Reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata or Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata), aka Somali giraffe, crossing the nearly dry Ewaso Nyiro River resulting from the devastating drought impacting this region of northern Kenya.
Samburu National Reserve, Kenya.
Conservation status: Endangered
The Milky Way streaks through the sky and makes a visual impact with a Pinnacle at Trona.
This is a single exposure taken during the new moon using "Low Level Lighting". I'm not sure why I liked this one, maybe it's the way the outer pinnacles lean in, so I bailed on the lens correction during the processing phase, and because of this it seemed as if the impact was wrapping the surface of the planet around the "Visual Impact".

A coyote begins her day early in Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve
Two weeks after containment of the Woolsey Fire
The Woolsey Fire consumed 88% of the Santa Monica mountains park land...a huge amount. While things look grim for this coyote, she will probably do better than some of the other animals. A recent study looked at the impact of fires on wildlife and coyotes were some of the most successful animals in these areas. Smaller animals and reptiles are what really take a hit. I’m planning to try and document different aspects of the burn area as it hopefully recovers from this horrible disaster. As I do so I will be posting photos from various areas within the park. It is depressing looking at these barren areas but I’m hoping with the rain we’ve been getting things will recover more quickly than they might with no rain.
When I took the photo I didn't see the impact the flight of the pelican had on the water below, granted maybe it is just by chance bacause the water behind him wasn't distubed, or maybe he was coming in for a landing.

This mature Bald Eagle is making a grab at the fish in the water and keeping it's eyes on the target in that moment so it doesn't miss. Although they do sometimes miss and for different reasons.

Longships Lighthouse is an active 19th-century lighthouse about 1.25 mi (2.0 km) off the coast of Land's End in Cornwall, England. It is the second lighthouse to be built on Carn Bras, the highest of the Longships islets which rises 39 feet (12 m) above high water level. In 1988 the lighthouse was automated, and the keepers withdrawn. It is now remotely monitored from the Trinity House Operations & Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex.

I've always thought of successful landscape photography as the intersection of chance and preparedness. You can prepare as much as you like, but you can't control the conditions on a given day.
This was the last morning of our Alberta trip. My friends and I got up kinda late and didn't really want to venture too far for a day where we'd be later traveling to our respective homes. And to add to that, the weather forecasts didn't look great either. We assumed we'd be looking for intimate scenes in the ice, if that. As expected, the morning was completely overcast - we couldn't even see some of the mountains. We walked out along the lake and spread out looking for interesting ice. The lake wasn't as clear as I'd have liked, and it began to snow very lightly. Gradually, we all seemed to come to the conclusion that this morning was going to be a miss. Chance did not appear to be on hour side.
After packing up, the three of us started to gradually make our way back to the car, but extra slowly; as if still holding hope for a miracle. Out of nowhere, the cloud began to break around only part of this mountain - slightly showing its ridges through the falling snow and cloud. Immediately, compositions started jumping out of everywhere. The three of us scattered like frightened cats. I started frantically searching for cracks or other features in the ice before the snow covered it up! I managed to find this crack just as the ridges of the mountain became very prominent, and in the end I felt that the bit of snow that had already accumulated actually added to the scene. Before long, the crack wasn't really visible any more, but thankfully I managed to get this shot before the scene fell apart.
Anyway, it just goes to show you that sometimes taking your sweet time giving up on a scene can pay off!

One of my favority rocks to take shots of. In actuality, it's part of an old jetty that was mostly removed a year or two ago.
What a difference a change of colour can make. This is a Mono conversion of my last post. Think it turned out quite dramatic.
This is a very long exposure of 601 secs, using a Lee Big Stopper together with a Little Stopper.
