The word 'karst' is the geological term used for these limestone cliffs, used here in its true sense and as a play on the word 'cast', meaning cause light or shadow to appear on a surface, as on the surface of the water here.

On Easter Sunday me, Tracey, Herb, and two friends went to Delamere forest in Cheshire; about 60 miles from us.

We had a beautiful 3.8 mile walk through the beautiful forest before we enjoyed a picnic back at the car.

A lovely day it was too.

At Watergrove reservoir

Yesterday had a poor weather forecast of a grey damp day. Sure, it started off like that but by lunchtime it was beautiful.

Me, Tracey, & Herb went for a walk around a reservoir that we’d never been to before. Watergrove reservoir at Wardle near Rochdale.

It was a really lovely walk. The 2.39 mile walk took us 1hr 13mins, with Herb sniffing plenty along the way and us taking in the scenery.

The reservoir has an interesting back story too…

It turned out nice yesterday! ️

Me and Herb had a walk around Hollingworth lake yesterday. It’s just a 2.2 mile walk.

… but the car park was much closer 😄

Yesterday we visited the farmers’ market, with family, at Hoghton Tower, we then enjoyed a pre-booked afternoon tea. A very nice day it was, except the weather didn’t cooperate.

Our afternoon tea was booked for 2.00pm, by 1.00pm it was raining and cold. My sister in law asked if we’d be able to have our afternoon tea earlier than booked. They were very cooperative, and our large circular table for 8 people was already reserved.

The afternoon tea was lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We made a couple of purchases at the market too… two beautiful Norwegian blankets. Mine has a design with stags on it, and Tracey’s has horses. Tracey also bought some honey.

When we came out of the afternoon tea all the stalls at the market had packed up and left.

We’ve decided not to plant any flowers or veg in the raised beds this year.

A young border collie thinks that they’re his play things, cool resting areas, and agility course.

We can wait.

This is the first time in a number of years that me and Tracey have walked around this local reservoir.

From about 2005 - 2010 we walked around it regularly, for me almost daily. I once even fell in it when acting the goat with our Maremma Sheepdog, Kundzia, that we had then.

After around 2010 they stopped allowing access for dogs. For this reason Sam and Patches never went on this 2 mile walk.

It’s pronounced Bark-is-land not Bark-island… the locals will scoff at you for calling it Bark-island.

At Quarry bank mill

Today we visited the National trust properties and gardens at Quarry bank mill, Wilmslow.

It didn’t rain, which was a real bonus; and there were some wonderful buildings to see.

Tracey and our friends had a tour of one of the houses… meanwhile Herb and I had a good walk back to the car for some water.

A really interesting place …

Great workmanship by the two lads that made it.

More expensive (in terms of hours spent making it), well done to whoever decided to have it done this way, especially when it’s often a race to the bottom for spending.

A friendly boy 😀

Yesterday we went to visit Tracey’s friend in the village of Blacko (Blacko is the next village to Barrowford… my home town).

She has a lot of animals… 3 Alpacas, Donkeys, miniature donkeys, horses, and Valais blacknose sheep.

The Alpacas were quite interested in Herb. Herb was more interested in them when there was a fence between them. The three alpacas had recently been sheared and their wool sent off (to be mixed with another wool) to Scotland, and hopefully made into a jumper.

Apparently, when you get alpacas you get three of them!!

As he was sat next to me on the couch.

If we’re hanging washing on the line outside, Herb will steal items and run off with them … as pups do; So we have to leave him in the house… whereby he sits on the couch and watches us out of the window… he stays there until we return indoors.

On Saturday me, Tracey, and Herb walked the Coppermine trail at Almwch.

A 2.40 mile circular walk.

We tried to work out how many times we’ve done this walk… we didn’t know.

But now four of our dogs have walked this with us… Kundzia, Sam & Patches, and now Herb.

Me and Herb pass this wall regularly.

It is a beautiful example of an old dry stone wall. You’re able to walk on both sides of the wall, which we usually end up doing. Dogs must be kept on a lead on this side of the wall, there can from time to time be sheep in the field.

Mid morning

Me and Herb did a couple of laps around this reservoir on Wednesday morning.

3.88 miles from the car park and round a couple of times. It’s just under a half a mile walk from the car park to the reservoir… through a wooded area. It’s a nice hike.

A nice 3.5 mile walk.

Yesterday me and Herb had a walk around this body of water, along with three good friends and former work colleagues… George, Mick, and Scott.

I’m in regular contact with each of them but hadn’t seen each one for long enough. It was good to catch up… anyway another walk is being organised 😄

I took this shot from the car parking area above Scammonden. You can see the M62 motorway to the right of the photograph.

We weren’t allowed through the gates

The owners live in at least part of it.

Apparently every now and then it’s open to visitors.

A woman in town told us that “us peasants aren’t allowed in”. I detected a bit of animosity.

I took the shot with my hands through the wrought iron gates.

There’s a notice on the gates telling deliveries to phone one of two numbers, and they’ll come out and open the gates.

A beautiful castle from what I could see.

We like the walk around it

The Hollingworth lake walk is becoming quite a regular one for Herb and me.

Something like a 12 mile drive from home, and £2 to park the car for 2 - 4 hours.

Tend to meet some friendly people (and dogs) on the way round.

Makes for an enjoyable afternoon out.

Enjoy this 1.0-mile loop trail near Galena, Illinois. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 33 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking and walking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.
