, was used from STS-9 through the final Space Shuttle mission (STS-135), and is also on display at the KSC Visitor Center.
On October 21, 2019, the Boeing Company and Airstream announced Astrovan II, a modified Airstream Atlas (with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis) touring coach to carry Boeing commercial crew astronauts to the launch pad where they will board the CST-100 Starliner on their way to the International Space Station. Astrovan II has seating for up to eight (including the driver), and was built at Airstream's Jackson Center, Ohio production facility.
SpaceX does not use a van to transport astronauts for the SpaceX Dragon 2 missions, instead using a set of specially made Tesla Model X cars.
On April 13, 2022, NASA announced that Canoo Technologies Inc would build three new crew transportation vehicles designed to take the fully suited astronauts, their support team, and their equipment on the nine-mile stretch of road from the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building to the launch pad for the Artemis program.
In Russia and China cosmonauts and taikonauts have always relied on a bus to take them to the Launch Pad.
The John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC, originally known as the NASA Launch Operations Center), located on Merritt Island, Florida, is one of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) ten field centers. Since December 1968, KSC has been NASA's primary launch center of American spaceflight, research, and technology. Launch operations for the Apollo, Skylab and Space Shuttle programs were carried out from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39 and managed by KSC. Located on the east coast of Florida, KSC is adjacent to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS). The management of the two entities work very closely together, share resources and operate facilities on each other's property.
Though the first Apollo flights and all Project Mercury and Project Gemini flights took off from the then-Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the launches were managed by KSC and its previous organization, the Launch Operations Directorate. Starting with the fourth Gemini mission, the NASA launch control center in Florida (Mercury Control Center, later the Launch Control Center) began handing off control of the vehicle to the Mission Control Center in Houston, shortly after liftoff; in prior missions it held control throughout the entire mission.
Additionally, the center manages launch of robotic and commercial crew missions and researches food production and in-situ resource utilization for off-Earth exploration. Since 2010, the center has worked to become a multi-user spaceport through industry partnerships, even adding a new launch pad (LC-39C) in 2015.
There are about 700 facilities and buildings grouped throughout the center's 144,000 acres (580 km2). Among the unique facilities at KSC are the 525-foot (160 m) tall Vehicle Assembly Building for stacking NASA's largest rockets, the Launch Control Center, which conducts space launches at KSC, the Operations and Checkout Building, which houses the astronauts dormitories and suit-up area, a Space Station factory, and a 3-mile (4.8 km) long Shuttle Landing Facility. There is also a Visitor Complex on site that is open to the public.
Since 1949, the military had been performing launch operations at what would become Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. In December 1959, the Department of Defense transferred 5,000 personnel and the Missile Firing Laboratory to NASA to become the Launch Operations Directorate under NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.
President John F. Kennedy's 1961 goal of a crewed lunar landing by 1970 required an expansion of launch operations. On July 1, 1962, the Launch Operations Directorate was separated from MSFC to become the Launch Operations Center (LOC). Also, Cape Canaveral was inadequate to host the new launch facility design required for the mammoth 363-foot (111 m) tall, 7,500,000-pound-force (33,000 kN) thrust Saturn V rocket, which would be assembled vertically in a large hangar and transported on a mobile platform to one of several launch pads. Therefore, the decision was made to build a new LOC site located adjacent to Cape Canaveral on Merritt Island.
NASA began land acquisition in 1962, buying title to 131 square miles (340 km2) and negotiating with the state of Florida for an additional 87 square miles (230 km2). The major buildings in KSC's Industrial Area were designed by architect Charles Luckman. Construction began in November 1962, and Kennedy visited the site twice in 1962, and again just a week before his assassination on November 22, 1963.
On November 29, 1963, the facility was named by President Lyndon B. Johnson under Executive Order 11129. Johnson's order joined both the civilian LOC and the military Cape Canaveral station ("the facilities of Station No. 1 of the Atlantic Missile Range") under the designation "John F. Kennedy Space Center", spawning some confusion joining the two in the public mind. NASA Administrator James E. Webb clarified this by issuing a directive stating the Kennedy Space Center name applied only to the LOC, while the Air Force issued a general order renaming the military launch site Cape Kennedy Air Force Station.
Located on Merritt Island, Florida, the center is north-northwest of Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Ocean, midway between Miami and Jacksonville on Florida's Space Coast, due east of Orlando. It is 34 miles (55 km) long and roughly six miles (9.7 km) wide, covering 219 square miles (570 km2). KSC is a major central Florida tourist destination and is approximately one hour's drive from the Orlando area. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex offers public tours of the center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
From 1967 through 1973, there were 13 Saturn V launches, including the ten remaining Apollo missions after Apollo 7. The first of two uncrewed flights, Apollo 4 (Apollo-Saturn 501) on November 9, 1967, was also the first rocket launch from KSC. The Saturn V's first crewed launch on December 21, 1968, was Apollo 8's lunar orbiting mission. The next two missions tested the Lunar Module: Apollo 9 (Earth orbit) and Apollo 10 (lunar orbit). Apollo 11, launched from Pad A on July 16, 1969, made the first Moon landing on July 20. The Apollo 11 launch included crewmembers Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin, and attracted a record-breaking 650 million television viewers. Apollo 12 followed four months later. From 1970 to 1972, the Apollo program concluded at KSC with the launches of missions 13 through 17.
On May 14, 1973, the last Saturn V launch put the Skylab space station in orbit from Pad 39A. By this time, the Cape Kennedy pads 34 and 37 used for the Saturn IB were decommissioned, so Pad 39B was modified to accommodate the Saturn IB, and used to launch three crewed missions to Skylab that year, as well as the final Apollo spacecraft for the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in 1975.
As the Space Shuttle was being designed, NASA received proposals for building alternative launch-and-landing sites at locations other than KSC, which demanded study. KSC had important advantages, including its existing facilities; location on the Intracoastal Waterway; and its southern latitude, which gives a velocity advantage to missions launched in easterly near-equatorial orbits. Disadvantages included: its inability to safely launch military missions into polar orbit, since spent boosters would be likely to fall on the Carolinas or Cuba; corrosion from the salt air; and frequent cloudy or stormy weather. Although building a new site at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico was seriously considered, NASA announced its decision in April 1972 to use KSC for the shuttle. Since the Shuttle could not be landed automatically or by remote control, the launch of Columbia on April 12, 1981 for its first orbital mission STS-1, was NASA's first crewed launch of a vehicle that had not been tested in prior uncrewed launches.
In 1976, the VAB's south parking area was the site of Third Century America, a science and technology display commemorating the U.S. Bicentennial. Concurrent with this event, the U.S. flag was painted on the south side of the VAB. During the late 1970s, LC-39 was reconfigured to support the Space Shuttle. Two Orbiter Processing Facilities were built near the VAB as hangars with a third added in the 1980s.
KSC's 2.9-mile (4.7 km) Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) was the orbiters' primary end-of-mission landing site, although the first KSC landing did not take place until the tenth flight, when Challenger completed STS-41-B on February 11, 1984; the primary landing site until then was Edwards Air Force Base in California, subsequently used as a backup landing site. The SLF also provided a return-to-launch-site (RTLS) abort option, which was not utilized. The SLF is among the longest runways in the world.
On October 28, 2009, the Ares I-X launch from Pad 39B was the first uncrewed launch from KSC since the Skylab workshop in 1973.
Beginning in 1958, NASA and military worked side by side on robotic mission launches (previously referred to as unmanned), cooperating as they broke ground in the field. In the early 1960s, NASA had as many as two robotic mission launches a month. The frequent number of flights allowed for quick evolution of the vehicles, as engineers gathered data, learned from anomalies and implemented upgrades. In 1963, with the intent of KSC ELV work focusing on the ground support equipment and facilities, a separate Atlas/Centaur organization was formed under NASA's Lewis Center (now Glenn Research Center (GRC)), taking that responsibility from the Launch Operations Center (aka KSC).
Though almost all robotics missions launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS), KSC "oversaw the final assembly and testing of rockets as they arrived at the Cape." In 1965, KSC's Unmanned Launch Operations directorate became responsible for all NASA uncrewed launch operations, including those at Vandenberg Space Force Base. From the 1950s to 1978, KSC chose the rocket and payload processing facilities for all robotic missions launching in the U.S., overseeing their near launch processing and checkout. In addition to government missions, KSC performed this service for commercial and foreign missions also, though non-U.S. government entities provided reimbursement. NASA also funded Cape Canaveral Space Force Station launch pad maintenance and launch vehicle improvements.
All this changed with the Commercial Space Launch Act of 1984, after which NASA only coordinated its own and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ELV launches. Companies were able to "operate their own launch vehicles" and utilize NASA's launch facilities. Payload processing handled by private firms also started to occur outside of KSC. Reagan's 1988 space policy furthered the movement of this work from KSC to commercial companies. That same year, launch complexes on Cape Canaveral Air Force Force Station started transferring from NASA to Air Force Space Command management.
In the 1990s, though KSC was not performing the hands-on ELV work, engineers still maintained an understanding of ELVs and had contracts allowing them insight into the vehicles so they could provide knowledgeable oversight. KSC also worked on ELV research and analysis and the contractors were able to utilize KSC personnel as a resource for technical issues. KSC, with the payload and launch vehicle industries, developed advances in automation of the ELV launch and ground operations to enable competitiveness of U.S. rockets against the global market.
In 1998, the Launch Services Program (LSP) formed at KSC, pulling together programs (and personnel) that already existed at KSC, GRC, Goddard Space Flight Center, and more to manage the launch of NASA and NOAA robotic missions. Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and VAFB are the primary launch sites for LSP missions, though other sites are occasionally used. LSP payloads such as the Mars Science Laboratory have been processed at KSC before being transferred to a launch pad on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
On 16 November 2022, at 06:47:44 UTC the Space Launch System (SLS) was launched from Complex 39B as part of the Artemis 1 mission.
As the International Space Station modules design began in the early 1990s, KSC began to work with other NASA centers and international partners to prepare for processing before launch onboard the Space Shuttles. KSC utilized its hands-on experience processing the 22 Spacelab missions in the Operations and Checkout Building to gather expectations of ISS processing. These experiences were incorporated into the design of the Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF), which began construction in 1991. The Space Station Directorate formed in 1996. KSC personnel were embedded at station module factories for insight into their processes.
From 1997 to 2007, KSC planned and performed on the ground integration tests and checkouts of station modules: three Multi-Element Integration Testing (MEIT) sessions and the Integration Systems Test (IST). Numerous issues were found and corrected that would have been difficult to nearly impossible to do on-orbit.
Today KSC continues to process ISS payloads from across the world before launch along with developing its experiments for on orbit. The proposed Lunar Gateway would be manufactured and processed at the Space Station Processing Facility.
The following are current programs and initiatives at Kennedy Space Center:

The KSC Industrial Area, where many of the center's support facilities are located, is 5 miles (8 km) south of LC-39. It includes the Headquarters Building, the Operations and Checkout Building and the Central Instrumentation Facility. The astronaut crew quarters are in the O&C; before it was completed, the astronaut crew quarters were located in Hangar S at the Cape Canaveral Missile Test Annex (now Cape Canaveral Space Force Station). Located at KSC was the Merritt Island Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network station (MILA), a key radio communications and spacecraft tracking complex.
Facilities at the Kennedy Space Center are directly related to its mission to launch and recover missions. Facilities are available to prepare and maintain spacecraft and payloads for flight. The Headquarters (HQ) Building houses offices for the Center Director, library, film and photo archives, a print shop and security. When the KSC Library first opened, it was part of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency. However, in 1965, the library moved into three separate sections in the newly opened NASA headquarters before eventually becoming a single unit in 1970. The library contains over four million items related to the history and the work at Kennedy. As one of ten NASA center libraries in the country, their collection focuses on engineering, science, and technology. The archives contain planning documents, film reels, and original photographs covering the history of KSC. The library is not open to the public but is available for KSC, Space Force, and Navy employees who work on site. Many of the media items from the collection are digitized and available through NASA's KSC Media Gallery Archived December 6, 2020, at the Wayback Machine or through their more up-to-date Flickr gallery.
A new Headquarters Building was completed in 2019 as part of the Central Campus consolidation. Groundbreaking began in 2014.
The center operated its own 17-mile (27 km) short-line railroad. This operation was discontinued in 2015, with the sale of its final two locomotives. A third had already been donated to a museum. The line was costing $1.3 million annually to maintain.
The Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building (O&C) (previously known as the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building) is a historic site on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places dating back to the 1960s and was used to receive, process, and integrate payloads for the Gemini and Apollo programs, the Skylab program in the 1970s, and for initial segments of the International Space Station through the 1990s. The Apollo and Space Shuttle astronauts would board the astronaut transfer van to launch complex 39 from the O&C building.
The three-story, 457,000-square-foot (42,500 m2) Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF) consists of two enormous processing bays, an airlock, operational control rooms, laboratories, logistics areas and office space for support of non-hazardous Space Station and Shuttle payloads to ISO 14644-1 class 5 standards. Opened in 1994, it is the largest factory building in the KSC industrial area.
The Vertical Processing Facility (VPF) features a 71-by-38-foot (22 by 12 m) door where payloads that are processed in the vertical position are brought in and manipulated with two overhead cranes and a hoist capable of lifting up to 35 short tons (32 t).
The Hypergolic Maintenance and Checkout Area (HMCA) comprises three buildings that are isolated from the rest of the industrial area because of the hazardous materials handled there. Hypergolic-fueled modules that made up the Space Shuttle Orbiter's reaction control system, orbital maneuvering system and auxiliary power units were stored and serviced in the HMCF.
The Multi-Payload Processing Facility is a 19,647 square feet (1,825.3 m2) building used for Orion spacecraft and payload processing.
The Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility (PHSF) contains a 70-by-110-foot (21 by 34 m) service bay, with a 100,000-pound (45,000 kg), 85-foot (26 m) hook height. It also contains a 58-by-80-foot (18 by 24 m) payload airlock. Its temperature is maintained at 70 °F (21 °C).[55]
The Blue Origin rocket manufacturing facility is located immediately south of the KSC visitor complex. Completed in 2019, it serves as the company's factory for the manufacture of New Glenn orbital rockets.
Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) was originally built for the Saturn V, the largest and most powerful operational launch vehicle until the Space Launch System, for the Apollo crewed Moon landing program. Since the end of the Apollo program in 1972, LC-39 has been used to launch every NASA human space flight, including Skylab (1973), the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (1975), and the Space Shuttle program (1981–2011).
Since December 1968, all launch operations have been conducted from launch pads A and B at LC-39. Both pads are on the ocean, 3 miles (4.8 km) east of the VAB. From 1969 to 1972, LC-39 was the "Moonport" for all six Apollo crewed Moon landing missions using the Saturn V, and was used from 1981 to 2011 for all Space Shuttle launches.
Human missions to the Moon required the large three-stage Saturn V rocket, which was 363 feet (111 meters) tall and 33 feet (10 meters) in diameter. At KSC, Launch Complex 39 was built on Merritt Island to accommodate the new rocket. Construction of the $800 million project began in November 1962. LC-39 pads A and B were completed by October 1965 (planned Pads C, D and E were canceled), the VAB was completed in June 1965, and the infrastructure by late 1966.
The complex includes: the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), a 130,000,000 cubic feet (3,700,000 m3) hangar capable of holding four Saturn Vs. The VAB was the largest structure in the world by volume when completed in 1965.
a transporter capable of carrying 5,440 tons along a crawlerway to either of two launch pads;
a 446-foot (136 m) mobile service structure, with three Mobile Launcher Platforms, each containing a fixed launch umbilical tower;
the Launch Control Center; and
a news media facility.
Launch Complex 48 (LC-48) is a multi-user launch site under construction for small launchers and spacecraft. It will be located between Launch Complex 39A and Space Launch Complex 41, with LC-39A to the north and SLC-41 to the south. LC-48 will be constructed as a "clean pad" to support multiple launch systems with differing propellant needs. While initially only planned to have a single pad, the complex is capable of being expanded to two at a later date.
As a part of promoting commercial space industry growth in the area and the overall center as a multi-user spaceport, KSC leases some of its properties. Here are some major examples:
Exploration Park to multiple users (partnership with Space Florida)
Shuttle Landing Facility to Space Florida (who contracts use to private companies)
Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF)-3 to Boeing (for CST-100 Starliner)
Launch Complex 39A, Launch Control Center Firing Room 4 and land for SpaceX's Roberts Road facility (Hanger X) to SpaceX
O&C High Bay to Lockheed Martin (for Orion processing)
Land for FPL's Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center to Florida Power and Light (FPL)
Hypergolic Maintenance Facility (HMF) to United Paradyne Corporation (UPC)
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, operated by Delaware North since 1995, has a variety of exhibits, artifacts, displays and attractions on the history and future of human and robotic spaceflight. Bus tours of KSC originate from here. The complex also includes the separate Apollo/Saturn V Center, north of the VAB and the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, six miles west near Titusville. There were 1.5 million visitors in 2009. It had some 700 employees.
It was announced on May 29, 2015, that the Astronaut Hall of Fame exhibit would be moved from its current location to another location within the Visitor Complex to make room for an upcoming high-tech attraction entitled "Heroes and Legends". The attraction, designed by Orlando-based design firm Falcon's Treehouse, opened November 11, 2016.
In March 2016, the visitor center unveiled the new location of the iconic countdown clock at the complex's entrance; previously, the clock was located with a flagpole at the press site. The clock was originally built and installed in 1969 and listed with the flagpole in the National Register of Historic Places in January 2000. In 2019, NASA celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo program, and the launch of Apollo 10 on May 18. Amy Jenkins (College of Human and Health Sciences)
This is Rene. She had just announced with immense pride that she was holding her great grandson. The happiness she was experiencing at this moment is unmistakeable but within 15 minutes she did not remember holding him.
Dementia can impair cognitive functioning due to neurodegeneration in areas of the brain such as the hippocampus. The forgetting of visits can cause loved ones to reduce contact time as it can be perceived a pointless exercise, thus increasing loneliness and feelings of isolation. Despite lapses in memory, the feelings associated with such memories often remain due to the more dementia resilient area of the brain called the amygdala.
Rene was 96 years old and passed away 3 days after this photograph was taken. The transfer of scientific knowledge into clinical practice and public knowledge is imperative because despite having impaired cognitive functioning, Rene certainly remained happy and content until the end.

This is a photograph from the 3rd annual running of the Trim AC 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 5th February 2017 at 12:00. The race attracted over 1,200 participants which shows a 100% increase on last year's participation. The event shows growth year on year mirroring the growing popularity of the race. The race started on the Trim/Athboy road on the town's ring road and proceded to take an anti-clockwise loop out towards the village of Dunderry and townland of Kilbride before returning back to the Trim Industrial Estate for the finish. The route is held on quiet country roads with some hills at 3, 6, 8 mile segments.

The weather for this year's race was perfect for racing. There was a hard frost overnight but this brought clear bright skies and crisp air. There was no real wind to speak of.
Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. If the first three years of this year are anything to go on then this race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Refurbishment changes to the design and layout of this space have resulted in a 3 fold increase in the number of visitors, from 5,000 to 15,000 per month. The success of the space, in part, is due to the increased flexibility and comfort it now has, with the easily movable screens, furniture and the soft seating.
The separate colony of Queensland was established in 1859. The few inhabitants of the new colony looked to intensify economic exploitation of the land and increase the size of the population. The building of railways was seen to facilitate both of these aims and as such was given a high priority by the new Queensland government. Consequently, the Southern and Western Railway Bill was introduced to parliament in August 1863 and the government appointed Abram Fitzgibbon, an Irish engineer with international experience in railway construction, as Chief Engineer (later Commissioner for Railways). Fitzgibbon's first task was the construction of a railway between Ipswich and Toowoomba.
Planning for the new railway meant serious economic and geographic challenges had to be overcome. Earlier railway construction in the southern Australian colonies was modelled on the railways of Great Britain and featured broad gauge, double track, easy grades, wide radius curves and substantial station buildings. It was quickly discovered that the construction costs for such a rail system were beyond the budget of the fledgling Queensland colonial government. The natural geography around the Darling Downs also precluded an easy grade, with any railway requiring a steep ascent of the eastern escarpment of the Great Dividing Range and the crossing of several creeks and streams.
Fitzgibbon proposed a radical engineering solution to these challenges through the adoption of a narrow 3 feet 6 inch (1067mm) gauge. Standard gauge at the time was 4 feet 8½ inches (1435mm) and was in itself considered narrow when compared with other broad rail gauges then in use throughout the world. By using narrow gauge, savings on construction costs could be achieved. The disadvantages of such a decision meant sharper curves on ascending ranges, lower speeds, lighter bridges and as a consequence, smaller locomotives and rolling-stock. The use of narrow gauge was largely untried anywhere else in the world, except for small-scale narrow gauge operations in New Zealand and Wales.
Substantial cost savings were also to be made through the use of standard designs for bridges, buildings, houses and yards. At this time, the quality of Queensland timber was largely unknown and little was to be used on the first railway, except for sleepers. Bridges were to be built of iron with brick and stone culverts. It was only later that Queensland became a leader in wooden bridge design, with the emergence of elaborate timber designs and later more economical timber structures.
Construction of the railway was contracted to Peto, Brassey & Betts, a firm with considerable railway construction experience worldwide. A fixed sum contract was negotiated for the construction of the first line between Ipswich and Bigges Camp (today's Grandchester), with a follow on contract for four other sections of line between Bigges Camp and Toowoomba. Lady Diamantina Roma Bowen, wife of the first Governor-General of Queensland, turned the first sod of earth for the first section of railway on 25 February 1864.
The first consignment of construction materials arrived in Ipswich by steamer on 15 August 1864. An initial line was laid down to the wharf in Ipswich to receive consignments of materials and move them to a workshops site on level ground above. Public pressure for a bridge across the river resulted in a change of plan and the terminus was moved to South Ipswich in the business centre. A bridge was constructed to carry both road and rail and was just completed in time for the opening of the first section of rail to Grandchester.
The first trial run along the line with a train was on 13 April 1865. The first section of line between Ipswich and Bigges Camp (a distance of twenty-one miles) was officially opened to traffic to great public fanfare on 31 July 1865. The line ran from the Bremer Bridge and passed the original workshops and running sheds (North Ipswich Railway Workshops Complex - 601526) to the west and crossed Wide Gully. Extensions to the line were later made to Toowoomba (1867), Dalby (1868) and Warwick (1871).
The building of the Sadlier's Crossing Bridge and deviation, which opened in 1875, made the old line via Mihi Creek redundant and it fell out of use except for a short section to the Ipswich workshops and to service a coalmine. The line was officially closed on 26 April 1875.
Queensland Railways demonstrated the viability of the use of narrow gauge, thereby influencing other countries including Japan, Africa and New Zealand to also adopt the technology. The construction of the Ipswich to Bigges Camp railway, of which the Sandstone Railway Culvert at Wulkuraka is a part, set the precedent for the construction and design of the many lightly constructed and sinuous narrow gauge railways that have since been built around the world.

Blower Bentley, 1931
The Bentley 4½ Litre was a British sports car based on a rolling chassis built by Bentley Motors.[1] Replacing the Bentley 3 Litre, it is famous for epitomizing prewar British motor racing and for its popular slogan "there's no replacement for displacement", created by the founder of Bentley, Walter Owen Bentley. Bentley sought to produce a more powerful race car by increasing engine displacement.
At the time, noted car manufacturers like Bugatti and Lorraine-Dietrich focused on designing cars to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a popular automotive endurance course established only a few years earlier. A victory in this competition quickly elevated any car maker's reputation.
A total of 720 4½ Litre were produced between 1927 and 1931, including 55 models with a supercharged engine known as the Blower Bentley. A 4½ Litre Bentley won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1928. Though the 4½ Litre Bentley's competitive performance was not outstanding, it set several speed records, most famously in 1932 at Brooklands with a recorded speed of 222.03 km/h (138 mph).

Ouigo low-cost TGV services are to be expanded to a further eight stations in the north and west of the country in 2016.
Faced with increasing competition from the liberalisation of long-distance bus services and the growth of ride-sharing, the SNCF has unveiled a new commercial offer intended to ‘consolidate its leading position’ as a multi-modal operator.
Pointing out that ‘the transport market is changing’, and that people increasingly want to travel ‘easily, more often and at low cost’, President Guillaume Pepy explained that ‘we wanted to review all of our range of services in order to meet the expectations of the market, with a new offer that is clearer, fuller and more accessible.’
Executive Director, Passenger, Barbara Dalibard said SNCF was ‘looking to strengthen the foundations it has already established with Ouigo and iDBus.’ Since 2010, more than a million passengers have used the ‘100% eco’ tickets on Intercité services, of which 80% were new to rail. Another 1·5 million have used iDBus services since 2012, while Ouigo has carried 6 million passengers in just two years.
The ‘new offer’ will see long-distance travel divided into three bands, with the ‘high-quality’ TGV services at the top of the range. In the mid-range, a revamped network of Intercité and TER services will ensure ‘accessible journeys to the heart of the country’. All low-price offers will all be grouped together under the #OUI brand, including iDBus services which will now be marketed as OuiBus. Thanks to the use of digital technology including internet ticket sales. #OUI will be available throughout France, providing ‘the essentials of the trip, without frills and without compromise’.
From 2016 Ouigo trains will serve Tourcoing, TGV Haut Picardie, Nantes, Rennes, Le Mans, Angers, Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and Massy TGV, operating almost 50 trips per week. SNCF expects to offer more than 6 million tickets at fares starting from €10. OuiBus services will be doubled to 136 day and night routes connecting 46 destinations and offering 4 million seats from €5. According to Dalibard, this ‘massive offer’ at the low-cost end of the market should see #OUI services carrying 10 million passengers in 2016, rising to 18 million by 2018.
Pepy said SNCF was ‘clarifying’ its range ‘to make the whole offer simpler to understand and use. Not only will we give our customers more choice but we want give them all the means to compare.’ The core objective is to attract as many passengers as possible, ‘but this does not mean everyone travelling in the same way. So we want to offer solutions for everyone, everywhere and in complete confidence’.

La Sauzaie (Sunday, April 24, 2011) – Semi-Finalists were decided at the Protest Vendee Pro in excellent 4-5ft (1.5m) waves at La Sauzaie in an explosive morning session of competition which saw Alain Riou (Tahiti, PYF) 27, Chris Friend (Sunshine Coast, AUS) 20, Marlon Lipke (DEU) 27, and Tim Boal (Anglet, FRA) 27, remain in the hunt for this year's Protest Vendee Pro 2011 title.
Event officials and surfers were greeted with an overnight swell increase and light off-shore winds which combed the main peak throughout the entire day to offer the perfect playing field for modern progressive surfing.
Protest team rider Marlon Lipke destroyed the peeling lefts along the La Sauzaie reef with powerful gouges and flowing carves to completely dominate all three of his heats and enters the business end of the competition as one of the firm favourites. Lipke was one of the few competitors who have managed to read to perfection the shifting peak of La Sauzaie and only potentially high scoring waves.
“The left really suits me because it has a lot of open space to carve it through and then sometimes it jacks up and you can do a top turn and when that happens it is a plus for me to get the score. The normal left that runs through with a little bit of wall is really carvable but on the backhand it is not so.”
Lipke, a former Dream Tour member, grew in confidence with each of his appearances displaying signs of his surfing which sent him into the elite Top 44 in the 2009 season.
“I think the first heat I was still feeling the butterflies in my stomach but after that I relaxed and with each heat I am gaining more confidence. I kind of feel that I can get some waves and surf them the way I know how to and get some scores. Stoked to make a few heats as it has been a while and looking forward to tomorrow.”
Alain Riou came out on top of inform surfer Marc Lacomare (Hossegor, FRA) 19, who earlier in the day had posted the highest heat total of 17.00 out of 20 which included a deep backhand barrel followed by a savage snap in the pocket. To add to the drama, a power failure left competitors without scores for part of the heat.
“I knew Marc (Lacomare) didn't have any solid ones so even though there was no electricity I knew I was in the lead with the second wave I got, explained Riou. “I got a good wave first and then I sat a long time with priority. For 15 minutes there were waves but none that we wanted to catch so I sat there and eventually got one which wasn't great but I did a couple of ok turns and with a 6.00 I knew I had the lead but I also knew I had to get back out there and make the most of the priority.”
Riou, who finished equal 3rd, last week in Scotland, makes his second semi-final appearance in as many weeks and coming out on top over Lacomare made his achievement even more satisfying.
“I happy with the win because Marc (Lacomare) is an up-and-comer and a young surfer with a lot of hype about him so I knew it was going to be a tough one. There were quite a few good lefts in our heat and he kept away from them and was focused on the rights and he can do a lot of damage on the lefts with his airs as well so stoked to beat him and make it to the semis. Two semis inrow when I haven't made one in about two years.” (laughs)
Chris Friend ousted Vincent Duvignac (FRA) with flowing rail carves and forehand smashes on the La Sauzaie right and has secured his best result since a serious foot injury last year kept him from competitive surfing. On his first visit to the Protest Vendee Pro, Friend has adjusted quickly to the tidal changes and their effects on the main peak.
“I am so happy because this is my first result since I broke my foot and I am feeling really good and having fun out there. The waves are really good but with the tide it changes so much after each heat. I was watching the water two heats before mine and then I went off to get changed and came back and it was completely different so I had to sit down and talk to my mates and see what it was doing and readjust everything. The quality of the wave is good, it is just difficult trying to read where the reef sits and where the waves are the best.”
The young Australian was not rattled by his slow start and adjusted to perfection his wave ion and the changing conditions to gain the lead and hold on to make the semi-finals.
“Vincent I think tried to get the ball rolling quickly but I decided to wait and get a good wave which I didn't get until the last ten minutes so I had to change my game plan. I was initially going to go out there and wait for the sets but I ended up catching some of the inside ones and tried to build a house in the last part of the heat and it worked.”
Tim Boal, a former winner here in 2007, had a slow start to his heat due to an error in timing however managed to come out on top of former World Tour surfer Mickey Picon (FRA) despite not surfing to his full potential. In a tactical battle between two of Europe's most experienced campaigners, both surfers ed different peaks to surf and it proved the longer Rights ed by Boal to be the superior scoring waves.
“I paddled out late because I missed timed my changing and Mickey started off well but then I got my first one and a score on the board. I missed one good wave but then got really lucky at the end to get a good score. I blew it a couple of times in that heat so I'm lucky I made it.”
Boal will face fellow Protest team rider Marlon Lipke in semi-final number two when competition resumes tomorrow and hopes to get his surfing act together in time for the encounter.
“It will be a fun heat and hopefully I can surf a bit better. I haven't been really happy with my surfing but sometimes you think you surf well and you don't make any heats and sometimes it is the other way around. But I'll take the win.” (laughs)
The Protest Vendee Pro, stop nº2 on the Asp Europe Men's Series, offers surfers valuable ranking points on both the Asp Europe Men's Series and the Asp World rankings.

More people are likely to encounter increasing stress
on their water supply in the coming decades, as the
climate changes and the human population
continues to grow. Experts studying the threats to
people’s water security say much of western Europe
and North America appears to be under high stress
but trillions of dollars worth of engineering
palliatives have reconfigured the threat landscape so
that most of the serious threat disappears from
these regions. Africa, however, moves in the
opposite direction. What countries need are
portfolios of built infrastructure and natural
environment that can address the needs of
development. But for developed countries and the
BRIC group – Brazil, Russia, India and China – alone,
$800 billion per year will be required by 2015 to
cover investments in water infrastructure, a target
likely to go unmet. In Niger, a failed harvest in 2011
had WFP supporting 3.3 million people with lifesaving
food assistance.

Annesha is one of the Lambadi beach sellers who works on Majorda Beach in Goa. My family has known her for over 20 years. My mother first met her as a small girl. She described her as bright, beautiful and full of life. Aneesha was keen to learn English and would sit with my mother and talk. A few years later she got married. Aneesha seemed happy that her husband, "did not beat her much." She had two sons and then a daughter.
Aneesha's earning power as a beach trader outstripped her husband's as a daily labourer and he felt it was not worthwhile working and he could live on his wife's earnings. He began to drink and violence towards Aneesha began to increase.
The first tragedy occurred when Aneesha's daughter died. Her husband refused to look after the baby when she was working and Annesha paid a girl in her village to watch her. The girl dropped the baby on her head and she died shortly afterwards.
Aneesha's husband continued to beat her and demand money for drink. Running from a particularly severe beating, Aneesha jumped into a well to escape him. He followed. She was sober and came out again. He drowned.
It seemed possible that Aneesha might be blamed for his death but fortunately the Goan police did not pursue it. Life for young widowed women is not easy and Aneesha had to live with her mother in law in order to stay safe.
Since that time Aneesha has been working singlehandedly to bring up her sons. She never went to school and is illiterate but worked tirelessly to ensure that her sons received an education.
Last week she told me proudly that her eldest son, who is nearly 18 is still at school and is hoping to go to college. Her younger son is also still at school.
What she has achieved despite her circumstances is incredible. This year is proving difficult for her and the other beach girls. Apparently the local shopkeepers, fearing that the beach girls are taking their trade, have paid the police to ensure that they are not allowed to trade. If they are caught selling on the beach their goods get confiscated and can only be reclaimed in Panjim. The beach girls have to store their goods away from the beach and carry only a very small amount.
Annesha is probably about 32 or 33 but years of hardship and walking the beaches have taken their toll.

Leopard skins are in increasing demand among members of South Africa's Shembe Baptist Church, which has adopted the Zulu practice of wearing spotted cat fur (mainly leopard) during religious celebrations. Although trade in leopard skins is illegal in South Africa, the practice is widespread and expanding among the Shembe's estimated 5 million members. In order to reduce demand for real leopard skins, Tristan Dickerson, Panthera's Leopard Program Coordinator, has spent the past year working with digital designers and clothing companies to create a high-quality and affordable faux leopard skin which he will present at a future Shembe gathering.
This photo was taken by Tristan at a Shembe gathering that he visited to investigate the use of real and fake leopard skins.

Happy 50th anniversary La Silla Observatory
from yours @Spaceholix
with our travelbuddies,

@PinkLilDragon & houseguest @CamillaSpace
Thank YOU for being such a vital part of #TheCreationOfSpaceInspiration - not only for our family!
By discovering @ESO on social media back in 2012 during your #ESO50Years contest
YOU -amongst other space and science agencies- daily increased my curiosity and my wish to learn more about things out of my everyday business,
to explore and try things well outside my comfort zone and to #DareMightyThings.
One small step led to another and by nurturing that seed in me, an amazing journey gained speed for the three of us.
Thanks to the #MagicPowerOfSocialMedia,
my family and I explored some the most amazing places, met some the most inspiring people ever since, connected with people from all walks of life and from all around our beautiful #BlueDot sharing our passion for #Space and #Science - turning into an ever growing #SpaceFamily.
Thus YOU helped to enrich our lives with numerous unforgettable and often #ForrestGumpLikeMemories.
In a few of my entries for your first contest #ESO50Years #GoParanal from 2012 I wrote that I want to inspire my little one and to show him the beauty of our world and our universe and I am happy that -so far- we had many great chances doing so and I am looking forward to the future.
Sometimes I am wondering, how this German gal here with no professional scientific background at all did become a certified #AsteroidHunterRookie and #MeteoriteHunterRookie, live tweeted from @CERN‘s #LHC and -together with my family attended many space / science events by ESA and NASA TEDx and SpaceUp conferences traveling around our marble,...
... Organizing small space gatherings and sharing my art work and little mementos of our adventures specially designed for many of those events with all attendees AND speakers became a fond tradition in the past 7 years.
And having seen many astronauts, from Mercury and Apollo who flew to and walked on the moon to today’s inhabitants of the #ISS, astronomers, scientists, and our growing #SpaceFamily wearing my badges and lanyards and having them sign our Thank You posters always makes me smile.
And having become a member of the #IAAA (INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ASTRONOMICAL ARTISTS iaaa.org), with my artwork being auctioned off by Apollo astronauts and a painting which will be exhibited under #SpaceShuttle #Atlantis on 21.12.2018 during the #Apollo8 #Earthrise celebration also marking the launch of project #Constellation created by Nicole Passonno Stott, Ron Garan, Anousheh Ansari and Leland Melvin AT Kennedy Space Center in Florida will forever be surreal.
As THIS is the place where I finally fell in love with everything around #Space during watching my 1st of 3 #SpaceShuttle launches of #STS115 back in 2006.
AND from where I sent my very first tweet EVER on July 8th 2011, while watching the final launch of #Shuttle #Atlantis together with @LightspeedLeo on the day he turned 9 months old. What a birthday candle that was.

I am so looking forward to the day when our now 8 year old son will understand, whom he met since being a toddler and to which places we were invited.
So I want to thank all of you around @ESO for inviting the public to #ReachingBeyondTheStars -literally and figuratively and for doing what you do.
You all make a difference.
And knowing that OUR story is only one of many inspired by your work is amazing.
