This cloud pattern over the Atlantic Ocean was captured by Meteosat on 3 September 2014, at 1130 UTC. The clouds are known as "dendritic clouds" and are shallow cumulus clouds that form over warm tropical water. Although they look quite unusual the patterns are relatively common, but were difficult to identify and study before the satellite era.

The fissure eruption at Holuhraun in Iceland was continuing on Wednesday, as the Icelandic Met Office kept a close eye on seismic activity near the Bardarbunga caldera. A full report of the progress of magma underground and possible eruption scenarios is provided regularly in English here: en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/articles/nr/2947 This image from Metop shows lava, as well as a smoke cloud drifting to the northeast from the eruption site. The Metop satellite has also detected sulphur dioxide in the area, which is confirmed by measurements on the ground. The eruption has not produced much ash, and there has been no ash fall.
