Across the west end of the Cathedral, the brass line on the floor is a sundial that functions with a ray of light entering from above the first window on the right. It was installed in 1786, and restored in 1976, with the addition of the signs of the zodiac that had been removed when reflooring was done earlier.
....amazed and thoughtful....probably a little bit tired, too...as we had gone up a few hundred stairs on foot, turning our backs to the elivator...but:
...what a place

Milan Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Milano; Milanese: Domm de Milan) is the cathedral church of Milan in Lombardy, northern Italy. Dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente (Saint Mary Nascent), it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Cardinal Angelo Scola.
The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete. It is the fourth largest cathedral in the world and by far the largest in Italy. (St. Peter's in Rome, though considerably larger, is not a cathedral.)

Tourists in front of the exterior of the main church of Florence. It's proper name is Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore but it is most commonly known as Il Duomo di Firenze. The cathedral was started in 1296 but not finished until 1436 (Italy)
These panels on the baptistery doors are actually reproductions of the originals by Ghiberti. The originals are now held in the Duomo Museum to keep them from deteriorating any further.
The bell tower of Florence Cathedral is a) beautiful and b) quite a bit high. And you can go up there. I did. And because I'm not the youngest and fittest anymore I thought I'd have to die. I literally had to lie down at the top to catch my breath.

Milan Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Milano) is the cathedral church of Milan, Italy. Dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity (Santa Maria Nascente), it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Cardinal Angelo Scola. The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete, having been commenced in 1386 and completed in 1965. It is the 5th-largest church in the world and the largest in Italy. Because the cathedral was built over such a long period there are a number of contrasting styles (which have caused varied judgments concerning its architectural and artistic success), and the quality of the workmanship also varies.
