The AV gear rack is embedded in the wall and covered by the sliding door.

The enclosure has Comcast cable box on the top shelf.

Below it is the main component - vista media center PC based on Gateway FMC901X.

Next shelf is occupied by the Onkyo receiver.

And last but not least, Sony 400 CD/DVD mega changer.

All these (and some other) components are controlled from Logitech Harmony 890 remote. The cooling in the rack is controlled by temperature-sensing module with 4 fans.

I built this.

This is my second mini-ITX build. This computer is adequate for:

- Home theater PC

- Office work

- Light gaming

- Downloading :)

With Windows 7 Ultimate installed, the power up time is ~30 seconds.

The Windows Experience Index is as follows (the scale goes from 1.0 to 7.9):

Processor: 6.9

Memory (RAM): 7.4

Graphics: 6.7

Gaming graphics: 6.7

Primary hard disk: 7.4

Base score: 6.7 (determined by lowest subscore)

The parts list:

Intel Core i3 2120T (2.6GHZ) (2nd gen Sandy Bridge)

ark.intel.com/products/53427/Intel-Core-i3-2120T-Processo...

I chose this CPU because I think it has the best balance of computing power (2 cores, 4 threads), consuming power (with a TDP of just 35W) and price.

CPU cooler SCYTHE Kozuti

www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/cpu-cooler/kozuti-cooler.html

The CPU's stock cooler didn't work properly, so I had to buy this one. It's more powerful, more quiet and more reliable than Intel's.

This is probably the best passively cooled graphics card money can buy.

OCZ SSD AGILITY 3 120GB SATA III

Great speed and plenty of space for OS, applications and games. And cheap, too.

SUPERCASE MINI-ITX MI-008 (250W)

www.supercase.gr/en/p/1-cases/2-super-case/32-itx-series/...

This was the smaller case I could find with enough space for CPU+cooler and a decent PSU. I could install one 5.4" drive, one 3.5" hard disc and two 2.5" hard discs if I wanted to :D I chose to install just the 2.5" HDs, the optical drive isn't necessary anymore (one can install everything from a single USB flash drive!), and since this isn't being used as a HTPC for now, a big capacity 3.5" HD wasn't needed either.

This is my Home Theater PC (aka HTPC). It consists of an Asus P5QC motherboard, an Intel E8400 processor, a Zalman 7700 copper heatsink/fan, 2 GB of Kingston Hyper-X DDR2 1066, a somewhat outdated nVidia 7900GS video card, an Audigy 2 sound card, an Antec 480Bluepower power supply, Sony DVDRW, and a 500 GB Samsung Spinpoint drive.

It also has a Happauge HVR-1600 TV card, a Windows Medai infared keyboard and remote control, and a Logitech web cam.

It's running Windows 7 and using Windows Media Center.

I should probably sweep before I take pictures...

Less than 4.5cm from the top of the CPU to the PSU!

Christina Applegate via ABC HD over-the-air.

Took me a hell of a lot longer to get to this screen on my Dell XPS laptop...

The glass rack is a bit small for either component, but it still looks nice with my glass desk/shelf. Both my computer and AV receiver makes it look more elegant than just stacked on each other like before I had it.

The philosophies I still stick to when designing a media centre are:

1. Organise the users content cleanly. (they spent time collecting it...help them show it off)

2. No matter the media type, the UI should work the same. (consistency).

3. No more than 3 clicks to play a file. (gets tricky for web content :p).

4. Intuitively hide the complexity and peripheral options

5. Minimal and clutter free.

6. Don't make text a button. (usability testing HTPC apps proved text buttons are bad).

This was achieved in Moovida, or at least the template and foundations for this were setup here...

Starting with the top left image. This user owns a lot of TV Seasons and each one is represented cleanly in a scrolling list.

Click a season and it should ask you if you want to carry on from where you left off, or start from episode 1 of that season. This means playback can happen as quickly as possible. Let's chart it: One click form the Main menu to select 'TV Library' and one more click to start playback. (2 clicks total).

Of course the reality is, it might be a few more clicks such as scrolling the list to find what you want, or selecting an individual episode to start from. Overall, it all feels fast. Particularly as the user only sees two pages/screens (Main Menu and TV Library list), and it never changes layout which also helps. Nothing worse than sliding panels and options to get lost in.

So we organised your stuff neatly and we see playback is extremely fast.

Of course, you may want to read the synopsis of the TV Show, or an episode. You might want to add something to a playlist. You might want to explore a TV Show and see cast pictures, videos on YouTube, soundtrack from Grooveshark and a myriad of other 'things' to explore.

The trick with Moovida was to prioritise all these needs. As you can see organisation and playback took top priority but, if the user wants to find out more, or invoke a myriad of other actions on a piece of media then it is available, but intuitively tucked out of the way. It also helps avoid clutter. This was achieved by what we called the 'contextual action buttons' that are pinned next to what you are currently stopped on/highlighted on.

You will notice in the image Top left, Prison Break is highlighted. To the right, there are three glyphs/icons. These are our contextual actions. The diagram above charts how they work. From the image top left, I chart the contextual actions available: submedia (episodes), show overview and more Options which all branch off from this selection.

They allow you to 'explore', view additional metadata/info or invoke some actions and exploration.

These contextual actions appeared almost everywhere. Looking at the image middle left: a TV Season consists of 'sub-media', or the individual episodes.

So, you can view a list of those episodes in a separate clean page that focuses the user on this and cleanly divides up content. (It keeps things clean and clutter free).

Click an episode and off you go. However, if you look closely, each episode itself has some contextual actions. Playback is the focus, but, the nitty gritty information is available ('i' icon/button)… and some options for the episode ('cog' icon/button) which allow for exploration and other complex options and interactions.

This diagram shows how, playback is the focus, but, the layout is kept clean and the information, exploration and myriad of options are neatly split up, made available but do not clutter the interface.

TIP: for other front-end designers? 3 lines... you gotta have at least 3 lines of text available for labelling. Trust me.

Most people make the mistake of putting their screens too high above eye level. When seated, your eyes are supposed to be looking straight ahead to the BOTTOM THIRD of the screen. To accomplish that, I built this low-profile shelving unit to house the electronics. Side view from right-to-left has one of the Sony 5.1 speakers, and a MultiTech USB voice/faxmodem. This gives amazing pop-up caller ID on the MCE screen. The caller ID is via a program called Tapirex which displays the name and photo of the caller, in addition to speaking their name through the livingroom speakers! I have the computer-synthesized voice programmed to say silly phrases such as "Heavens to mergatroid! John Smith is calling again. Please answer the phonecall from John Smith"

That's a short heatsink, BTW, practically designed for the Antec Fusion case. Building the new Home Theatre PC

Straight outta the box from Taiwan.

This came from Taiwan because the particular model (B204) is not currently available in the US. The US versions sport on-board video and DVI out vs this model which has an ATI video card and HDMI out.

The screws are the original shuttle faceplate screws, but powdercoated matte black.

The DVD Slot was laser cut.

There is no eject button, power button or lights.

DVD eject is done via a keyboard shortcut, and this PC runs 24/7 anytime power is applied, so no power button was needed.
