I spotted this Tortoise and his Human Pal taking an ocean-front walk along the cliffs of Palos Verdes California. One thing about California, you will usually find something interesting or unusual, even when you're not looking for it : )
The Tortoise:
Tortoises are "cold-blooded," meaning their body temperature varies with the surrounding environment. They are also herbivores, meaning they eat plants. Tortoises are found in a variety of habitats, including deserts, forests, grasslands, and swamps.
There are over 300 species of tortoises, and they come in a wide range of sizes. The smallest tortoise is the speckled padloper tortoise, which is only about 4 inches long. The largest tortoise is the Galapagos tortoise, which can grow to be over 150 pounds.
Tortoises are long-lived animals. Some species can live for over 100 years. The oldest known tortoise is a Galapagos tortoise named Jonathan, who is over 190 years old.

We had a walk in an oak wood today as the autumn colours from them are stunning at the moment. Unfortunately I couldn't walk for any length of time as my gammy leg was causing me so much gyp. I did though manage to capture a few shots including this of a wonderful oak in full colour.

Many insects including butterflies have been suffering because of air pollutants, and by extension we also we suffer this effect. We will be in big trouble without the pollinators that distribute the polen to plants to form seeds and fruit.

This a Fritillary butterfly, another one that was left behind, this time from 2013. Right here in PA some butterflies have started to fly around, but the parks and recreation areas will have more of them around may, so next month I will packing my camera bag for the butterfly season!

Harbour Authority vessels, fishing boats, sailboats, yachts and various other water craft, including Kayaks, canoes and paddleboards share the waterway that runs along the banks of the Fraser River in Ladner, BC.
This small section of the River is lined with colourful float homes.
Ladner is a part of the City of Delta, British Columbia, Canada, and a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. It was created as a fishing village on the banks of the Fraser River.
Named for Thomas and William Ladner, who came to the area in 1868 and began large farming and fishing operations, it developed as a centre for these operations. A series of ferries, culminating in the Ladner Ferry, allowed for access across the river to Richmond. The George Massey Tunnel provided a permanent connection in 1959.History
Like many areas around the Fraser River on what is now Greater Vancouver the area on the south side of the south arm of the Fraser was named for the original Europeans to settle there. First called Ladner's Landing, the area was settled by Thomas Ellis Ladner (1837–1922) and William Henry Ladner (1826–1907).[1] They had travelled from their home in Cornwall, UK to pursue the gold rush in California and later on the Fraser River. Settling on the area of the Fraser River Delta either side of the Chilukthan Slough in 1868, both turned to farming and fishing.

Patience is a virtue as they say. My shooting partner, friend and ace photographer Mike Ryan of Michael Ryan Photography and myself have been patiently waiting for some scenes to come alive with the winter rains. Mike puts in tireless hours of scouting and researching areas, including myself, but not to the level of Mike. We have been bouncing around the Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt coastlines in search of beauty and solitude. When it all comes together it can be quite rewarding.

The eponymous owner of the Buick factory had already made many inventions during his younger years including the garden sprinkler and a way to enamel coat cast iron in a cheaper way.
In the year 1890, Buick became interested in the internal combustion engine, but for the time being produced stationary engine first.
In 1902 he founded the Buick Manufactoring Company whose purpose was to build engines and automobiles.
In the meantime, he had also invented the OHV enigine that allowed higher power than the side-valved enginers in use untill now.
Buick sold his company to James Whiting who brought William Durant to run the company, and these made the Buick brand one of the largest automobile builders in the United States.
In 1908 James Whiting founded General Motors with the earned capital as a holding company above the Buick brand, and through various acquisitions General Motors grew into a large concern of more than 30 companies and acquired an excellent reputation for reliability.
This juwel in the picture is an original 1931 condition Buick Series 90 with an 8 cylinder inline engine with a displacement of 5.650 cc and an output of 104 HP at only 2.800 rpm.
It was driven by a 3 speed manual trnasmission and its top speed was a staggering 160 km/h for the time.
His road handling was excellent and there was nothing lacking in passenger safety either, for example, the car was ecquipped with a front spotlight that rotated with the steering.
The famous "Flying Lady" adorns the top of the radiator cap as Buick's mascot., and it is like a small work of art........

Fairly small and gregarious parakeet with a long pointed tail. Found mainly in forests, including Araucaria forests and even in large urban parks. Green overall with a rusty frontal band, a maroon belly and undertail, and a scaled breast. Its face pattern is generally quite indistinct, but note buffy ear patches, white eyering, and dark bill. Sexes similar.

Xochimilco, Mexico 2015

The area of Xochimilco, located SE Mexico City, is what remains of the old wetlands, fed by fresh water springs, which covered the whole basin in the Pre-Hispanic period. Partially filled to create chinampas (artificial islands), it constitutes a canal system that was the main transportation venue until the 20th Century. Encompasing unique endangered plants and fauna, the whole area is seriously threatened since pumping of the underground water rocketed along the past century. It was delclared World Heritage Site in 1987, as an attempt to protect the area. It's a very popular place, not only for foreing visitors: locals, including Mexico City's entire families, do often go there to celebrate events, hiring one or more big trajineras along wiht Mariachis, to have lunch together.

Gannet - Morus Bassanus

The gannets are large white birds with yellowish heads; black-tipped wings; and long bills. Northern gannets are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, having a wingspan of up to 2 metres (6.6 ft). The other two species occur in the temperate seas around southern Africa, southern Australia and New Zealand.
Gannets hunt fish by diving into the sea from a height and pursuing their prey underwater. Gannets have a number of adaptations which enable them to do this:
no external nostrils, they are located inside the mouth instead;
air sacs in the face and chest under the skin which act like bubble wrapping, cushioning the impact with the water;
positioning of the eyes far enough forward on the face for binocular vision, allowing them to judge distances accurately.
Gannets can dive from a height of 30 metres (98 ft), achieving speeds of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) as they strike the water, enabling them to catch fish much deeper than most airborne birds.
The gannet's supposed capacity for eating large quantities of fish has led to gannet becoming a description of somebody with a voracious appetite.
Gannets are colonial breeders on islands and coasts, normally laying one chalky, blue egg. Gannets lack brood patches and they use their webbed feet to warm the eggs. It takes five years for gannets to reach maturity. First-year birds are completely black, and subsequent sub-adult plumages show increasing amounts of white.
The most important nesting ground for northern gannets is the United Kingdom with about two thirds of the world's population. These live mainly in Scotland, including the Shetland Isles. The rest of the world's population is divided between Canada, Ireland, Faroe Islands and Iceland, with small numbers in France (they are often seen in the Bay of Biscay), the Channel Islands, Norway and a single colony in Germany on Heligoland. The biggest northern gannet colony is on Scotland's Bass Rock; in 2014, this colony contained some 75,000 pairs. Sulasgeir off the coast of the Isle of Lewis, St. Kilda, Grassholm in Pembrokeshire, Bempton Cliffs in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Sceilig Bheag, Ireland and Bonaventure Island, Quebec are also important northern gannet breeding sites.
Young gannets were historically used as a food source, a tradition still practised in Ness, Scotland, where they are called guga. Like examples of continued traditional whale harvesting, the modern day hunting of gannet chicks results in great controversies as to whether it should continue to be afforded exemption from the ordinary protection afforded to sea birds in UK and EU law". The Ness hunt is currently limited to 2,000 chicks per year, and dates back at least to the Iron Age. The hunt is considered to be sustainable, as between 1902 and 2003 Gannet numbers in Scotland increased dramatically from 30,000 to 180,000.

Culzean Castle was constructed as an L-plan castle by order of the 10th Earl of Cassilis. He instructed the architect Robert Adam to rebuild a previous, but more basic, structure into a fine country house to be the seat of his earldom. The castle was built in stages between 1777 and 1792. It incorporates a large drum tower with a circular saloon inside (which overlooks the sea), a grand oval staircase and a suite of well-appointed apartments.
In 1945, the Kennedy family gave the castle and its grounds to the National Trust for Scotland (thus avoiding inheritance tax). In doing so, they stipulated that the apartment at the top of the castle be given to General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower in recognition of his role as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War. The General first visited Culzean Castle in 1946 and stayed there four times, including once while President of the United States.

The huge crab-smashing bill of this mangrove specialist sets it apart from all other pittas. Brightly colored with a black mask, green-and-black wings, and a yellow belly. Similar in color to Blue-winged Pitta, but note Mangrove’s larger-headed appearance and habitat. Like other pittas, shy and difficult to see; listen for its throaty and fluid two-parted whistles. We had searched for this pitta in Singapore but did not find it. However, we struck gold with this one, who was determined to be both seen and heard. He was singing away in the middle of the mangroves - a dark and gloomy place for photography - before hopping onto a branch just on the edge of the trees. Frantic clicking produced several usable shots, including this one.

The female, as seen here, lacks the bright colours of the male. The bird is a common resident breeder in southern India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and is found in a variety of habitats with trees, including gardens where they forage for nectar. In the monsoons it is a joy to watch them dew-bathing (bathing in rain collected on large leaves).
Contrails (short for condensation trails) or vapor trails are line-shaped clouds produced by aircraft engine exhaust or changes in air pressure, typically at aircraft cruising altitudes several miles above the Earth's surface. Contrails are composed primarily of water, in the form of ice crystals. The combination of water vapor in aircraft engine exhaust and the low ambient temperatures that exist at high altitudes allows the formation of the trails. Impurities in the engine exhaust from the fuel, including sulfur compounds (0.05% by weight in jet fuel) provide some of the particles that can serve as sites for water droplet growth in the exhaust and, if water droplets form, they might freeze to form ice particles that compose a contrail. Their formation can also be triggered by changes in air pressure in wingtip vortices or in the air over the entire wing surface. Contrails, and other clouds directly resulting from human activity, are collectively named homogenitus.
Depending on the temperature and humidity at the altitude the contrails form, they may be visible for only a few seconds or minutes, or may persist for hours and spread to be several miles wide, eventually resembling natural cirrus or altocumulus clouds. Persistent contrails are of particular interest to scientists because they increase the cloudiness of the atmosphere. The resulting cloud forms are formally described as homomutatus, and may resemble cirrus, cirrocumulus, or cirrostratus, and are sometimes called cirrus aviaticus. The chalk of Old Harry Rocks used to be part of a long stretch of chalk between Purbeck and the Isle of Wight, but remained as a headland after large parts of this seam were eroded away. As the headland suffered hydraulic action (a process in which air and water are forced into small cracks by the force of the sea, resulting in enlarging cracks), first caves, then arches formed. The tops of the arches collapsed after being weakened by rainfall and wind, leaving disconnected stacks. One of these stacks is known as Old Harry. Old Harry's Wife was another stack which was eroded through corrosion and abrasion, until the bottom was so weak the top fell away, leaving a stump.

Hummingbird sage, is a species of Salvia native to a wide area of South America, including Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. It is a perennial subshrub growing 4 to 5 ft (1.2 to 1.5 m) tall, spreading into a large patch. The inflorescences are up to 25 cm (9.8 in) long with flowers in various shades of blue, including an uncommonly true blue. Salvia guaranitica is a popular ornamental plant in mild areas.
The little black cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) is a member of the cormorant family of seabirds. It is common in smaller rivers and lakes throughout most areas of Australia and northern New Zealand, where it is known as the little black shag. It is around sixty centimetres long, and is all black with blue-green eyes. The little black cormorant is a small cormorant measuring 60–65 cm with all black plumage. The back has a greenish sheen. In breeding season, white feathers appear irregularly about the head and neck, with a whitish eyebrow evident. The plumage is a more fade brown afterwards. Males and females are identical in plumage. The long slender bill is grey, and legs and feet black. The iris of the adult is green and the juvenile brown. Immature birds have brown and black plumage. The little black cormorant ranges from the Malay Peninsula through Indonesia (but excluding Sumatra) and New Guinea (including the D'Entrecasteaux Islands) and throughout Australia. It is found in New Zealand's North Island. It is a predominantly freshwater species, found in bodies of water inland and occasionally sheltered coastal areas. It is almost always encountered in or near water. The little black cormorant feeds mainly on fish, and eats a higher proportion of fish than the frequently co-occurring little pied cormorant, which eats more decapods. 59100

I've found Campanula species in countless locations, including the mountains of Vancouver Island, the Alberta Rockies, the tall-grass prairie of Minnesota, and right here in the mixed-grass prairie of Saskatchewan. My wildflower guides all identified it as rotundifolia, but now online info says this species does not grow in Canada. However, other online sources claim that it does. And honestly I don't care anymore. Widespread taxonomic reclassification of many species has finally convinced me to focus on the art, rather than the science. I may not be able to ID wildflower species, but I know beauty when I see it.
Some of the harebells I've photographed in other locations were deep blue; in this shallow, protected depression amid rolling hills, they were a pale lavender or purple. I resisted the temptation to oversaturate, and instead retained the light, airy feel that I remember from the place.
Tripod, 105mm macro lens with 1.7x teleconverter. I find the tc useful in that it gives me a more out of focus background in shots like this than the 105 alone. And if there are insects on the flowers, I have greater working distance.
