Europe, The Nethelands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Daken Dagen 2022, Bijenkorf roof, Innovative agriculture, People (slightly cut)
One of the goals od the Rotterdam Dakendagen (Roof days) is to make people aware of the many new uses flat roofs can have.
One of these uses is shown here – hydroponic agriculture. It’s not soil based. On the bottom of the tubing is a thin layer of growing media like coconut coir, vermiculite or perlite. Via a drip system water and nutrients are pumped in. The principle is to remove as many barriers as possible between a plant’s root system and the water, oxygen, and nutrients it needs.
The main benefit of hydroponic agriculture is the greatly increased growth rate of most plants. It’s not uncommon for a plant to grow at least 20% faster than in soil. And plants will typically yield at least 25% more than their soil-based counterparts.
In the BG are the Lijnbaan flats, Calypso and a hotel whose name shall not be mentioned.

I thought I'd try flipping this sky-ward aspen view, seeing as how the bare branches remind me of plant roots. I added a polished stone filter in Corel Paintshop to exaggerate the sky-as-water effect.

Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, which is a method of growing plants without soil, by instead using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Terrestrial plants may be grown with only their roots exposed to the nutritious liquid, or the roots may be physically supported by an inert medium such as perlite, gravel, or other substrates.

I went with a sci-fi setting yet again, and loved getting to use the decorated Alpha Team canopies and a few constraction elements which I’ve had for quite some time now. The scene uses 101 parts.

In the future a new earth-like planet - named Ademis - is discovered. A group of people with different skills is sent to Ademis to live there and examine the pre-conditions for a larger colony to be established.
This has been a fun learning experience - the tiny tomatoes are very tasty. I started some mini watermelon seeds in the set up. The little gherkin cucumbers are coming along.
Built for Space Jam 2019's lab category. Part of a larger research facility on Delta Prime, the hydroponics research facility gets lots of attention. If life is to be sustainable, the scientists stationed here need to find a way to get plants to grow on alien worlds.

I was surprised to see these cuttings rooted in a glass of water at Carondelet's St. Joseph Hospital Outpatient Rehab Facility.
Carondelet Hospital was founded by the Catholic Carondelet Order of Nuns. The receptionist said nothing ever grows for her, but these cuttings were given to her by a nun, and are growing!!

We have a pair of Mallard that have adopted our front garden as a suitable place for making a nest. At the moment, they spend a lot of time at the ground feeders and in the water tray provided for bathing and drinking. This female decided that the water tray was a good place to stand and have a nap.
