Paddy is 12 years old and came in for a check up and to discuss his sudden abnormal aggressive behavior targeting his canine housemate. His thyroid was upper limit of normal and we suspect he may be developing a hyperthyroidism. <3
#Thyroid disorders are broadly classified into two types & most people are unaware of the disease until too late. Are you #hypothyroid or #hyperthyroid? #KnowYourSymptoms here:
Sunny has to take medicine twice a day for her hyperthyroidism. While I'm holding her jaws shut I sneak in some extra hugs.
is a very good "little BabaCat" as she is so very patient getting her medications and is now eating her renal diet food as well!
about to give a #sickcat her #hyperthyroid #medicine with a #gasmask on... and looking like a #pharmaceutical dealer from the #nationalgeographic channel.
Cuffy's had kidney disease for several years now, and it's been well controlled. We did blood work last week, and learned that his kidney levels are great, but that he's developed hyperthyroidism. Apparently they often go together, and the hyperthyroidism is no doubt artificially suppressing his kidney levels.
He's on medication now to adjust the thyroid, and we expect his creatinine and BUN to rise as his thyroid levels even out. That'll be about a month, and then we'll probably do the I-131 treatment and turn him temporarily into a radioactive kitty.
Bobbie is a dilute calico (Manx, rumpy). The term rumpy means that she has no tail at all. Bobbie is still playful. She was finally diagnosed as hyperthyroid in February of this year. At least 2 tests were done before the test indicated a problem. By that time she had lost considerable weight. Even though she is on thyroid medication to suppress the over production of thyroid she has not gained any weight. Her thyroid level is still not okay.
Morticia had a bad spell this morning, to do with hyperthyroid and possibly kidney issues. We get more test results tomorrow. Send her good thoughts, and Max as well since we both - but Max especially - are very worried and sad about our aging kitty baby.
This is the 'heatlamp' sickbed I made for Morty behind my computer monitor; she loves the Bluesbuster full spectrum bulb in my desklamp. She has lost so much weight (she is only 5.4 lbs now) that she is attracted to any heat source.
Puss came in for a checkup. She is still on her hypethyroid medication. She has gained more weight (indicating the treatment is working).
Bebe had her fur dematted today. She has hyperthyroidism and arthritis. Her fur became so matted that she needed to be put under general anesthetic to have her fur dematted. This is her after her op!
Her face is just so beautiful <3

Steely came in to discuss his ravenous appetite and weight loss. We were suspicious of hyperthyroidism. :-)

Thyroid conditions can be easily managed in day-to-day life with the right medications and hormone therapy. However, the risks of low or high thyroid hormone levels become much more apparent during pregnancy.
The thyroid is an organ located in the front of the neck that releases hormones to regulate the metabolism (the way the body uses energy), heart and nervous system, weight, body temperature, and many other processes in the body. The thyroid diseases like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are relatively common in pregnancy and important to treat.

Performing these tests helps rule out any other causes of the behavioral changes.
CBC is usually within normal limits (WNL). About 50% of hyperthyroid cats have mild erythrocytosis. This is due to the thyroid hormone producing excessive erythropoietin (Stortz, et al., 2004).
Blood chemistries will show an increase in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The increase in these values could occur from malnutrition, congestive heart failure, or the thyroid hormone causing liver toxicity (Stortz, et al., 2004).

Some cats may experience decreased thyroid levels after radioactive-iodine treatment. If this is occurs and the patient has the clinical signs of hypothyroidism (lethargy, obesity, and poor hair coat), then thyroid-hormone supplementation may be required.

Clients should be informed of both the expense, the length of the hospital stay, and the fact that they will not be able to visit their cat while hospitalized. This is because the cat is radioactive and the hospital cannot risk exposure to visitors.

Day 163-Today was Jake's turn to visit the vet and get some overdue bloodwork on him to check his thyroid status.
