While some cities around here have only closed playgrounds and sports facilities at their parks, Manhattan Beach has closed their parks outright. Polliwog Park has a large pond year-round that attracts ducks, geese, coots, herons and more, plus the local gulls and pigeons that wander by. But the park has been literally wrapped in caution tape for a month, and the ducks that normally stay in and around the pond have come out to the edges by the sidewalks -- where people can still walk by and feed them.

This is the first year I've ever had trouble parking at the con. Fortunately the Pike parking structure isn't too far away, but it was more expensive.
I don't know if they're supposed to, but they really reminded me of the 12 Monkeys stencils.

So is this more along the lines of viral marketing, or alternate-reality marketing?
They had "for humans only" posters up all over last year, but no one had a clue what it was about.
The critter from Jabba the Hutt's palace is at least partly animated: the mouth opens and closes, but I'm not sure what else does.
At the DC Booth. I didn't notice how blurry this was until after I started the upload. Note to self: Check all photos at full zoom instead of just thumbnails.
Arriving at Long Beach Comic Con 2018. This walkway is new, and connects the outside area on the Pine side of the convention center to the fountain terrace in front of the theater.

The kelp stalks are called stipes and the root like structures holdfasts. Holdfasts attach to rocky seabeds, rocks, pebbles and stipes or holdfasts of other algae.

I don't remember the lagoon looking quite so scuzzy before. Must be a side effect of drought measures.
A dark Lichen found growing on a rock at Bragg Creek Provincial Park on 20th August. My Lichen photos are, no doubt, of very little interest to most of you, but I do want to include them in my Fungi, Lichen and Slime Molds Sets : ) Some lichens are glorious colours, but others, like this one, are dark and rather unappealing to those who don't study them.
I think this is Umbilicaria hyperborea, 'Blistered Rock Tripe' - Doug Waylett has a similar photo on his photostream, with this ID.

"We Are Dead" board game where you play zombies trying to eat/turn the humans trapped in a shopping mall. Kickstarter info.
I took this photo as a Shortpacked! in-joke, but if you look to the left of the truck, you can see a couple dressed as Drusilla and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and someone taking their picture.
At Comic-Con International ← Check out my write-ups.
About an hour(?) into the DC Editorial presentation, Jim Lee (new Co-Publisher of DC Comics) made his way into the Q&A line to set up some questions...and show off his new iPad, which he'd picked up that morning.
All the people leaving after Star Trek. It made it really easy to get in for "Nine."
As one of the crowd control people said, "There's plenty of room, they all left after Star Trek because they're crazy."
This book has quickly become one of my favorites, so when I found out there was a signing with the writer, artist, and inker, I had to go.
