Mary - Identity V @hanaxcos

Who I am, when I'm thinking west of the Date Line. Not when I'm Seán na Amadán.

BTW: Intended for pronounciation according to the standards of 普通话 ("Putonghua").

This Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a "newbie" to our garden. I know this because of the plumpness & outstanding white throat & breast. I was fooled at first in thinking it was a female, but as I watched (series of photos) a male approach "her," the new hummer revealed "his" gorget markings. After looking it up, I found out that first year males often look like females, but have the soft lines & spots in their neck, which they will flash on occasion.

A relatively short BNSF Savanna to Eola local heads east climbing the slight grade out of Milledgeville, Illinois on the BNSF Aurora subdivision. This photo was taken from an overpass that was recently re-opened this spring replacing an old wooden bridge. If you notice the door is from a newer locomotive.

The BNSF 5005 (GE C44-9W) has had quite the identity crisis ever since the crash. Apparently back on January 30, 2009 this locomotive struck a car-carrier semi-truck loaded with vehicles. A Cadillac was mounted on the front porch of the locomotive damaging the door.

A spare door was located from a newer schemed locomotive, so thus the identity crisis.

Here’s a link to a short article with an amazing photo from the 2009 crash - mynorthwest.com/?nid=11&sid=129904

How The Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics

Author has some interesting things to say about how the need for identity and thus the many tribes of identity politics are a result of people feeling lost due to the weakening ties of family. The introduction talks about the myth of wolves traveling alone or in packs and how this was the erroneous conclusion of studying wolves in captivity that were taken away from their family groupings of parents and extended family members. Made me wonder if Americans are animals in captivity separated from their parents at 18 by modern conventions of industrialized society.

She sources this atomization of society to the sexual revolution for introducing casual sex while not actually reducing unwanted pregnancies once the Pill was introduced. Globalization too made people feel anonymous in a sea of indifference. She quotes a number of books from the ‘90s warning of this trend. “The triumph of identity politics resulted in intellectual parochialism”. Tod Gitlin in “The Twilight of Common Dreams: Why America is Wracked by Culture Wars. From Arthur M. Schlessinger Jr. notes that the separatism of such politics “nourishes prejudices, magnifies differences and stirs antagonisms” thereby “undermining a common identity”. In 2012 The Victims Revolution: The Rise of Identity Politics and the Closing of the Liberal Mind by Bruce Bawer.

All these accounts describing the principle of free speech becoming mass hysteria on campuses nationwide. Pile on social media to magnify this effect. She relates the refrain of human “tribalism” as a base cause to the misreading of wolf packs. Her treatise examines the steps towards the atomization of the family beginning with an absent father, divorce creating split identity in children, fewer children and more only children so familiarity with the opposite sex becomes rare. Technology producing parentless children through sperm donors. Less family resulting in loneliness in old age. And finally the loss of church as a community unifier, not to mention God.

The concept of cultural appropriation creating more narcissistic territorial marking. Fewer family members sticking up for women and the blurring of lines between predator and protector where men are concerned result in a survival instinct to mark all men as dangerous. Women take on male dress and male characteristics as camouflage. She also noted that fathers who had only one girl child might train her to be his son and companion much like my father. Women feel they must perform more like me to succeed in the world.

She makes the point that the “MeToo” movement exposed the assumption by young women that men would respect their boundaries and not act like men. While no where were there women to warn her not to put herself in harms way I.e. by going into his hotel room at a conference. Pornography and fewer opposite sex, non-sexual friends add up to less pool of information about the other sex.

She notes that identarians often turn on each other. True enough.

At the end are essays by other authors responding to her treatise. Rod Dreher talks about the fall of Rome also being rooted in the atomization of family and the descent into the narcissism of the self. He notes how easy it is to lose knowledge especially how to do things including how to create and sustain a family. Mark Lilla points out that identity politics offers a way for people, who are already too deep into the self, to connect with others who they perceive to be similar. He also notes that the author attributes the break up of the family while neglecting the impact of capitalism in nurturing individualism. Peter Thiel notes that when a society agrees that the future will be worse the inmates tend to substitute leisure for work that would invest in such a future.

Like other women writers getting noticed for condemning the sexual revolution, one of which I’ve reviewed already, this is a position that appeals most to conservatist’s views with little to offer in the way of solutions. I’m more inclined to point the finger at capitalism and the despair created by the endless exploitation of women as a resource for reproductive labor and emotional care taking and the environment to be endlessly mined and polluted as well as the constant selling of personal products to individuals. Humans have the capacity to take care of things and make sacrifices for others. I’d be more inclined to nurture a non-narcissistic, earth based movement to heal some part of the planet. A mission based identity. At any rate I have decommissioned any empathy for victim leaning persons complaining of being ill treated while taking cover in one of the sacred identities of identity politics.

6 x title sequences (bespoke per episode)

6 x Break Bumpers

MGFX Studio have completed the opening titles for "Identity" a major new drama on ITV. Starring Aiden Gillen from The Wire and Keeley Hawes from Ashes to Ashes as well as a host of other well known cast members, this new venture for ITV looks set to be a big hit. Producer Warwick Hewett says ‘Matt (Curtis of AP Design) approached us to provided the titles for this production. We jumped at the chance; Matt always brings us good work and is an excellent client to work with so we sat down and worked a few things out before developing the idea with our MGFX department.”

The boards were very clean and graphical; a stylised city scape transitioning into a more grungy segment containing the title cards which brought in elements like DNA and ID cards to tie in with the focus of the programme. As the idea developed though the entire sequence became more and more grungy, with more and more layers being added to give a much edgier feel. Lead Animator Matt Lawrence says “As we developed the titles they grew in scale and depth. The initial renders looked too clinical so we added more layers and shash to take it to a seedier level, more in keeping with the concept of the programme of stolen identities and broken lives.”

Initially the whole of the opening city sequence was a 3D build but the first two shots were later substituted for live action plates to give a more textured real feel to the titles. The remaining City shot that transitions from Cinema 4D to After Effects was textured with over 80 different windows of footage to represent the “Big Brother” society we live in today. The transition from 3D into the rest of the sequence was achieved by morphing the ‘Hero’ buildings windows into the squares of a gene map image. Using scans of forged passports, personal letters and various sourced footage the rest of the sequence was constructed. Lots of layers, fast cuts and a few bespoke animations provided the backdrop for the title cards which wiped off as if being erased from existence. “It was a lot of work, but as ever we pulled through and ended up with a great looking sequence for the programme that really ties into its theme. It made a nice change for me as well as I usually side on the cleaner more stripped back graphics and this was a lot more deconstructed and complex, a bit like my After Effects build ended up!
