Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū is the most important Shinto shrine in the city of Kamakura. The shrine is at the geographical and cultural center of the city of Kamakura, which has largely grown around it and its 1.8 km approach.

Kamakura is an ancient city that has produced its own, original culture. Once it was a political capital along with Nara and Kyoto, and also the birthplace of Japan's first military government, the "Kamakura Bakufu."

Warrior Minamoto no Yoritomo was appointed as Seii-Taishogun (shogun) by the Imperial court in 1192 and established the Kamakura Bakufu government, which is the first military government in Japan, whereas previously the Imperial court in Kyotoheld power.

After Yoritomo's death, the Hojo clan governed this area. Trade with the Sung and Yuan dynasties of China prospered in the 13th century and a various aspects of Chinese culture, including Zen (Buddhism), Zen-style architecture, Buddhist statures, and Chinese lacquer ware, were imported.

The Kamakura Bakufu ended in 1333. But the military culture of that era, in which the simple and strong spirit of warriors, traditional aristocratic culture, and Chinese Sung and Yuan culture were blended, has continued to greatly influence Japanese society down to the present day.

Kamakura began flourishing as a temple town in the 17th century. From the 19th century, it became popular for beaches, resort areas, and residential districts.

Kawabata Yasunari, a writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, lived and wrote many works in Kamakura. Blessed with the nature of the ocean and surrounding green hills, Kamakura today attracts a large number of tourists.

important note: I searched and searched for this place due to the fact that Bianca Cassidy (one of the sisters in Cocorosie) recently opened this gallery/tea house in Montmartre - sounded rad. Welp this is it, looks like a dump, but I am certain it is a magical place.

You can't come down the slide without my say so!

Important corner site with fronts to Bank Street and Piece Hall Yard. Built as the Bradford Commercial Bank and completed to the designs of Andrews and Pepper in 1868. Elaborate Gothic with mid C13 detail, complementing the Wool Exchange. Two-storeys and attics, millstone grit ashlar with sandstone and polished granite dressings. The corner is emphasised by a square 3-storey tower with a pierced, pinnacled, parapet and surmounted by a steep truncated slate roof with large lucarne dormers and wrought iron cresting. The windows and doors have pink or grey granite shaft colonettes, the foliate capital mouldings continued as impost bands. Drip moulds on head stops. The first floor windows are of 2-lights with quatrefoils piercing the tympani. The first floor windows on the corner tower have applied crocketed gables and give onto pierced stone balconies. Above the first floor is a corbelled pierced stone parapet with sharply gabled dormers set behind. The banking hall has a corbelled vaulted ceiling divided into panels decorated with Coats of Arms. This is a Very Important Landmark House right across the street from me. The problem is, nobody knows just what makes it a landmark. Even the people who live there don't know why it's a landmark. But don't get me wrong - it's a VERY IMPORTANT LANDMARK HOUSE.

I was lucky enough to sit next to the VIP box where the Queen and her hosts were seated. What amazed me was that she looked exactly as she does on photos. Throughout the ceremony she seemed to show genuine interest in the proceedings, occasionally smiling and talking with John Howard next to her. Look at my tale of woe about how I got the seat at www.srsa.gov.za/PageMaster.asp?ID=186.
