San Diego Fire Museum.

This is one of the odd fire hydrants in Tampa that doesn't have the yellow/mint green paint scheme that the majority of fire hydrants in Tampa, FL have. I have yet to learn who decides what ccolor which hydrants are painted.

Ulrich Wolf: Hier eins meiner Fotos aus der "Hydranten"-Sammlung. Vielleicht könnte das zu einer neuen Serie inspirieren. Wie sehen eure Hydranten aus? Sind alle rot?

Watercolor painting of a shiny nickeled fire hydrant with me lying down in front and a friend leaning against it on the right (you can see her boot and jean cuffs at the bottom).

It looks abstract, but it is actually a quite realistic impression of the scene. If you go to Mississippi State University you can see this hydrant outside the back of the Library.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure what this thing is.

An artist works on her winning hydrant design. Theme? Water.

Local artists were asked to brighten up Harrisburg's historic Shipoke district by painting decorative designs on the riverfront neighborhood 's fire hydrants. Winning designs were selected by a panel of judges chosen by the Shipoke Neighborhood Association and Art Association of Harrisburg. www.artassocofhbg.com/

Deadline for design submissions were Monday, June 30. Possible designs might include children, dogs, flowers, rivers, and patriotic themes. Forbidden are themes related to sex, politics, death and religion.

Selected artists will paint the hydrants at their own expense, using materials specified by the Harrisburg Fire Department. Local residents and area businesses may sponsor individual artists by making a cash or in-kind donation of $250 or more.

Once the hydrant paintings are completed (deadline is Aug. 20), a "people's choice" contest will be held during the annual Kipona Fest to determine the winners of cash prizes: $400 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third. Other artists will receive commemorative gifts.

Awards will be announced during a public reception on Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Conoy Street Playground.

This hydrant dates back to when the adjacent Sutro Estate was occupied. In the meantime, it has seen a lot of paint!

So I've been doing this thing lately with pennies...I've been leaving them in random places..like on the shelves of groceries stores, the tops of fire hydrants, on the sidewalk. The thought is that when someone finds a penny it will give them a tiny little moment of "cool I found a penny!" My sweetie thinks that I'm overestimating the thrill of a penny. He says most people won't even pick up a penny nowaways. he says it's like leaving trash.....it's that worthless...What do you think?
