This is Philorine, a public health nurse who drove 45 minutes from Ol Tukai Lodge to our Elewana Tortilis Camp on the other side of Amboseli National Park to care for me when I went to bed for 24 hours with gastroenteritis. Later she checked on me several times until she was satisfied that I was well. A wonderful young professional; I hope she has a successful future. ©2025 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com

It was a cold one, frost on this log that some enterprising folks had tried to push it into the lake possibly, or something deliberate to help wildlife walk out of the lake? But makes an interesting feature in the foreground.
This location is twenty miles from the centre of London but has been used in so many TV and films over the years as it only 2-3 miles from Pinewood Studios.
The lake is frozen here but you can walk round three quarters of it. The last quarter has the grounds of The Langley Hotel ( 5* and quite expensive) which is out of bounds unless you are staying at the hotel.

This was my first encounter with the up-and-coming super-tusker Esau, a very affable elephant. At 33, he's still only a tusker, and an impressive one at that, and if he can be kept safe from poachers and is able to hit his 40s and 50s, he'll join the ranks of such elephantine legends as Tim and Craig and Tolstoy. In the meantime, he enjoys the grass on the plains of Amboseli National in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.
A few words about feeding
Note how Esau will kick up divots of grass and then shake them free of dirt before eating them. Also note that after he curls his trunk about a tuft of pulled grass he will shake the dirt off before putting it in his mouth. Getting rid of the dirt first is a life-prolonging tactic because it keeps his teeth from being ground down prematurely. Once an elephant loses its teeth and no longer can grind food, it will starve and die. This happens to all elephants in old age eventually, but the ones that know how to eat properly will live longer.
What is a tusker? What is a super-tusker?
A tusker is an elephant male around the age of 30 with tusks weighing about 50 pounds each. (There can be females with huge tusks, but they are not called tuskers but "iconic females.") A super-tusker is in his 40s or 50s with tusks weighing 100 pounds each and often reaching the ground. Elephants' tusks always are growing, and a male can sire children into his 50s.
That thing around his neck
What is that thing around Esau's neck? It's a tracking collar. It's not at all fashionable but it helps keep him alive by warning would-be poachers that he is being watched. Tuskers are always in danger of being killed for their tusks, and they're becoming more and more rare, depleting the gene pool of these giants. ©2025 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com
And there's plenty of Esau to see, isn't there? Here Mount Kilimanjaro is in the background. Up-and-coming super-tusker Esau, a very affable elephant. Only a small or little amount of light illuminates this dark place.
One of my new pictures, a simple and casual picture of the interior of a train station.
I went for heavier post-processing for this picture, as it was taken in less than ideal conditions.

University of Western Australia (UWA) is a public research university in the Australian state of Western Australia. The university's main campus is in Crawley, a suburb in the City of Perth local government area. UWA was established in 1911 by an act of the Parliament of Western Australia.
UWA is the oldest university in Western Australia (WA) and the sixth-oldest in Australia. It is classed as one of the "sandstone universities", an informal designation given to the oldest university in each state.
UWA is a member of the Group of Eight, which consists of the eight most research-intensive and best-ranked Australian universities. UWA is also a member of the international Matariki Network of Universities.
UWA is ranked in the world's top 200 universities, according to several highly respected publications. Another defining characteristic of UWA is that it has retained its convocation as an integral part of its governance structure. All UWA graduates are automatically lifelong members of the university through convocation, which grants them the right to attend annual general meetings, elect two members of the university senate, and review any changes to university legislation.
UWA graduates include Prime Minister of Australia Bob Hawke, five justices of the High Court of Australia (including Chief Justice Robert French, now Chancellor), Governor of the Reserve Bank H. C. Coombs, various federal cabinet ministers, and seven of Western Australia's eight most recent premiers. In 2018 alumnus Akshay Venkatesh received the Fields Medal. As of 2021, the university had produced 106 Rhodes Scholars. Two members of the UWA faculty, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, won Nobel Prizes as a result of research at the university.
It is quite hard to make out this amazing staircase in the Helsinki Central Library.
It is like two staircases going down opposite each other, beautiful construction with wooded hand rails.
( I made the image black and white in order to gain more detail from the composition.)
There must have been a very innovative group of architects that put this building together - thinking outside the box all the time.

As the sun has finally set, it produces a faint light.
Combined with the night sky, it turned the clouds crimson red.
