Pentatomidae are a family of insects belonging to order Hemiptera, including some of the stink bugs and shield bugs. Since I absolutely love small bugs, finding this red-eyed beauty on a table outside was a wonderful treat. It was a slow-moving critter, so I had lots of time to delight in our encounter.

A large falcon that is endemic to South Asia including parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. This is as large as a Peregine Falcon and taller than Saker Falcon, but more leaner unlike the bulky build of Saker Falcon or Peregrine Falcon. We sighted them on two days in action - they were hunting in the area and one of them was fighting with the Saker Falcon. They seem to be quite common in the desert regions and as a fan of falcons was delighted to be sighting them and seeing them in action.

This was sighted in Pokhran, again a desert region. The bird was hunting in the area possibly targeting the many small birds like Pipits, Larks, Crested Larks, Wheatears etc.. There was no dearth of prey. Unfortunately, we didn't see it with any catch though and we were in a rush to see the Indian Bustards, so had to move along.

Many thanks in advance for your views, faves and feedback - very much appreciated.

United Kingdom, Dorset, Old Harry Rocks

Old Harry Rocks are three chalk formations, including a stack and a stump, located on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, southern England. They mark the most eastern point of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are various stories about the origin of the rock's name. One legend says that the Devil (traditionally known euphemistically as "Old Harry") slept on the rocks. Another local legend says that the rocks were named after Harry Paye, the infamous Poole pirate, whose ship hid behind the rocks awaiting passing merchantmen. Yet another tale has it that a storm thwarted a ninth-century Viking raid and that one of the drowned, Earl Harold, was turned into a pillar of chalk. The ashes of novelist H.G. Wells were scattered in the water off Old Harry Rocks.

137th MMM Reflections Challenge

An early morning start and a 2 hour drive from my home in Christchurch to Lake Heron for a few photo’s and then a morning trout fishing at this beautiful spot in the Ashburton Lakes area. With plenty of action on the water with fish seeming to be saying I’m here, I settled on a few compositions including this frame looking South East along the shore.

An estimated 45,000 people visited Morecambe for this year's Vintage by the Sea festival including record crowds on the first day.

The event on Morecambe Promenade, in its 11th year, celebrated the iconic music, fashion, film, art, design and dance of the 20th century on Saturday and Sunday.

The vintage festival, centred around the Midland, the Platform and the Promenade Gardens, was blessed with glorious sunny weather on Saturday and Sunday was mainly dry too, with rain only coming late in the afternoon.

People dressed in fashions from the 20s to the 90s to strut their stuff and the Vintage Marketplace at The Platform and the local and regional makers' market in The Midland were huge attractions.

Perfectly preserved classic cars outside the Midland and Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust’s vintage bus rides from Heysham to Bare also proved very popular.

Other events included the iconic Best In Show catwalk, vintage cycle bike rides, and the new Boogie Ballroom with popular classes including Bhangra with Sohan Kailey, the Charleston, Northern Soul and even breakdancing with the nationally acclaimed UC Crew Powered by Hip Hop.

"We were absolutely thrilled to see so many thousands and thousands of people in Morecambe this weekend, enjoying not only the joyful festival programme made possible by so many artists and performers, but also to see our audiences take in everything else Morecambe has to offer as so many local cafes, restaurants, bars and shops put on their own Fringe events, ensuring the Promenade has never felt so vibrant," said Elena Jackson from Deco Publique and the festival organising team.

"Vintage by the Sea really is a shared celebration of this place and we’d like to thank each and every person who had a role in making the event happen and who joined as a visitor over the weekend”.

Couple packages arrived today including another Vocaloid Miku pullip, Chicca's stock (I had been looking for it for forever!) and several additions to my pinky street army. DMIR 402 and 409 hustle a northbound ID pellet train through Biwabik, MN with 116 cars to load at Minntac back on June 29, 2004. Searchlights were still over all the place on the former Missabe. It's the former Missabe as CN took over the property the month before.

Last month, CN finally took out of service the last of the searchlights on the Iron Range Sub. between Allen Jct. and Iron Junction, including these here at South Biwabik.

Both the 402 and 409 still work the former DMIR albeit in CN paint. CN has spent the time and money to put PTC on both tunnel motors so maybe they'll continue to roam northeast Minnesota for many or a few more years?

I'm including another one of my underwater photos.

We are here at a depth of about 10 meters in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Key Largo, Florida.

For once, what I saw here wasn't a sea creature. But it impressed me no less.

Never in my life would I have expected to find here a statue of Christ about 3 meters tall. But there it was, standing there, arms outstretched, looking up toward the water's surface.

The symbolism of this posture in this location immediately fascinated and moved me.

It's as if he, trapped in this dark and wet prison, is crying out for air and freedom.

This image may be a bit macabre, and you don't have to share it. But I immediately felt an oppressive feeling when I saw this sculpture. And this feeling recurs whenever I look at this photo.

Three bulls including Hoback (the big old bull on the right) hanging out at a creek with a cow. The rut is over at this point, so the bulls are relaxed and perhaps just wondering who the father is. I purposely used a closed aperture for a big depth of field, which ended up also showing the telephone lines in the distance. Next season I'll either open the aperture or get in the creek or both. Sveti Stefan, pronounced now Aman Sveti Stefan including the Villa Miločer formerly Sveti Stefan Hotel is a small islet and hotel resort in Montenegro, approximately 6 kilometres southeast of Budva.

The resort includes the islet of Sveti Stefan and part of the mainland, where the Villa Miločer part of the resort is located. An Adriatic playground for the rich and famous from the 1960s to the 1980s, the hotel is now a 5-star franchise hotel of the international group of Aman Resorts, completed in 2009 and operating under a 30 year lease. Formerly an island, Sveti Stefan is now connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. The resort in total contains 50 rooms, cottages and suites on the island and 8 grand suites at the Villa Miločer.

Gustaf Adolfs torg ("Gustaf Adolf's square") is a town square located in central Gothenburg, Sweden. It was named Stortorget (the Big Square) until 1854 when a statue of the founding father of Gothenburg, king Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was raised. Surrounding the square are the city hall, the bource, including the law court extension and the main harbour canal of Gothenburg.

Gustav II Adolf (1594–1632) led Sweden to military supremacy during the Thirty Years' War, helping to determine the political as well as the religious balance of power in Europe. His most notable military victory was the Battle of Breitenfeld. He was poised to make himself a major European leader, but was killed at the Battle of Lützen in 1632. Within only a few years of his accession, Sweden had become the largest nation in Europe after Russia and Spain.

I love a theme like this week's, when we had to photograph one thing on top of another thing, because it has endless possibilities. That's also its biggest challenge, of course. What to choose? As often happens, I tried a number of subjects, but in the end opted for this one. I've no idea why really. Perhaps I just like feathers. :)

For this week's Macro Mondays group theme, On Top. The bird feeder is about ¾" high, including the hoop.

Like many large rivers running through towns and urban centres, the Ottawa River is susceptible to flooding, especially during freshet. As a result there are many systems in place to try to regulate the flow - including in the fall. As such, the water levels on the River can suddenly rise, after weeks of receding. This is the kind of water flow management that makes residents along the River more secure, and migrating shorebirds less secure.

Last summer water levels receded and parts of the shoreline opened up, creating all kinds of habitat for the migrants. The summer before that it was quite dramatic: I could walk out into the River bed and hang out with all manner of shorebirds, in places that should have seen four to five feet of moving water.

This year water levels went up a couple of weeks ago in a manner, and at a time, that impacted the variety and number of migrants who visit the area.

Sparrowhawk - Accipiter Nisus

Though it is a predator which specialises in catching woodland birds, the Eurasian sparrowhawk can be found in any habitat and often hunts garden birds in towns and cities. Males tend to take smaller birds, including tits, finches, and sparrows; females catch primarily thrushes and starlings, but are capable of killing birds weighing 500 g (18 oz) or more.

The Eurasian sparrowhawk is found throughout the temperate and subtropical parts of the Old World; while birds from the northern parts of the range migrate south for winter, their southern counterparts remain resident or make dispersive movements. Eurasian sparrowhawks breed in suitable woodland of any type, with the nest, measuring up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) across, built using twigs in a tree. Four or five pale blue, brown-spotted eggs are laid; the success of the breeding attempt is dependent on the female maintaining a high weight while the male brings her food. The chicks hatch after 33 days and fledge after 24 to 28 days.

The probability of a juvenile surviving its first year is 34%, with 69% of adults surviving from one year to the next. Mortality in young males is greater than that of young females and the typical lifespan is four years. This species is now one of the most common birds of prey in Europe, although the population crashed after the Second World War. Organochlorine insecticides used to treat seeds before sowing built up in the bird population, and the concentrations in Eurasian sparrowhawks were enough to kill some outright and incapacitate others; affected birds laid eggs with fragile shells which broke during incubation. However, its population recovered after the chemicals were banned, and it is now relatively common, classified as being of Least Concern by BirdLife International.

The Eurasian sparrowhawk's hunting behaviour has brought it into conflict with humans for hundreds of years, particularly racing pigeon owners and people rearing poultry and gamebirds. It has also been blamed for decreases in passerine populations. The increase in population of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk coincides with the decline in House Sparrows in Britain. Studies of racing pigeon deaths found that Eurasian sparrowhawks were responsible for less than 1%. Falconers have utilised the Eurasian sparrowhawk since at least the 16th century; although the species has a reputation for being difficult to train, it is also praised for its courage. The species features in Teutonic mythology and is mentioned in works by writers including William Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Ted Hughes.

Male Eurasian sparrowhawks regularly kill birds weighing up to 40 g (1.4 oz) and sometimes up to 120 g (4.2 oz); females can tackle prey up to 500 g (18 oz) or more. The weight of food consumed by adult birds daily is estimated to be 40–50 g (1.4–1.8 oz) for males and 50–70 g (1.8–2.5 oz) for females. During one year, a pair of Eurasian sparrowhawks could take 2,200 house sparrows, 600 common blackbirds or 110 wood pigeons. Species that feed in the open, far from cover, or are conspicuous by their behaviour or coloration, are taken more often by Eurasian sparrowhawks. For example, great tits and house sparrows are vulnerable to attack. Eurasian sparrowhawks may account for more than 50% of deaths in certain species, but the extent varies from area to area.

Males tend to take tits, finches, sparrows and buntings; females often take thrushes and starlings. Larger quarry (such as doves and magpies) may not die immediately but succumb during feather plucking and eating. More than 120 bird species have been recorded as prey and individual Eurasian sparrowhawks may specialise in certain prey. The birds taken are usually adults or fledglings, though chicks in the nest and carrion are sometimes eaten. Small mammals, including bats, are sometimes caught but insects are eaten only very rarely.

Boundary Bay Air Demonstration

British Columbia

Canada

The Snowbirds, officially known as 431 Air Demonstration Squadron are the military aerobatics or air show flight demonstration team of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The team is based at 15 Wing Moose Jaw near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The Snowbirds' official purpose is to "demonstrate the skill, professionalism, and teamwork of Canadian Forces personnel". The Snowbirds are the first Canadian air demonstration team to be designated as a squadron.

The show team flies 11 CT-114 Tutors—nine for aerobatic performances, including two solo aircraft, and two as spares, flown by the team coordinators. Approximately 80 Canadian Forces personnel work with the squadron full-time; 24 personnel are in the show team that travels during the show season. The Snowbirds are the only major military aerobatics team that operates without a support aircraft.

The Snowbirds continue the flying demonstration tradition of previous Canadian air force aerobatic teams, which include the Siskins, the Blue Devils, the Golden Hawks, and the Golden Centennaires.

Number 431 Squadron formed on 11 November 1942, at RAF Burn (in North Yorkshire), flying Wellington B.X medium bombers with No. 4 Group RAF Bomber Command. The squadron moved to RAF Tholthorpe in mid-1943 as part of the move to bring all RCAF squadrons into one operational group – No. 6 Group RCAF – and converted to Halifax B.V four-engined heavy bombers. In December 1943 the squadron moved to RAF Croft where it was re-equipped with Halifax IIIs and later, Lancaster B.X aircraft. The squadron moved to RCAF Station Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, after the war, disbanding there on 5 September 1945.

Smarden has 131 listed buildings including these prominent buildings dating from Smarden’s weaving era and later years:

The Cloth Hall

Smarden became very prosperous and some fine houses were built in the 15th and 16th centuries, many of which remain today. The Cloth Hall (1430) is an example of a fifteenth-century yeoman's timber hall house. Although built as a farm it became the central clearing warehouse for the local cloth industry; the broad-cloth would have been taken from there to the port of Faversham

The Anastasia Formation extends for 2 miles north along the shoreline with cliffs up to 15 feet high at the House of Refuge. Looking south from the end of the boardwalk, Bathtub Reef is visible.

Immediately ahead is an outcrop with small burrows, aminated crusts, solution pipes, a notch and an abrasion platform, and a mass of collapsed rock. Moving north along the beach moving toward the House of Refuge, there are several outcrops with conspicuous notches.

At the House of Refuge are prominent planar bedding, many fossils (including Busycon), small and large burrows, thick laminated calcium carbonate crusts, lithified infillings, solution pipes, notched cliffs, promontories and small coves, and many large masses of collapsed bedrock.

The State Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan is an art museum located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, founded in 1937 as a temporary exhibition for handicrafts. The museum contains over 4,000 exhibits on decorative art in Uzbekistan, including wood carving, ceramics, embossing, jewelry, gold weaving, embroidery, and samples of mass production in local industry.

Until the beginning of the 21st century, the museum was located in the former palace of the Russian diplomat Alexander Alexandrovich Polovtsev Jr..

The museum building, known as the Polovtsev house, was purchased by his secretary Mikhail Stepanovich Andreev from Tashkent merchant Nikolai Ivanovich Ivanov. Under Andreev's guidance, the interiors of the house were readjusted and refurbished to fit an Oriental style. The main architect of this restructuring was A. A. Burmeyster. The house was known colloquially as the "Polovtsev House". The building is an example of Oriental architectural and decorative art, built in the late 19th century. The decoration, carving and painting of the building was done by Uzbek folk artists Usta T. Arsankulov, A. Kazymdzhanov (Tashkent), Usta Shirin Muradov (Bukhara), Usta A. Palvanov (Khiva), and Usta Abdullah (Rishtan).

There are multiple definitions for when a boat becomes a ship, including size, purpose, and other characteristics:

Size: Some say a ship is a vessel that's at least 197 feet (60 meters) long. Others say a ship is a large, ocean-faring vessel.

Purpose: A ship is a versatile vessel that can be used for commercial, military, or scientific purposes. A boat is often used for leisure activities.

Masts: A sailing ship may be defined as having at least three masts.

Deck: A ship may have a through-fitted deck, while a boat may have an open cockpit.

Weight: A ship may weigh at least 500 tonnes.

Crew: A ship may have a commander and a crew, while a boat may just have whomever is on it at the time.

Personal use: A vessel may be considered a yacht if it was constructed solely for personal use and has a combined occupancy of less than 100, including crew.

Submarines are technically ships, but they are traditionally referred to as boats. The original submarines were small and manned only when in use, so “boat” was appropriate.
