We can not grow these stunning flowers in New Mexico. Imagine how thrilled I was to see them everywhere in Washington DC. Not just a bush mind you, but a hedge!
The hydrangeas are still looking beautiful. The blooms on this bush start out pink and then a portion of it turns blue.
I really llke the bloom in the background - it is drying on the bush and turning pale pink and yellow.

Hydrangea "Hamburg", a big mophead that I prune pretty hard in late winter. Always a performer in late summer.
Linda, my wife, tells me this is a hydrangea, "Annabelle Lee", which is doing fine this year because of the cool spring.
At least that is the name I remember, from our annual Progress through the yard, re-introducing me to plants. SWMBO is the gardener, I dig as directed.
Hydrangea quercifolia (oakleaf hydrangea), a beautiful specimen from one of the Cambridge gardens I visited on Saturday.
One of the largest I've ever seen--the flower heads, that is. I cannot give here a sense of scale. About the size of a dinner plate (and those have been growing larger over recent decades)!
