‘HYDRANGEA’ - ‘RENISHAW HALL’ - Taken 22nd October 2022

Late afternoon, December. Super Takumar 55/1.8.

I cut this off a hydrangea bush that was growing in the garden last summer and quite liked the blue of the seed pods and the flowers still on the branch. The flowers were pure white.

Accidental shots worked out just fine for me.

Kindly click on image for more detail.

The Hydrangeas did very well this year, although in general the heads are smaller probably due to the hot summer.

Now some have been dried and form a lovely dash of colour in the room.

Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

Flower lovers will know that there is a flower language.

Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by delicate blooms.

Of course, even the experts disagree on the "true meaning" of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people.

So, while all flowers convey thoughtfulness and love, a gift of flowers for a special someone will always create its own personal meaning, too.

Over on Facebook I have been challenged to post one nature picture per day for seven days. This is the first.

Koria Hydrangea macrophylla is native to Japan. The ‘big leaf’ hydrangeas come in mop-head or lace-cap varieties. The lace-caps have large, sterile outer florets, with smaller insignificant fertile flowers in the middle. Normally, the outer sterile florets consist of four plain petals “Koria” is a lace-cap but has unusual crimped outer petals which produce a starry effect on the bush. It looked delightful growing on the trellis in the garden.

Hydrangea quercifolia is the only hydrangea native to the Americas. The leaves are oak-like --hence the name -- and turn beautiful colors of red, rust and burgundy in autumn. It flowers in summer, and the blossoms fade from white to pale pink.

Happy Thursday. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.
