Hydrangea, common names hydrangea or hortensia is a genus of 70–75 species of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. It belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. ‘Hydrangea’ is derived from Greek and means ‘water vessel’, which is in reference to the shape of its seed capsules. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably Korea, China, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1 to 3 meters tall, but some are small trees, and others reaching up to 30 m by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous. Flowers are produced from early spring to late autumn; they grow in flowerheads most often at the ends of the stems. 12896
The Hydrangeas did very well this year, although in general the heads are smaller probably due to the hot summer.
Now some have been dried and form a lovely dash of colour in the room.

Flower lovers will know that there is a flower language.
Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by delicate blooms.
Of course, even the experts disagree on the "true meaning" of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people.
So, while all flowers convey thoughtfulness and love, a gift of flowers for a special someone will always create its own personal meaning, too.

These hydrangea blossoms were shot with macro tubes. The individual flowers are only 1/4 inch round.

These are staminate (male) flowers. Flower color can be greenish blue, lavender, pink, greenish white yellow or cream.

Etymology
The generic name Broussaisia was named in behalf of François-Joseph-Victor Broussais (1772-1838), a celebrated French physician and psycologist.
The specific epithet arguta means "sharp or sharp-tooted," likely referring to the sharp edges of the kanawao leaves.
Hydrangeas are popular garden shrubs with delicate heads of flowers in shades of pink, white or blue and pretty autumn colour and leaf shape. The mop head and lace-cap hydrangeas are most well-known for their ability to change colour in different soils.
This one seen in my outdoor studio represents all stages of life, some of the petals are brown and curly others in full flower but pushing through are the buds to take the place of the flowers.

RHS Bridgewater covers over 150 acres, and was previously the site of Worsley New Hall, once home to Francis Egerton, Duke of Bridgewater. The estate is now owned entirely by the royal horticultural society, and is open to visitors.
The hydrangea bush outside our beach house had every color of flower on it - I liked this pink-purple blend
So much rain in one night... all flower heads were filled with water... for some it was too heavy to carry and so they bowed down to the ground. ;-(( The stronger ones like this one are still standing up! ;-))
The flowers in the Pacific Northwest were fabulous. These gorgeous pink and fuschia colored hydrangeas were somewhere in the #Sequim area, but we saw them all over the Pacific Northwest.

I have missed you all very much...for the last couple of wks I have been ill, with this dreadful virus that's been affecting so many....I hadn't been ill for almost four years but I sure made up for it, with this one lol.
Today is my first day out of bed in almost 2 wks and although I still feel quite weak, it's great to be up.
I will try to get around to visit you all and see what you've been up to!

By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Korea, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1-3 m tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.
Hydrangeas are popular ornamental plants, grown for their large flowerheads, with Hydrangea macrophylla being by far the most widely grown with over 600 named cultivars, many selected to have only large sterile flowers in the flowerheads. Some are best pruned on an annual basis when the new leaf buds begin to appear. If not pruned regularly, the bush will become very 'leggy', growing upwards until the weight of the stems is greater than their strength, at which point the stems will sag down to the ground and possibly break. Other species only flower on 'old wood'. Thus new wood resulting from pruning will not produce flowers until the following season.
