Just like they do in the real New York City, this hydrant found in Disney's Hollywood Studio's Streets of America was opened up to spray water to cool off young guests like this little guy.

I just returned from a quick Labor Day weekend trip to Walt Disney World. Will be posting more from WDW over the next few days. This was taken with the new Nikon 28-200VR FX lens. This lens is awesome on the Nikon D700!

Out of the Archives: A welder making repairs to a damaged hydrant. According to an annual report from 1928, hydrants broken by automobiles were a major concern because there was no effective way to prevent them. In that year alone there were 669 hydrants broken by automobiles. The average cost of repairing one was about $60.00, which today is equivalent to about $450.00. (Image ID: RS7541_155_2)

So this is my local fire hydrant at night.

Most German hydrants look rather unspectacular - but listen to the spectacular name of "Unterflurhydrant" (meaning basically below surface hydrant)
