The Fourth Grand Flaneur Walk took on Sunday, May 5th, 2024, and commenced at midday by the statue of Beau Brummell on Jermyn Street, London W1. The Grand Flaneur Walk celebrates the pure, the immutable, and the pointless, and it is taken by the bold, the adventurous, and the inebriated. The walk went through Green Park towards Hyde Park Corner.

I am critical of American failings - and there are many - Slavery, Treatment of Native Americans and do much more. But the experiment is at its core a noble one, even if the men, and I emphasize men, because women and others were excluded, were deeply flawed. The genius is in the ability to change and adapt and grow toward the better angels of humanity. The fathers were enlightenment men, and that spirit is bigger than them. The immutable pursuit of logic was born of the scientific revolution and the same conclusions that solidified the existence of the atom also revealed the similarity in all humans. We are all products of nature, passengers on the same Earth and with sufficient opportunity we can do great things if we want. The sky is limitless.
The enemy is the pettiness and greed of humanity. The genius of the fathers was their ability to suggest that time moves on things can change and they don't know what it will be in the future, but human motives will always be the same. Yet Free Will is also part of the gift of democracy. It can produce antibiotics and it can produce people who kill others to steal their goods. It is a hard slog without guarantee even 250 years later - as is everent now with Bozo Trump's haphazard and petty way of "running" a government. He's thin-skinned petty, resentful, entitled, greedy, and stupid. He's also smart and dumb enough to do what the founders didn't do, gin up hate and xenophobia, and grievance. He has no solutions and even less ideas other than to enrichen himself. His selection of bootlickers over competent people shows his inability to do anything.
And despite the current threat to American democracy, and it is severe, I am still a patriot who believes in the good things that have been done and accomplished and most importantly, the possibility of what the experiment could be. It was started flawed but still evolves. Paul Revere rode (and Sybil Ludington and probably others lost to history) risking their lives to empower the Revolution. Many men fought and were maimed and killed. Many fled to Canada and I cannot fault them, and respect them, as with all revolutions there is no guarantee of a win. I have family who fought on both sides. And today (except for idiot Trump) we are solid Allies with our Canadians, and British.....and think about this....in our lifetimes people fought the Japanese and Germans and Italians brutally and these three countries are our world allies. Many Germans Italians and Japanese are our citizens and brethren. Today's enemies will hopefully be tomorrow's siblings as well.
So a toast to Paul Revere and others who dodged British checkpoints and spies and government officials to warn the ragtag Colonial Army and the Citizens of Boston that the invasion was coming. May our people find the same brave spirit during this dark time.

Provence, as a foretaste of Italy, has always attracted poets, painters and writers who have been captivated by its climate and moved to celebrate its light. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the wild Mediterranean landscape, unchanged down through the centuries, became a new Arcadia for artists who were intent on exploring the territory and their imaginations in equal measure. Harpignies’ conception of landscape differed from that of his contemporaries in that he favoured the immutable aspects of Nature over its momentary effects.
An avid admirer of Corot and François-Louis Français, who was a friend of his, Harpignies practised plein air painting throughout France. Anatole France, who recognized the artist’s fondness for this theme, called him the “Michelangelo of the trees.” In response to an invitation from the students in his Paris studio, Harpignies would head to the South of France, putting the greyness of the Île-de-France behind him; or he would set out on the road to Italy, whose landscapes would earn him numerous prizes and medals in the Salon. Although faithful to the principles of the Barbizon School, the artist, who was an accomplished draftsman, used colour in the service of form. In this painting, the structure of the trees predominates, while the seascape and mountain views are merely suggested in order to convey the general atmosphere. This canvas imbued with naturalism quietly heralds the master’s final works, which are characterized by the fresh luminosity he acquired through contact with his young colleagues and his experiences with watercolours.

Tony Cragg (born 1949, UK) is one of the world’s foremost sculptors, constantly pushing to find new relations between people and the material world. In the 1980s, Cragg began to make sculptures suggestive of architecture...
These totemic piles of found objects and machined parts suggest an industrial counterpoint to the history of man-made achievements, while his other work nearby, Tools, made from sandstone, conveys the opposite, being hand wrought versions of mechanical aids, such as screwdrivers and mallets. Cragg sees no difference between the natural and the artificial, preferring to acknowledge the bridges between the two, the synthetic here acquiring figurative qualities in some of the bust-like tools, while his stacked turrets of spacers, washers and engine spares travel back through time to suggest archaeological accretions and geological strata.

In celebration of this anniversary, the gallery is partnering with The Vinyl Factory to stage ‘EVERYTHING AT ONCE’, an ambitious group exhibition inspired by these words, which could very well apply to our current anxiety-ridden age of ceaseless communication. Through new and historical works by 24 of the artists currently shown by Lisson Gallery (out of more than 150 to have had solo shows over the past 50 years), this extensive presentation aims to collapse half a century of artistic endeavour under one roof, while telescoping its original aims into an unknowable future.
As Cage predicted, we increasingly live in an all-at-once age, in which time and space are no longer rational or linear concepts and great distances can be traversed with an instantaneous click. More than ever before, contemporary art, like life, assaults us simultaneously from all angles and from anywhere on the globe, existing also as multisensory visions of an accelerated world.
In response, ‘EVERYTHING AT ONCE’ is neither a chronological exhibition nor an encyclopaedic history of the gallery’s activities since 1967, rather it is an interconnected journey incorporating 45 works exploring experience, effect and event, invoking immediacy and immutability. Haroon Mirza (born 1977, UK) has won international acclaim for installations that test the interplay and friction between sound and light waves and electric current. Transcribing a complex working drawing by LA-based artist Channa Horwitz (1932–2013), Mirza turns her notational sequences and matrices into a multi-coloured, sonic score. The electric noise of the currents that light the LEDs in one of the eight possible configurations and colour combinations, as marked by Horwitz, is simul-taneously translated via speakers to audible noise pulses in different octaves. Together, these acoustic, visual interpretations of the Horwitz data result in a choreographed, compositional concert, which is at once computer-programmed and man-made – both ‘live’ and historic.
A Chamber for Horwitz; Sonakinatography Transcriptions in Surround Sound is a conceptual development of an earlier piece by Mirza, titled Adam, Eve, Others and a UFO (2013).

Conceptual artist Ceal Floyer (born 1968) is celebrated for her deft manoeuvres in everyday situations, testing the slippage between function and implication, the literal and the imagined – reconfiguring familiar objects as sources of surprise and humour.
Providing circuitous guidance around the exhibition is her performative work, Taking a Line for a Walk, which plays on Paul Klee’s 1923 assertion that a drawing should be: “An active line on a walk, moving freely, without goal. A walk for walk’s sake”. After this helpful intervention – marked by the discarded, spent painting machine, typically used to delineate football pitches.

The only mockingbird commonly found in the U.S. Mimics the songs of other birds as well as insects and amphibians. A bit of trivia. It was the mockingbirds on Galapagos Islands that triggered Darwin's thoughts that species were not immutable. He noticed the mockingbirds on the islands were different from those on the mainland. He became convinced that species were transmutable and eventually expounded this to his theory of evolution.

Cory Arcangel (born 1978, USA) is a leading exponent of technology-based art, drawn to video games, software and online platforms for their ability to formulate new communities and traditions and, equally, for their rapid obsolescence.
These four projections depict elements of a hacked video game from the early 1990s, its modified cartridges and Nintendo consoles are also on display as the only other components of the work. This endless intro screen captures a foreboding Soviet fighter jet, partially frozen mid-bombing mission over a nameless Middle Eastern country, suspended next to a trio of scudding clouds and computer-blue skies.
Incorporating hacking as an artistic practice, Arcangel remains faithful to open source culture, making his working methods available online and thus superimposing a perpetual question-mark as to the value
of the art object.

Haroon Mirza (born 1977, UK) has won international acclaim for installations that test the interplay and friction between sound and light waves and electric current. Transcribing a complex working drawing by LA-based artist Channa Horwitz (1932–2013), Mirza turns her notational sequences and matrices into a multi-coloured, sonic score. The electric noise of the currents that light the LEDs in one of the eight possible configurations and colour combinations, as marked by Horwitz, is simul-taneously translated via speakers to audible noise pulses in different octaves. Together, these acoustic, visual interpretations of the Horwitz data result in a choreographed, compositional concert, which is at once computer-programmed and man-made – both ‘live’ and historic.
A Chamber for Horwitz; Sonakinatography Transcriptions in Surround Sound is a conceptual development of an earlier piece by Mirza, titled Adam, Eve, Others and a UFO (2013).

Employing contemporary materials such as electric circuits, video, and computer systems, Tatsuo Miyajima (born 1957, Japan) creates supremely technological works centred on his use of LED counters, or ‘gadgets’ as he calls them. These numbers, flashing in continual and repetitious cycles from 1 up to 9 or from 9 down to 1, represent the journey from birth to death, the finality of which is symbolised by ‘0’, the void or zero point, which consequently never appears in his work.
Time Waterfall is a new work by Miyajima in which numbers tumble randomly and incessantly for eternity, with the different sizes of the numerals and varying speeds of descent representing the trajectory of individual lives within that continuum.
