The catbirds arrived a few weeks ago, with the brown thrashers. Along with the mockingbirds (year round residents) the backyard is very noisy. The catbirds, thrashers, and mockingbirds are such wonderful mimics, imitating the calls of so many different birds that I'm never quite sure what I'm listening to. Backyard bird.
A group of Capuchin monkeys (Cebus imitator) near the roadside on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, were using a barbed wire fence and wooden supports surrounding a grazing field to get from tree to tree. Perhaps they felt it was safer than going though the tall grasses on the ground with the danger of snakes?

I have been debating recently whether to post about this. Its a bit of a tussle between me being reluctant to go into my health publicy vs a strong desire to raise awareness to my like minded friends about something a bit nasty that I think landscape photographers, hikers, campers (really anyone that loves the outdoors) should be really careful of.
My health was great until the summer of 2019 when I was suddenly knocked off balance by a range of weird symptoms. I was put on beta blockers for a racing heart. My speech went all weird. I was pretty scared. Finally this summer I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease (aka the Great Imitator) as it copies other illnesses and can be misdiagnosed. I had to be tested to rule out MS etc... Even after the correct antibiotics I am left with speech fatigue (I just sound a bit drunk all the time), brain fog and constant nerve tingling. This is the reason why I had to take redundancy from my job.
However I am lucky. I have a reasonable quality of life. For a start I still have enough energy to get up for sunrises. Some sufferers are in a lot of pain, fatigued and bedridden. I know of someone who partly lost his eyesight.
I may have to seek private treatment in the New Year from a Lyme specialist clinic despite having no job. This is the reality for a lot of LD sufferers.
Because ordinary mosquitoes love me (I'm always getting bitten) I don't remember my tick bite and this proved costly and made diagnosis harder, I spent months blaming the meno.
Please look out for ticks all year round. If you do get a bulls eye rash go to the doctor without delay and get antibiotics. Don't wear shorts on summer shoots. Carry a tick removal kit.
There is loads of information on the Lyme Disease UK website and their support group has been invaluable to me.
Thank you to my friends on here for being supportive. Sorry for the long post x
A Capuchin monkey (Cebus imitator) sitting in a large tree, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. The monkeys were named for their resemblance to the Capuchin monks who wore white hoods. They are also called 'organ grinder' monkeys since in the old days they often accompanied street entertainers hand grinding organs.

The title is an obvious Ansel Adams rip-off, but really more of an homage to the Master. Ansel was a light chaser of the highest order. My skill level may relegate me to the level of an Ansel imitator, but I didn't come to Yosemite to just imitate Ansel Adams. I wanted to see how I would respond to the vistas that he saw, and create something that expressed my vision, informed by what his incredible images inspired in me. Never having been to Yosemite before, perhaps I can be forgiven for producing something a bit derivative. When I took this photo, it seemed obvious that it had to be monochrome in the end. Anyway, this is where my head is at right now, photographically.
Desmognathus imitator from Sevier County, Tennessee. At first glance, this image looks quite similar to the Plethodon jordani I posted yesterday. Not only for the setting, but for the general appearance of the subject. P. jordani is generally unpalatable to predators. D. imitator, on the other hand is nontoxic and could be on the menu. As its name implies, D. imitator is a mimic of P. jordani, and therefor may benefit from this latter's foul taste and be avoided by predators.
Just back from a holiday in the Loire (France). Although I have seen many Hummingbird Hawkmoths, I have never before seen a version of it with clear wings!! What an amazing sight when I first saw it!! They don't live long - and I don't know how common they are in France (most of the internet pages I went to to learn about it talked about it being mainly located in America!) - and they only have a really short life-span (about a week I believe) - so I think I was really lucky to see and capture one of them!!
three primates from Costa Rica. from Wiki: Four species of monkey are native to the forests of Costa Rica, the Central American squirrel monkey (Saimiri oerstedii), the Panamanian white-faced capuchin (Cebus imitator), the mantled howler (Alouatta palliata) and Geoffroy's spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi). All four species are classified scientifically as New World Monkeys. Two of the species, the Central American squirrel monkey and the white-faced capuchin, belong to the family Cebidae, the family containing the squirrel monkeys and capuchins. The other two species belong to the family Atelidae, the family containing the howler monkeys, spider monkeys, woolly monkeys and muriquis.[4][5] Each of the four species can be seen in national parks within Costa Rica, where viewing them in natural surroundings is a popular tourist attraction.[6][7] The only park in which all four species can be seen is Corcovado National Park, on the Osa Peninsula. Of these, the squirrel monkey is endangered, living only in secondary forests and partially logged primary forests on the central and south Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and on the Pacific coast of Panama near the Costa Rican border.
The spiritual father is above all a human being who has allowed himself to be led by the Spirit and who has become a docile tool in God’s hand. Therefore he will not attempt to call the disciple to be an imitator of him, for all of us are disciples of Christ, who himself is the sole master. Never will he stand at his side, escorting him, since he is but a human being and not an angel. Rather he follows him humbly, like a servant, in order to be helpful, when needed, to the one who, like himself driven by the Spirit, follows in the footsteps of Christ. This requires that he, even more attentively than the disciple himself, listen to what the Spirit of God wants for his spiritual son and he thereby entirely disregards what may appear to him as personally advisable. The disciple will hear from his mouth only the word of God, not mere human wisdom.

Happy St. Nicholas Day!
Today, December 19, in Ukraine, celebrate St. Nicholas Day.
St. Nicholas Day has religious roots and traditions of celebration.
Orthodox celebrate St. Nicholas, known for many miracles. He is called the imitator of the holy life of Christ and the bearer of virtue.
Catholics honor the memory of St. Nikolay annually on December 6 as the patron saint of travelers and children.
In Europe, Christmas holidays begin precisely from the day of St. Nicholas.
In the tenth century, in the Cologne Cathedral, on the day of Nicholas's memory, sweets began to be given to students of the parish school, and later in Germany in the houses began to hang shoes or socks in order, that St. Nicholas put gifts there for the children. These traditions quickly spread throughout Europe.
Gifts are received on this day only obedient children, and naughty wait for rods. But in anticipation of the holiday, the children try not to be naughty and no one remains without gifts from St. Nicholas.

Saint Philoumenos, came from the village of Orounta of Morphou province.
Reading the life of Saint John of Caucasus, as another imitator, he burned up the desires of this world and practiced in the Holy Land of Jerusalem for 46 years by destroying the patriarchate there, as a guardian of holy places, but excluding his Jacob , which became the place of his martyrdom. On November 16, 1979 AD. (Nov. 29 with the new calendar) , Zionist fanatics, who claimed the pilgrimage as their own, devastated him at the time of the eclipse, Holy Fathers received their honest relic after five days and buried it in the holy land.
Four years later, during the funeral of a fallen member of the holy brotherhood, the tomb of Father Filumenom was opened to make bone recovery. All of us then attended an excellent and marvelous show. The body of the dead Archimandrite was intact and fragrant. They closed the tomb until Christmas AD 1984, when at the funeral of Archbishop Pellis Claudius opened again. The body continued to be unaltered and fragrant. The relic was placed with all devotion in a glass reliquary in the northern part of St. Stephen in the holy temple of Agia Sion, where it is also the object of worship by thousands of believers.

Blue Jay has a reputation for noisy bully. It is known for its high-pitched squeals and the ability to imitate the loud cries of the hawks. The bird often uses this to drive competitors from the feeders. This trick works for long. Usually after some time disturbed the birds come back. Sometimes jay pleasing surrounding soft and quiet song or imitation of the sounds of songbirds. Despite its bright plumage, the bird is easily masked in the tree branches, even when everything is covered with snow. Jay wonderful imitators.
I like this photo because, even if it is not spectacular, it is the acme of a short history and more it is decipherable only if one has the key (already widely supplied by the title).
As you were able to notice it in the previous photos, the house of the shipowner of Havre is built around a central and cylindrical light shaft on several floors. I was thus in a floor and the children in the floor below when I saw the girl start to flatten his hands as you see inciting the boy (his brother I suppose, not knowing them) to do the same there. This one has a little to grumble at first then entered into the spirit of the game. Meh, you go to tell me, what could be more commonplace. The bit extra of this story, is that the windows overlooking the central well have no windows. It is a simulation game of mime. And I'm quite happy to have captured this image when the boy positions the first hand and where the girl has this look a little illuminated with the one who succeeded, for once, has to involve his brother in a game which she introduced (well, there I interpret).

Oneto Tom (detail), 1882 by sculptor Giulio Monteverde (Bistagno 1837- Rome 1917)
This tomb was commissioned by Francesco Oneto, a rich merchant and President of the "Banca Generale". The angel, holding the trumpet of the Universal Judgment with its right hand, offers no consolatory gesture, but seems distant and imperturbable. The sensuality of this statue deeply shocked the contemporaries but enijoyed a greet success as well: it was replicated countless times, both by the artist himself and by his imitators; it can be found in various versions in many cemiteries in Italy, France, Germany, England and in North and South America.

The Asahiflex IIb (1954), shown here branded as "Tower 23" for the Sears Company of Chicago, was the world's first marketed single-lens reflex camera with a self-returning mirror. This was more than a minor revolution in photography: the "black-out" after releasing the shutter (still to be found in many single-lens reflexes even into the 1960s) had been overcome. This removed one of the drawbacks of the single-lens reflex concept as opposed to twin-lens reflexes such as the Rolleiflex or range-finder cameras such as the Leica and its numerous imitators. Note that the Asahiflex, in common with the excellent Praktina, has a second "look-though" viewfinder. The shutter release is quiet and smooth, with just a light "clack" from the mirror. Asahi's next step was to incude slow shutter speeds (Asahiflex IIa), followed by the Asahi Pentax (1957) with pentaprism viewfinder, quick wind-on lever, M-42 screw-mount, and many other improvements.
Mounted on the camera is an Asahi Kogaku Takumar 100mm f:3.5 (1952, M-37 screw-mount), a very beautiful triplet lens (see my album), but one which practically needs three hands for easy operation, as the focussing ring is easily moved when the aperture is adjusted.

Mimic Poison Frog (Ranitomeya imitator) - San Martin Department, Peru
These are the reason that I am here in Peru, I am working with this species and Ranitomeya variabilis. Ranitomeya imitator is truly an amazing little frog, it utilizes tiny little pools of water as deposition sites for its tadpoles which gives them an advantage as these tiny little pools of water are devoid of competitors and predators, however they also don't contain enough nutrients for the tadpoles to survive to metamorphosis so the male frequently checks up on them. He will then lead the female back to the sites where the tadpoles are located and she will lay an unfertilized egg for the tadpoles to feed on in a behavior called trophic egg feeding. So far these are the only frogs that have been shown to be genetically monogomous, likely evolved due to the need for high levels of biparental care. This is the first individual I have photographed of this species but certainly not the last, more photos to come as I take them!
Back in the late sixties when the whole social scene was being turned upside down, a photographer named William Eggleston began to capture the imagination of American photography by recording images of exceedingly mundane everyday objects using color film. Monochrome was the medium of choice in professional photography at that time and color was considered suitable mostly for amateurs and family vacation photos. The color print films of that day were pretty awful. Remember ANSCO? At that time Eggleston’s work was considered very eccentric but today it would hardly raise an eyebrow. Ordinary mundane objects found in nondescript settings were recorded as if they were the Queen of England sitting for a royal portrait. An ordinary ceiling fan or child’s tricycle were presented as if they were an object of Van Gogh’s attention. I think Eggleston’s real goal was to thumb his nose at social convention and the fine arts crowd. He was at war with the obvious it is said. In so doing he opened the way for the rest of us to really see and be free in doing so. His work appears easy to imitate on the surface but beware. His imitators almost never capture his magic. He is still the undisputed king.

almost every day. This picture I drew in
1988 and it toke me 8hrs.
To be an imitator of God,
requires that we come to
terms with the value of
quietness, slowing down,
coming apart from the noise
and speed of today's pace,
and broadening our lives
with a view of the eternal reach
of time. It means saying no to
more and more activities that
increase the speed of our
squirrel cage. Knowing God
requires that we "be still."
Be still and
know that I am God.

The Art of Being Well by Dr. Drauzio Varella
If you don't want to be ill… …Speak Your Feelings.
Emotions and feelings that are hidden, repressed, end in illnesses as: gastritis, ulcer, lumbar pains, spinal. With time, the repression of the feelings degenerates to the cancer. Then, we go to a confidante, to share our intimacy, our "secret", our errors! The dialogue, the speech, the word, is a powerful remedy and an excellent therapy!
If you don't want to be ill… …Make Decisions.
The undecided person remains in doubt, in anxiety, in anguish. Indecision accumulates problems, worries and aggressions. Human history is made of decisions To decide is precisely to know to renounce, to know to lose advantages and values to win others. The undecided people are victims of gastric ailments, nervous pains and problems of the skin.
If you don't want to be ill… …Find Solutions
Negative people do not find solutions and they enlarge problems. They prefer lamentation, gossip, pessimism. It is better to light a match that to regret the darkness. A bee is small, but produces one of the sweetest things that exist. We are what we think. The negative thought generates negative energy that is transformed into illness.
If you don't want to be ill… …Don't Live By Appearances.
Who hides reality, pretends, poses and always wants to give the impression of being well. He wants to be seen as perfect, easy-going, etc. but is accumulating tons of weight. A bronze statue with feet of clay. There is nothing worse for the health than to live on appearances and facades. These are people with a lot of varnish and little root. Their destiny is the pharmacy, the hospital and pain.
If you don't want to be ill… …Accept.
The refusal of acceptance and the absence of self-esteem, make us alienate ourselves. Being at one with ourselves is the core of a healthy life. They who do not accept this, become envious, jealous, imitators, ultra-competitive, destructive. Be accepted, accept that you are accepted, accept the criticisms. It is wisdom, good sense and therapy.
If you don't want to be ill… …Trust.
Who does not trust, does not communicate, is not opened, is not related, does not create deep and stable relations, does not know to do true friendships. Without confidence, there is not relationship. Distrust is a lack of faith in you and in faith itself.
If you don't want to be ill… …Do not Live Life Sad.
Good humor. Laughter. Rest. Happiness. These replenish health and bring long life. The happy person has the gift to improve the environment wherever they live. "Good humor saves us from the hands of the doctor." Happiness is health and therapy.

It's another grey day here, so I thought I'd inject a bit of colour into it. Red certainly does that!
This is a Bimini-style glass button from the 1950s. Bimini buttons were popular at the time, so it's not surprising there were a number of imitators. Other manufacturers buttons weren't back-marked with the signature flowerpot symbol that Bimini used. However, it's also true that not all genuine Bimini buttons had that mark, so it's actually impossible to say whether this one is or isn't. None of that matters because I just like the colour. :)
Mimic Poison Frog (Ranitomeya imitator) - Cordillera Escallera, Peru
Each Ranitomeya imitator has a unique arrangement of spots on its back (and belly), in the field we use these arrangements to identify individual frogs using the spotting almost like a 'fingerprint' system. This here is one of my study frogs, most likely a female. To identify the individual I would compare to an previous photo I took showing the dorsal pattern. I would pick a few different traits and quickly look and see if they were present or not, for example: the long stripe on the right side of the frog that looks as if 3 spots have flowed together, and then the 2 spots on the behind that look like a figure 8, I could look at more if needed but usually that's enough. Also if the spotting on the back was insufficient I could capture it and look at the belly spots, which are unique as well, I have not needed to do this to ID any individuals yet. The reason I am able to study particular frogs is that this species maintains territories containing a single pair of adults, so generally I have an idea of which frogs I might run into in a given area and I can just compare them versus their neighbors. I go back to the same sites day after day and relocate the same frogs in order to establish the boundaries of their territories.
UPDATE: When I went back to this territory today I saw this frog with its mate. I was mistaken about it being female, this one is actually the male.
