Description: "W. Ambrose Esq. paying last toll Burwell Nest Toll Bar, Cambs." Photo by Frederick Gillson's "Sunnyside Studios" in Burwell.
In decline from the 1870s this photograph purports to show the last payment for travelling along a turnpike (toll) road. Turnpikes were administered by trusts, formed to maintain the roads. At its peak in the 1830s, this unpopular system was rendered largely unprofitable by the arrival of the railways. Local councils took over responsibility for roads by 1890.
