Friday, June 3 I hiked the Letchworth State Park trail 1 along the west side of the Genesee River gorge end-to-end with a loop back. It was a beautiful day for hiking - a few clouds and high about 75F. I took lots of photographs with the Olympus OM2 and Ilford HP5.

Since Mark says the @deviantart WeeklyFotoChallenge is "underexposed", I decided to pull out this set from several weeks ago at Dublin Corners Farm Brewery. The whole series is silhouettes as I was shooting into a bright background; this one was underexposed as well. But it still worked reasonably well.

I drove through rain showers on my way there but had no rain after I started walking. It was still overcast at the beginning of my walk with beautiful subdued lighting at the beginning and bright sun later on.

Another day, another hike. I followed the Letchworth east rim trail past the Middle and Upper Falls. Just upriver from the Upper Falls is railroad bridge across the gorge. This portion of the rim trail is part of the Letchworth branch of the Finger Lakes Trail that runs east-west across upstate New York.

A significant chunk of the east rim trail between where I started on the park road and the railroad bridge was lost some decades ago when that part of the gorge wall collapsed into the valley below. The unofficial detour winds up and around the collapse area until it can pick up the old route a few hundred yards before the bridge. It can be tricky walking with a pack. The newer and official FLT detour follows the park round, a gravel public road, and a gravel and old dirt road until it can rejoin the original trail. From there one can continue southbound or backtrack along the rim trail to the railroad bridge. This detour avoids the nasty highway roadwalk followed by an earlier official detour.

I followed the unofficial detour south past the bridge then back up and around along the rerouted official detour. The public road begins where the detour crosses the railroad east of the bridge. Photographs were called for.

Stony Brook State Park is definitely a people park, and the people are generally respectful of the park and of each other. The gorge trail is a popular attraction. It is officially one-way now to promote social distancing. I saw only a few people walking against the flow.

This stretch is one of the prettiest in the park. I have taken many photographs here over the decades.

There is small overlook along the trail at the very beginning of the Archery Field Area. I sat down on the stone wall and loaded a fresh roll of film in the OM-2. This was the first shot on the roll.
