Emanuel Shinwell (1884-1986) (standing), socialist and Labour MP, with J Samond (agent) and Hugh M[?]nin (miners leader) at an election meeting in 1918.

 

Shinwell was born in London, but moved to Glasgow with his family when he was 11. He was a socialist and campaigned with trade unions for the 40 hour week before being elected as Labour MP for Linlithgow in 1922. Shinwell served as financial secretary for the War Office in 1929, Secretary for Mines (1930-1931), Minister for Fuel and Power (1945-1947), Secretary of State for War (1947-1950), Minister of Defence (1950-1951) and was made a Baron in 1970.

Description: Poster attacking the coalition National Government of Ramsey Macdonald as well as calling on readers to demonstrate their opposition to the British Union of Fascists. BUF leader Oswald Mosley led a march to Hyde Park in September 1934.

 

William Joyce ("Lord Haw-Haw" in the Second World War) attempted to prosecute the Daily Worker newspaper for incitement to violence because it urged anti-fascists to counter-demonstrate against the Blackshirts in this way.
