Well, an identity photoshoot. I wanted to include fake symmetry and silent sounds. Tell me what you think.

Some alleyway in Venice. Names of all the occupants in the residence. Contrast and saturation increased by a significant amount.

Melissa, an old friend from highschool, came over and we bought four cartons of strawberries and melted milk chocolate to dip it into. After stuffing our little stomach’s with dozens of strawberries we decided to play photoshoot! We played off the theme “Identity Crisis” which I think made a lovely spread.

First draft of my Digital Identity's Mindmap

The Client

Gaiosofia Natural Products commissioned us to design their visual identity including their label and website. Gaiosofia was founded by people with love and faith to everything natural, harmonic, traditional, healthy. Wanting to highlight that quality is more valuable than quantity, Gaiosofia search for pure, natural and traditional products, in which there is the least human intervention possible. The company is driven by the theories of natural farming (an ecological agriculture practice institutionalized by Japanese farmer and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka).

The Concept

It was decided to lead the design through the central philosophy of the company that pass on to their products.

Our design therefore combines symbols of nature, structured so as to subscribe and disclose the verbal and theoretical values of the company.

Initially, the circular shape of the Earth reflects the periodic nature of seasons, thus symbolizing the wise function of nature itself. Dividing the circle into two equal parts we underline the harmony, between nature and the people living in balance with their environement. The lower semicircle is closed, in order to suggest the compact nature of the soil and the solid beliefs of the company. Nature feeds the roots of trees and plants with the required for their physical development components. A consequence of this physical supply are the fruits and derivatives which are symbolized by the leaves, which embrace the open semicircle.

The final symbol generates three different levels of Gaia: soil, earth and air. Each separate notation engage together to reflect harmoniously the company values and create a simple but strong identity.

The head of Marketing for Identity Group asked me to take a couple of shots of the new sign in front of the complex for use on the company website. While the above image didn't make the cut, I liked it anyway.

strobist: 2 Vivitar 285s, positioned below the sign and pointing at the bottom corners, full power, bare. Flashes triggered via Cybersyncs. A B&W CPL was used.

Not being fully aware of it myself at first, I have recently started covering parts of the model’s face in my portraits. The past couple of months I have been thinking about self-censorship, what to showcase and what to keep private, what to say out loud and what to keep in my own head. Both my sisters model for me a lot (I am very fortunate to be graced with a younger and an older gorgeous sister besides two brothers, so why not take advantage of this). Uploading my work on the internet has always given me mixed feelings. Sure, I want to showcase my photographs and share my art with other people, but at the same time I feel very protective over my sisters and fear that the photographs might be shared or used in inappropriate ways. That’s a risk that everyone participating on the internet has to face. The cover-up portraits attempt to let them keep some of their identity. It’s a conscious choice not to share everything with the audience. To leave something to the imagination and force the viewer to put some thought into it.

This project explores the idea of identity. what makes me, me? do all these things mean anything when they’re separated from the larger picture? does the meaning change when put into context? & what does gender mean to me?

Identity theft takes place when somebody uses your personally identifying information, such as your name, Social Security number, or your credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud and other crimes.

The US government estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen every year. In fact, you or someone you know may have experienced some form of identity theft.

This crime takes different forms. Identity thieves may rent a house, get a credit card, or establish a telephone number using your details. You may not find out about the crimes until you check your credit card statement and notice charges you did not make - or until you’re contacted by a debt collection agency.

Identity theft is very serious. While some identity theft victims can resolve their problems quickly, others spend hundreds of dollars and a lot of time attempting to repair the damage done to their good name and credit history.

Some consumers victimized by identity theft may lose out on job opportunities, or be denied bank loans for school, housing or cars because of the negative data on their credit reports. In rare cases, they may even be arrested for crimes they did not commit.

Established in 2008, Belhams is a distributor of home products sourced from Asia and around the world. Selling home products that are natural and unique, Belhams needed a corporate identity that will bring out these qualities. LEAP conceptualised the company logo, inspired by branches and fresh leaves.

This represented Belham’s core, which is bringing ideas and products for a perfect home. the use of brown and lime green as logo colors were perfect in capturing the warmth and naturalness of the company’s home wares.

this quote by Robert Millar in Jan Conradi's book on Unimark may sound a bit dated forty years later, but there is an interesting analogy on identity in it. i've used the analogy of a logo (and possibly corporate color) being a cornerstone to build an edifice upon; you invite people into this world. you may change the structure / aesthetic with time and audiences, but how you are visually identified requires constants. this quote does a better job explaining the internal and external nature of identities, even if the family and house idea are a little quaint today.

finally got some puffin shots.. unfortunately couldn't get much closer than this but it was great to see him all the same.. thought this shot was a bit funny as the poor puffin seems a bit confused surrounded by all the guillemots

i ran into a group of teeange punks on one of munich's largest public transport stations. i talked to them for a while and asked for portraits. i was with them for about half an hour shooting, talking, laughing, bit flirting to make those smile who had these sad faces lost children have ... until two security guys showed up for an identity check and questioning which ended with a dismissal for the whole group. i was able to take two shots of the questioning scene and then had been stopped by a serious warning.

it is a ritual. the identity check is followed by questioning and dismissal. that happens almost every day the kids told me with faces that said "i don't care" and "i really don't know why" at the same time. just for the record: these kids did not disturb anybody, the hadn't been in the way, the music player they had was silent enough to not being noticed at all, they didn't drink any alcohol. their only fault was being young and looking different from the uniformity of others; and munich is the mother ship for those who like uniforms. i don't know any other german city people are more obedient to officials and academic titles, i tell you. and i don't know any other german city that is so crowded with people in uniforms, whether it be police, public transport guards, armed forces or poshy youngsters with lv bags.
