interesting experiment this - conductors conduct and orchestra of improvisors reacts - occasional flashes of something brilliant - also occasional arguments between orchestra members
-What-
Perform a solo - this is the only gesture in Soundpainting that asks for a solo to be performed. The soloist is given the freedom to fully go in any direction they choose. A common example would be signing a trumpet “improvise” during a “swing feel”. In the early days Soundpainting was used to build an accompaniment to support the soloist. The “improvise” gesture may also be used in conjunction with other gestures ie. Soundpainter signs brass 1, improvise, with, long tones – “brass 1” uses “long tone” as the focus of her/his improvisation but may also include other related or unrelated ideas. Because the performer is in “improvise” the use of other ideas is a parameter of this gesture. In another example the Soundpainter signs whole group, improvise, with, one word, initiate – in this example all disciplines would speak and improvise with one word but they may also incorporate their discipline in conjunction with or tangentially to the “improvised” word. A saxophonist might choose to speak the word through their instrument and then quickly play something unrelated – a dancer might choose to speak the word while simultaneously moving with a “vertical vibratory” phrase – an actor might speak the word in as many ways as possible while interjecting “air sounds”.
