Performing these tests helps rule out any other causes of the behavioral changes.

CBC is usually within normal limits (WNL). About 50% of hyperthyroid cats have mild erythrocytosis. This is due to the thyroid hormone producing excessive erythropoietin (Stortz, et al., 2004).

 

Blood chemistries will show an increase in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The increase in these values could occur from malnutrition, congestive heart failure, or the thyroid hormone causing liver toxicity (Stortz, et al., 2004).
