Canal icebreaker. The idea was that a team of four or five would stand on the wooden platform and rock the boat back and forward while the horse pulled it along. With a lot of effort and a little time it was possible to clear a path through frozen canals for the boats that followed behind.

The Finnish harbour icebreaker Turso has an interesting story. She was built in Finland and began her service there in 1944.
But already in 1945 she was handed over to the Soviet Union as a part of war reparations.
A group of Finns managed to buy her back in 2004, and began extensive restoration.

Eastwind was heavily armed for an icebreaker due to her design being crafted during World War II.
In October 1960, as part of Operation Deep Freeze, she departed Boston, passed through the Panama Canal, crossed the Pacific, visited New Zealand and McMurdo sound. Leaving Antarctica, she travelled the Indian Ocean, came through the Suez Canal, crossed the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to return home in May 1961. This tour made the Eastwind the first cutter ever to circumnavigate the globe.
Captain R.D. Schmidtman, USCG commanded the vessel in 1960, and Captain Joseph Naab, Jr., USCG commanded her during 1961 and 1962. Two mountains in Antarctica, Mount Schmidtman and Mount Naab, were named after her captains during this period.
In 1966 she left Boston MA in September for Operation Deep Freeze '67' returned April 1967. Captain William Benkert, Commanding.

At the camera club this evening we experimented with triggering flash using sound and light beams. Here the sound of the hammer breaking the ice cube was used to trigger the flash.

Icebreaker Kuna lying in the river Warta at Gorzow Wielkopolski.
If i got the story of the captain right the Kuna is supposed to be the first icebreaker in Europe.
It is still functional and you can make wonderfull boattrips on Saturday en Sunday during the summer.
scanned with Nikon Coolscan IV at 2900dpi.
I first saw one of these jerseys last spring and have lusted after it since then. There were three problems with the jersey last year that kept me from buying one (well, two problems and a sizing issue); first, they were hideously expensive, secondly, they had back pockets (I was still wearing +4s last year), and thirdly they're a womens jersey.
Well, at least for the summer I've taken to wearing tights, so back pockets are the only pockets I've got. And these things have been going on deeper and deeper sale, so that makes them more appealing, and thirdly the XL size is almost a complete fit for me, with the notable exception of the hips, which are a little too big and may need to be hemmed in a little.
I now have a cloud chamber jersey of my very own. I am pleased.
