Antonio Francesco Gramsci (22 January 1891 – 27 April 1937) was an Italian Marxist philosopher, journalist, linguist, writer and politician. He wrote on philosophy, political theory, sociology, history and linguistics. He was a founding member and one-time leader of the Communist Party of Italy and was imprisoned by Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime.
Gramsci wrote more than 30 notebooks and 3,000 pages of history and analysis during his imprisonment. His Prison Notebooks are considered a highly original contribution to 20th-century political theory. Gramsci drew insights from varying sources – not only other Marxists but also thinkers such as Niccolò Machiavelli, Vilfredo Pareto, Georges Sorel and Benedetto Croce. The notebooks cover a wide range of topics, including Italian history and nationalism, the French Revolution, fascism, Taylorism and Fordism, civil society, folklore, religion and high and popular culture.
Gramsci is best known for his theory of cultural hegemony, which describes how the state and ruling capitalist class – the bourgeoisie – use cultural institutions to maintain power in capitalist societies. The bourgeoisie, in Gramsci's view, develops a hegemonic culture using ideology rather than violence, economic force, or coercion. Hegemonic culture propagates its own values and norms so that they become the "common sense" values of all and thus maintain the status quo. Cultural hegemony is therefore used to maintain consent to the capitalist order, rather than the use of force to maintain order. This cultural hegemony is produced and reproduced by the dominant class through the institutions that form the superstructure.
Gramsci also attempted to break from the economic determinism of traditional Marxist thought, and so is sometimes described as a neo-Marxist. He held a humanistic understanding of Marxism, seeing it as a "philosophy of praxis" and an "absolute historicism" that transcends traditional materialism and traditional idealism.

This is how it feels to live in Melbourne at the moment. It is not a commentary on which side of the political divide I support but about the fractures along political lines and ideology resulting in relentless vitriol and negativity that has fractured friendships and our once united city (and Country).
At the beginning it was all about standing together -bipartisan leadership and co-operation. Didn't take long for it to deteriorate into political point scoring at our expense.
This image just evolved and I guess I'm not sure it works. I took it from a bridge over-looking the freeway last year. Looking at it and the view of Melbourne town, just got me thinking about how much I love it and how broken it feels right now.
We will come back and be whole again. The talk of the move to mostly outdoor dining as has happened successfully in other countries even got me alittle excited this morning. You know how I love fairy lights.
Sometimes wonderful, long lasting ideas and new ways to do things arise from tragedies and I am sure that will happen in Melbourne as it will across the world. We just need to stop the cracks getting too big.
I live in this country for 48 years, after 5 years of living here, I became an American citizen and served in the army from which I already retired, I am proud to live in a free country that respects the right to freedom, everything bad or negative that any ideological divisive says about us put it in doubt, I come from a country that was beautiful, where we all loved each other with respect, then everything changed with an iron dictatorship that said they came to give us rights and equality, it was all a cruel trap, we lost everything until the intrinsic right to freedom, I lost everything, family, friends and my right, so they deported me after keeping me a prisoner in their dungeons. Now they try to deceive us, but I know them very well... Wake up, get up, because you are free, never believe in hollow promises from the left.

Nikolas Asimos was a Greek composer and singer. Asimos was a very special case of a counter-culture artist, mostly because of his lifestyle. His behaviour and songs were often received as provocative by the general public.He was a person with strong political opinions. Ideologically, he could be categorised as an anarchist but he never accepted being put in a specific political ideology. After two failed attempts, he committed suicide by hanging on 17 March 1988 in his house which he used to call preparation area.
This song "Varethika" which means "I'm sick and tired" talks about the political system and how things will never change...
Madinat al-Zahra or Medina Azahara was a fortified palace-city on the western outskirts of Córdoba in present-day Spain. Its remains are a major archaeological site today. The city was built in the 10th century by Abd ar-Rahman III, a member of the Umayyad dynasty and the first caliph of Al-Andalus. It served as the capital of the Caliphate of Córdoba and its center of government.
The main reason for its construction was politico-ideological: Abd ar-Rahman III had declared himself "caliph" in 929 and the dignity of this new title required the establishment of a new city, a symbol of his power, imitating other eastern Caliphates. It sought to demonstrate his superiority over his great rivals, the Fatimid Caliphs of Ifriqiya in North Africa and the Abbasid Caliphs in Baghdad. The city was built near Córdoba, the existing capital of al-Andalus under Umayyad rule. Construction began in 936–940 and continued in multiple phases throughout his reign and the reign of his son, Al-Hakam II. The new city included ceremonial reception halls, a congregational mosque, administrative and government offices, aristocratic residences, gardens, a mint, workshops, barracks, service quarters, and baths. Water was supplied through aqueducts. After al-Hakam II's death, however, the city ceased to act as the center of government under the rule of Ibn Abi Amir al-Mansur. Between 1010 and 1013 it was sacked during a civil war and thereafter abandoned, with many of its materials re-used elsewhere.
The ruins of the city were excavated starting in 1911. Only about 10 hectares of the 112 hectares of the city have been excavated and partially restored, but this area includes the main palaces. A dedicated archeological museum, located on the edge of the site, was opened in 2009. On July 1, 2018, the site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the inscription name "Caliphate City of Medina Azahara".

75 years ago - at the 8th May 1945 - the World War II ended in Europe with the surrender of Nazi Germany and the victory of the Allied Forces. My father has been sixteen years those days. He received the conscription order to the German Army - the Reichswehr - shortly before the end of war. He decided to ignore it and hid himself until the American Army arrived to his village left of the river Rhine in the west of Germany. He passed away ten years ago after a long and - all in all - happy life.

The Eur is a district of Rome designed starting from 1935 to host the 1942 Universal Exposition in Rome (never held because of World War II). The design is the result of the work of numerous architects of the time technically coordinated by Marcello Piacentini. The EUR district was inspired by classical Roman urbanism enriched by elements of Italian rationalism, according to the fascist ideology of that time.

The National Theatre (Czech: Národní divadlo) in Prague is known as the alma mater of Czech opera, and as the national monument of Czech history and art.
The National Theatre belongs to the most important Czech cultural institutions, with a rich artistic tradition, which helped to preserve and develop the most important features of the nation–the Czech language and a sense for a Czech musical and dramatic way of thinking.
On 16 May 1868, the foundation stone was laid, and in November the foundations were completed. In 1875, the new building reached its full height and in 1877 the theatre was roofed over. As of 1873 there was an ongoing competition for the interior decoration of the building, the scenario of which had been elaborated by a special commission under the leadership of Sladkovský. On the one hand, the themes were in the spirit of the Neo-Renaissance concept of a classic building. On the other hand, they were inspired by the current enthusiasm for Slavonic mythology and the stories of the Manuscripts; both of these concepts were based on Josef Mánes' paintings and connected with the contemporary style of romantic landscape painting (also linked to Czech history). They provided the fundamental ideology guiding artistic expression, which today is described as the art of the generation of the National Theatre.

As advised by Sri Guru Amar Dass Ji (3rd Sikh Guru), Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji (4th Sikh Guru) started the digging of Amrit Sarovar (Holy Tank) of Sri Darbar Sahib in 1577 A.D., which was later on brick-lined by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji (5th Sikh Guru) on December 15, 1588 and He also started the construction of Sri Darbar Sahib. Sri Guru Granth Sahib (scripture of the Sikhs), after its compilation, was first installed at Sri Darbar Sahib on August 16, 1604 A.D. A devout Sikh, Baba Budha Ji was appointed its first Head Priest.

Built at a level lower than the surrounding land level, The Gurudwara teaches the lesson of egalitarianism and humility. Dear Stevens: Decades later, the problem remains unchanged. But perhaps the reality is a little sadder. Today, when children leave school, they don't stay in the squares, in public parks, or on the streets, playing, for example, soccer. They go straight home and shut themselves away in a world of surround sound and a giant screen. They play at killing soldiers, at commanding armies, they play soccer... they know how to dribble and control a digital soccer ball, very skillfully, with their index finger guiding a mouse. They do it infinitely better than when they dribble or pass a leather ball with their leg during recess at school. Today, when a child leaves school, they go straight home to immerse themselves inside the silicon chips of Silicon Valley, to play on a smartphone, an Alienware computer, or a PlayStation. If you suggest a game to a child, for example, playing "Hopscotch," they will most likely ask if there is an app for their smartphone or computer. If you tell him there's no app for this game, something might surprise you... if there's no app where you can play this game... he simply won't be interested in your game proposal... he won't be interested.

The lines we see on a map that demarcate one country from another, one region from another, are merely fictitious. If, according to the map, you are in China, for example, and you walk a few meters to where the map indicates you are in Mongolia, little will have changed. These are transitional zones where their richness lies precisely in their mixture of languages, customs, religions, ethnicities, and facial features. In the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the Uyghur ethnic group is the majority in this region of northwest China, and they also inhabit border areas such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The Uyghurs are the sum of a rich and complex mix of Turkic, Persian, and Indo-European cultures. The Uyghurs are, fundamentally, a Turkic-speaking people, meaning that their language belongs to the same language family as Turkish. They share a common ancestor with the Turks who migrated to Western Asia. The ancestors of the Uyghurs established a powerful empire, the Uyghur Khanate, in what is now Mongolia. After the fall of this empire, they migrated to the Tarim Basin, in present-day Xinjiang. However, it is perhaps the Persian influence that is most evident in their culture and in the modern Uyghur language. This influence is found in the names of people and, above all, in the names of places of Persian origin or with Persian influence in Xinjiang, as is the case with many historical oasis cities in the region, such as Kumul (Hami in Chinese). The border with Mongolia is located about 300 kilometers northwest of Kumul. It is important to note that the Uyghurs are predominantly Muslim, so you will not find Buddhist monks in most of the region; there is no significant Buddhist influence. Similarly, Mongolia is a deeply Buddhist country (Tibetan Buddhism), where you'll find little Muslim influence, only a few ethnic minorities like the Kazakhs. But it's in these border areas where you can find nomadic Buddhists or Buddhist monks. This mix is visible in people's faces and perhaps even more so in something common to Uyghurs and Mongolians: the presence of yurts. Very common among the nomadic Uyghurs, these dwellings vary slightly in Mongolia, not so much in their construction but in their name. They aren't called yurts, but rather "gers," a Latinization of the Mongolian word. And another thing they have in common is that you still see children playing football. Perhaps the bond uniting humanity isn't religion, political ideas, art, or culture. Perhaps the most widespread bond among humans is... football. Marx, in a context that must be understood, coined the phrase that "religion is the opium of the people." You may agree or disagree with this idea or with his ideas, but you must understand the context in which Marx wrote his ideological theses and his phrase... it was a context where football didn't exist. Perhaps, if Marx were alive today, he would change the content of his phrase and instead of saying that "religion is the opium of the people," he would change it to... "football is the opium of the people."

Created for the "Award Tree" group's "Red and White Fudge" challenge.
The title is a pun on Russian Suprematist artist, El Lissitsky's famous painting, "Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge", an abstract pro-Communist piece from the time of the Revolution.
I espouse no ideologies here of any stripe, but merely felt a "formal" connection to Lissitsky in the sharp shapes and outlines and the Red, Black & White colour scheme. His title came to mind and I thought it fun and ironically appropriate to wordplay on his title.
The original shot was taken of a sale window for one of the city's finest, most upscale china and dinnerware shops, William Ashley. So my piece here is intended to be both fun with the pun, but also a somewhat different political jab in the direction of consumerism. In the end though, it's about creating an abstracted piece from the everyday.

St. Vitus Cathedral is the main church of Prague. Situated on a hill Hradcany castle, it is the third church on this place (after the pre-Romanesque rotunda and Romanesque basilica), is the dominant feature of the historical and current panorama of the Czech capital.
Built in several phases, it was built over several centuries. Construction Began November 21, 1344 in the presence of King John of Luxembourg and his son Charles (future King Charles IV). The intention had rich ideological program. It is a shrine of the patron saints of the Czech Republic (Vitus, Wenceslas, Adalbert, Sigismund and John of Nepomuk). It is a historical church, coronation and burial of Czech kings. Over the so-called Golden Gate (adorned with a mosaic with a scene of the Last Judgment from the 14th century) are stored crown jewels of Czech kings and the crown of St. Wenceslas.

Katedra Świętych Wita, Wacława i Wojciecha to główny kościół Pragi. Usytuowany jest na wzgórzu zamkowym Hradczany, jest trzecim kościołem na tym miejscu (po przedromańskiej rotundzie i romańskiej bazylice), stanowi dominantę historycznej i obecnej panoramy stolicy Czech.
Budowana w kilku fazach, była budowana przez kilka stuleci. Budowę rozpoczęto 21 listopada 1344 w obecności króla Jana Luksemburskiego i jego syna Karola (przyszłego króla Karola IV). Zamierzenie posiadało bogaty program ideowy. Jest to sanktuarium świętych patronów czeskich (Wita, Wacława, Wojciecha, Zygmunta oraz Jana Nepomucena). Jest historycznym kościołem grzebalnym i koronacyjnym królów czeskich, ponad tzw. Złotą Bramą (ozdobioną mozaiką ze sceną Sądu Ostatecznego z XIV w.) przechowywane są insygnia koronacyjne królów czeskich, w tym korona św. Wacława.
Prace związane z budową katedry ostatecznie ukończono w roku 1929.

In 1887 the Canadian parliament, under the urging of the Canadian Pacific Railway vice-president, William Van Horne, and the federal land agent, William Pearce, created Rocky Mountains Park, later renamed Banff National Park.
Originally 647 square kilometres (250 sq mi), it was Canada's first national park and included part of the Bow River. Eventually the park grew to include the Bow Glacier, an outflow of the Wapta Icefield and the source of the Bow River.
The designation of the national park marked a turning point in the public's perception of the Bow River. The river began to be appreciated for its aesthetic value in addition to its industrial and agricultural uses. Officials of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the company who led the development of Banff, realized this element. When work began on a new luxury hotel in Banff in 1886–87, Van Horne personally redesigned and reoriented the plans so that the guests of the hotel would be able to see the vista of the Bow River. Many early postcards from Banff, as well as some current ones, prominently featured the Bow River.
From the 1920s forward, the National Parks of Canada began to focus on the economic benefits of accessible, mass marketable tourism. Changes included new highways and the creation of storage reservoirs for the water needed to sustain the burgeoning community. The Bow River was now seen both for its aesthetic qualities and for new utilitarian aspects.
By the 1950s Banff's raw sewage began to be discharged into the Bow River. Because of the self-purification powers of the cold, braided water, however, the Bow was incredibly effective as a natural sewage-treatment facility. Tourists and residents were often unaware of the transformation of the Bow River into a sewage system.
As Banff continued to grow, the river continued to digest the increased volume of sewage. This practice, however, began to touch an ideological nerve among the tourists and residents of Banff. Pouring raw sewage into one of the main attractions of the park polluted both the river and, more importantly, the image of Banff. There was also fear that continued reliance on the Bow as a natural sewer would either cap the development of Banff or eventually have great risk to public health. By the 1960s, the town built a modern sewage facility and stopped releasing untreated waters into the Bow. The river's aesthetic qualities had increasing priority in terms of effects of development within the borders of a National Park.

The Cities of The Domes, initially built to protect us from solar radiation that reached extreme values as well as the great millennial storms that devastated the Earth due to climate change were now used for the surveillance of all citizens.
The anarchist and revolutionary groups revolted against the new Cloud Governments of Autocratic ideology that kept the peoples under a regime of constant surveillance and censorship of social communications networks.
Everything was controlled and predicted through navigation records, consumption habits, social and movement patterns. Large corporations dictated the prices of our lives and who deserved to live or die.
Cults and Artistic or Mystical Orders were constantly monitored and, although tolerated, became increasingly uncomfortable as they often contradicted the State's Political Thought Standard and challenged the instituted social order.
We were, however, "The Others" that in the light we observed, recorded patterns and collected data. During the night we acted and met as brothers who swore to defend Freedom, Humanity and their mystical values, but mainly the most unprotected and persecuted.
They called us "The Guardians of the Night" but we would like to consider ourselves more like "The Guardians of the Soul". Our objective - To restore the old traditions, the old arts and crafts but mainly to restore the ancestral mystical balance of Man with Nature in Freedom and Tolerance towards all creeds, religions, sexual orientation and races.
And to achieve our goal, the two mystical orders that had existed in the past were recreated: The Militar Order of The Silver Orchid and the Order Of The Golden Orchid.
The first, in the Past was a Military Order of fearless and courageous warriors who protected the innocent against Tyrant Lords, their symbol a silver orchid that they wore always around their necks.
His mystic faith was governed by Dharyehl's Commandments, the death of usurpers and tyrants their primary mission ...
At the top command of the order of the warriors are Mystic and Powerful Guardians, Masters that moving in the shadow disguised among the multitude, versing various arts.
His ability to disguise was accompanied by very singular energies and powers, telepathic, intuitive mediumship and manipulation of the primordial elements without neglecting the study of the arts of body fighting, sword and bow.
Yet in their commandments is not permitted the use of firearms.
Their costume, although sometimes diverse, is marked by the simplicity, of a dark color, the use of covers and hoods, an ornamental cane hides an often deadly sword.
Body cleansing and fasting are often accompanied by prayers and meditation and are one of the daily duties of the Guardians of the Golden Orchid

A tribute to the many writers who have played an unimaginably important role in my life. Language is one of the most magical and delightful creations the human race has produced (I find it significant that certain religions and ideologies stress the power of the written and spoken word)--various arcane symbols rooted in ages gone by, filled with nuanced meanings, ever changing and evolving. Language enables us to share our ideas, feelings and emotions with other humans, a sort of primitive telepathy--a way of bridging the gap between our isolated conscious experiences, across time and space.
Without the magic of language, and the many writers who have dedicated themselves to the craft and mastery of it, our life here on Earth would be significantly impoverished.
So here's to the writers, living and dead; the wordsmiths who live in my heart and converse in my head.

The sliding retrieval and storing system in one of the many storerooms of the Depot of the Boymans Van Beuningen. It enables the museum to easily access paintings for research, restoration and display. The rooms are closed (partly glass) and climate-controlled - hence the reflections.
The construction made me remember the title of the faithful political program - Sliding panels - ('Schuivende panelen') of the Dutch Labour party (PvdA) that together with slogans like ‘Shedding of ideological feathers’ (Afschudden van de ideologische veren) assured the party’s slide into a situation nearing political insignificance.
This is number 16 of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen album.

I get goose bumps everytime I read these words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"...

Kampot City with a population of 42 thousand as of 2022 is the capital of the Kampot province. It is located 25 km northwest of Kep.
Kampot used to be synonymous with pepper.
It had been the principal port for shipping pepper cultivated in plantations in the surroundings during the French colonial period.
Pepper plantations continued to prosper for some time after the independence, but Kampot's importance dwindled with the development of deep-water port in nearby Sihanoukville in the 1950s.
Khmer Rouge obsessed with a Maoist ideology of self-sufficiency controlled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979; plantations for exporting pepper to Europe was definitely a no-no for the French educated intellectuals. They took over the plantations and converted them for rice cultivation. Pepper cultivation was completely terminated by the time Khmer Rouge kicked out of major cities in Cambodia in 1979.
Pepper plantation shifted to Phu Quoc island just across the water. Vietnam is now the No.1 producer and exporter of pepper in the world replacing Cambodia.
Pepper cultivation in Cambodia has revived recently but falls far short of the previous level. Cambodia is now the 6th producer and the 11th exporter.
UNESCO approved "Kampot Pepper" a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in 2016 like Champagne and Parma Ham. I hope it would rejuvenate the pepper cultivation in Kampot.
The majority of these people were only 18-23 years old. Almost children. Was it really worth to sacrifice them on the altar of ideologies? I do hope we already learnt the lession and this cannot be happening again... 😥

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
