Not tied to any one particular adventure, Shuluth is an epic-tier Mind Flayer introduced as an example of how to make an epic, legendary bad guy in the rules. Since his introduction, he's made cameos around the D&D web site and in miniatures, but has yet ot really find a place in canonical lore. His story makes him less of a scheming mastermind and more of a survivor - Shuluth has defeated many, many teams of Illithid hunters, and has dedicated his life to taking down anybody who thinks they can kill a Mind Flayer.
Wow, he's actually kinda sympathetic. I'm sure that's a great comfort when he's eating somebody's brains.
Mind Flayer : A doodle for my son. Haven't played in years but is still fun to draw this stuff.
I liked the old school D&D. The drawings were simpler, less realistic and left more to the imagination. In today's GCI heavy world imagination is less required.
But anyway I remember the old mind flayer as an alien being that was dragged aboard a space ship that crashed in Greyhawk. The ship also had robots and weird technology which was so foreign to our medieval characters (and generally beat our butts).
The old mind flayer was a one-of-a-kind creature and I was fascinated with the idea of this beast landing and being forced to make a home in the medieval world. He would be like "Hank" from "a Connecticut Yankee in King Aurthur's Court" and would wow (more likely terrify) the medieval world with his "wizardry". In this quick sketch it is still donning his future clothes.
Not all mind flayers are mystic psychics or mages. Some choose to take a few levels in rogue! Shadow Flayers can make themselves nearly invisible in the darkness, striking with weapons just as well as their mind blasts - your brain tastes just as good either way.
Using the body of a dragon as a weapon, an Elder Brain can now command its Illithid army more directly!
The Alhoon, or Illithilich, is what happens when a Mind Flayer chooses to become a lich. It becomes a pariah to its people by embracins necromancy and rejecting the psionic heritage of the Illithids, but trades it for immortality. Alhoons combine the deviousness and genius evil of the Mind Flayers with the crafty cruelty and power of a lich. Beware!
Evil even for an Illithid, the Mind Flayer Scourge is one of the most feared varieties of its kind! Beware, it will harvest your brain if it gets half the chance.
Not all Mind Flayers are mages and psionics - some pride themselves in their physical prowess, fighting from the shadows like a ninja of old.

Macro photography has been a favorite genre of mine for a long time. The ability to take even mundane subjects and turn them into alien, almost eldritch constructs or landscapes has always been fascinating to me. So, when I was lucky enough to win a copy of the Baldur's Gate 3 Collector's Edition, I knew I had to photograph the absolutely grotesque Mind Flayer figure that was included with it. Capturing such a horrifying creature, even in plastic miniature, was a lot of fun, and I hope it is something I will get to do more of in the future.
Below the mighty Elder Brains and the Ulitharid Nobles are the mind Flayer Concords - ruling councils over Illithid civilization, representing their various factions. They are intelligent even for their race, wise and far-seeing, and make their already-terrifying race even deadlier.
He's not just a Mind Flayer, he's a SCOURGE! Though they all are, what with their archvillainy, brain-eating, and whatnot.
Last one from this Mighty Max set, I promise!
But seriously, who doesn't want to see a squid-man piloting a submarine?
One of the supreme powers of his race, Shuluth is an ancient Illithid who has defeated many would-be heroes. His whole life has been dedicated to equipping his people with bigger and better weapons, and he himself is certainly no slouch in combat. His schemes rarely fail.

These pictures were all taken at Dragon*Con 2012, which I attended with a friend of mine, Matt Refghi. While there, I hosted a few interviews, and they can be found on my blog.
Make sure to check out Matt's blog, as he has Dragon*Con related posts, interviews, and photos.
I did this right after I did the Beholder. It was mostly easy. The arms and robe were difficult. The eyes were a bonus. I redid and improve the Beholder then I lost interest. This is another D&D creature. I attempted a variation that presented a different tentacle formation but it created problems for the overall design so I didn't keep it.
Powerful, wise, crafty and evil beyond imagining, the nobility of the Mind Flayers have plans that last centuries.

In the annals of travel, I'd say that this has got to be the most inconvenient time ever. Ten years ago, travel was still, just about, a matter of contacting somebody who would then do the work for you. These days, you're expected to sit in front of your computer and work out which one of the myriad of ways is the best for you. Plane? Train? Car? Ferry? Bus?
What's even better is the severe butt-raping that is now happening. It's summer, and therefore all the tickets have suddenly doubled in cost. Thanks a bunch East Coast, at least my tax money will be spent on keeping a good infrastructu... oh. Wait. What's that? You can't even run a website?
Well fuck-a-doodle-do.
Tacolos is one of Neclos's most trusted henchmen, a powerful sorcerer from the deep!
Just saying, this should be Takolos - "Tako" meaning Octopus, and all.
This is a mind flayer pirate. It's a totally sweet miniature, and I feel like I did a decent paint job on it. LOTS of folds and stuff, some very hard to reach places. Still the finished product is very rewarding. If you'd like to get one for your very own, it's Bthuhi, Bathalian Pirate RPR 03135. Ask for it at your local game shop to support them! Or get it online for a few bucks less. =p
Name: Wisenka Sarkt
Age: 75
Birthplace: Lagurno
Birth date: 95 years ago
Personality: Patient and calculating, he is willing to wait years while carefully positioning his thralls before taking any action openly against a threat or objective.
Histyory:
25 years ago, an execution squad led by Rowan the Illithid slayer fell upon Haszak Che'el like a biblical plague killing all who opposed them. Countless Illithid were lost in the ensuing battle and even more numerous but worthless slaves fell before blade and brain of Rowan. The damage caused to the city itself was of little concern to the mind flayers, their only goal was the defense of their Elder Brain. It was there in the cistern of the Elder Brain that the city fell and the slaves freed.
However, that was a quarter century ago, creaturesí native to the Underdark has repopulated the shattered skeleton of Haszak Che'el. Among those creatureís lurks Sarkt, the lone survivor of the slaughter. Although revenge still burns in his twisted alien mind, Sarktís primary concern was to recapture enough slaves ( And to his fortune, his favorite slave, the nymph Amelia remained hidden for his return) to build him a suitable estate and provide nourishment during times of famine.
With his new estate completed, slave pens refilled, and fresh magical items in stock, it become time that sarkt revisited the surface worldÖwell not personally of course, his thrall was more than ëwillingí to return to the land of fresh air and sun.
