I was working as a principal in a school last week and teaching a class an introduction to ComicLife. Unfortunately the student computers are not allowed to connect directly to the Smartboard, so I had to do a bit of improvisation.
The night the power went out, my main worry was that if the power did not come on the next day what would I do with the animals, particularly the cats? We tried asking some friends, but no one responed in the affirmative.
So then I thought "well, maybe I can construct a little cool area for them." I went out and bought a couple battery powered fans and a bag of ice.
And you know what? It was pretty cool (literally) if you were right in front of the fans with the block of ice there.
But I knew it was going to fail when before I was able to get all of the ice in, the ice on the bottom had already started melting. Within an hour, all nine pounds of ice had melted.
So the cats ended up being boarded at the vet for a day. (When we brought the cats in, the vet asked how many days we would need. I hadn't until that moment even considered the idea that the power would remain out more than 24 hours. Boy was I mistaken--though fortunately the power did come back on in the afternoon the next day, so the cats only had to stay one night.)
I've spotted this hard case for headphones at RadioShack store. It's pretty solid (I can even try to sit on it), lightweight, round (it means no extra space consumed) and well-made. Something around $3. Fits any screw-in filters and caps up to 55mm. Can hold up to three filters. That's all I need for my filters I'm using with Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 (UV, Circular polarizer, Neutral density gradual).
Seen here in an improvised "double boiler," i.e., a stainless steel mixing pan atop a boiling pan of water.
Apparently, there are dedicated double boilers. I use it so rarely, I could never justify the cost - so, I make do, which works perfectly.
And, $ave$ money!

114 degrees and no air conditioning in any house. We improvised swim suits and stayed close to the pool.
