Hydrangea, commonly named the hortensia, is a genus of more than 70 species of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Korea, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1–3 m (3 ft 3 in – 9 ft 10 in) tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m (100 ft) by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.

The flowers of many hydrangea act as natural pH indicators, sporting blue flowers when the soil is acidic and pink ones when the soil is alkaline.

The hydrangeas before the deer showed up and devoured them. Oh, well.

The sandbag dike had not only been protecting the house from the flood waters, but also the gardens from the deer. Not anymore. Now that most of the sandbags have been removed, the deer have returned to their all-you-can-eat buffet. Time for other protection measures.

Hydrangea flowers, when cut, dehydrate easily and wilt very fast due to the large surface area of the petals.

It can be difficult to find #blueflowers for your garden rainbow 🌈. With the right soil, #hydrangeas could give you that perfect cool blue hue. When grown in acidic soils hydrangeas produce blue flowers, excepting those cultivars that have been bred to be a specific color.

Aluminum sulfate can be added to your #Floridagarden to lower soil pH, although it may take a few #blooming cycles for the color to shift from pink to blue. Remember, a soil test is always an important step before you start working with soil amendments.

A gift from Kate's mom and step-dad last year at our house warming party. Once we moved it into this larger pot it's doing much better.

Etymology

The generic name Broussaisia was named in behalf of François-Joseph-Victor Broussais (1772-1838), a celebrated French physician and psycologist.

The specific epithet arguta means "sharp or sharp-tooted," likely referring to the sharp edges of the kanawao leaves.
