One million reasons to LOVE Vancouver

by miguel boccanegra :)

| Port Mann Bridge |

architect: CBA Engineering Ltd

in coquitlam city which is part of the greater Vancouver area

| photo blurb | | no.108 |

The Port Mann Bridge is a 10-lane cable-stayed bridge that opened to traffic in 2012. It is currently the second longest cable-stayed bridge in North America and was the widest bridge in the world until the opening of the new Bay Bridge in California. The new bridge replaced a steel arch bridge that spanned the Fraser River, connecting Surrey to Coquitlam in British Columbia near Vancouver.

Queen Elizabeth Park, Vancouver’s horticultural jewel, is a major draw for floral display enthusiasts and view seekers. At 152 metres above sea level, it’s the highest point in Vancouver and makes for spectacular views of the park, city, and mountains on the North Shore.

The 52-hectare park is home to the stunning Bloedel Conservatory, quarry garden, the arboretum with its collection of exotic and native trees, sculptures and diverse recreational offerings such as tennis, lawn bowling and pitch & putt.

This bronze statue by sculptor J. Steward Johnson Jr. is a popular fixture at this scenic lookout atop the highest point in Queen Elizabeth Park. Visitors to the Park pose with the three figures, the couple and the older lady fixing her hair, or the photographer - with the mountains in the background, it is hard to miss this interesting and panoramic photo opportunity.

We crashed the Denny's party last night (yes, like the restaurant) where they debuted their new fall menu. Delicious little cheesecake milkshakes, little slider burgers, nachos with bacon, mini pancake desert things and Free Beers (which, sadly, did not make the 08 menu)... anyway, kind of the bestest party ever.

metro Vancouver

| photo blurb | | no.87 |

These eighteen enormous, headless cast iron figures by Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz appear to be walking aimlessly without the guidance of reason or sight. The figures appear menacing, as they are robotic, ancient and without heads. The figures were identically cast, but later given subtle individual identities through various surface treatments. The sombre tone and sheer weight of the figures make reference to both time and loss. This monumental sculpture is a Legacy piece from the 2005-2007 Vancouver Biennale.

Walking Figures is part of a group of 106 figures cast simultaneously in her studio in Poland.

As the birthplace of Vancouver, Gastown was initially a settlement that sprung up around a tavern founded in 1867 by sailor and gold prospector John "Gassy Jack" Deighton. This historic district's cobblestone streets are lined with Victorian buildings that today house everything from souvenir shops and First Nations galleries to stylish clothing boutiques. With informational plaques placed strategically along the street to tell the history behind various buildings and landmarks, Gastown is an excellent area for a walking tour.
